Hello All,
A relative of one of my neighbors passed away a few weeks or months ago, I'm not actually sure (but I don't think it was pandemic-related, fortunately) and she inherited his stamp collection accumulated over 30 years. She doesn't want any of it, and said I could keep whatever I want. It seems to be a mix of albums, stock books, and envelopes of loose stamps. Many are used, but there appear to be some mint ones as well.
I'm interested in a lot of the modern stuff and US stuff, but some of it is just not of interest to me, and it's also difficult to see what all is loose in the envelopes without taking the time to pick through them (which I'm not going to do today). So, I offered to look through it at a later time and keep whatever I do want and give away other things to other collectors. She gladly accepted, saying she wants it to go to people who can enjoy it. Anything I can't give away she'll probably end up putting on Craigslist.
So, my question is, what's the best way to post giveaways of things I don't want to keep? The albums aren't hard -- I can just post that there's an album available -- but the loose ones, I'm not sure. Should I just put up mixed lots with a general description of the kinds of things available? Should I post pictures of everything in an envelope and see who wants what? What would you do ?

It's hard to respond not knowing what's in the collection. There could be some gems, who knows? I have acquired large lots like this in the past and, generally, I take everything that's offered, sort through the material and organize them by country. And then, if there are a lot of duplicates and it's a country I really have absolutely no interest in, I will use them to give away in 50 stamp country lots on one of the forums like this one. It helps make new friends or get new collectors started. But I've been collecting long enough to know that even common stamps have a lot of varieties and, you never know, might be useful to a specialized collector. This forum has a thread for most countries which can be used to display what might be interesting material to some of the members.

nbstamper, Thanks for the info. I haven't seen anything that I know to be particularly valuable, but I'm very new to the hobby and it's perfectly possible there are gems I'm not aware of. There's a lot more stuff in albums/stock books compared to the loose stuff, I think, but nonetheless the loose stuff has to be gone through.

The folks here are very honest and helpful. The forum rules permit member sales, but I think you need to be a full member to access that part of the board ( tomiseksj is that correct?) BUT you are almost halfway to full member - keep posting! Flat out giveaways are always welcome. You post pics and folks enter and you draw a winner. FUN! Once you have access, you could post one or two lots for sale. If you list them as an auction you WILL get a fair price. If there are any goodies, the group will let you know by their bidding. If they have very little value, they will let you know, too. Pictures are a must. Starting bid should be low. Don’t forget to calculate shipping costs and post that. FYI It is considered polite to use stamps on the mailing cover not a meter.

...So, my question is, what's the best way to post giveaways of things I don't want to keep? ... The Buy, Sell and Trade (+ Giveaway) portion of the Forum is accessible to those who have achieved full membership status. Once you have met that milestone, sponsoring giveaways or sales is as easy as creating a thread and stating the parameters.

I don't want to sell it, as I don't feel it's right to sell what wasn't rightfully mine to begin with. (I'd only sell it if my neighbor agreed to take the proceeds, or if she's okay with me donating it to charity or something.) How many posts would I need again?

Too early for selling etc.... ckildegaard ....take the collection and give them a nice bottle of Wine Now you have years before you can really assess this - so no sudden move......I have had my late dad's collection since the mid 1990s and still working on it - so follow the wise people on this Forum and KEEP !!!! and take your time and get yourself some decent Catalogs.....do not do that on Google, please and do not open Ebay of Hipstamp or others......a fool is a fool so do not be one of those.... ASK !! Have fun for awhile and listen to "bright" ideas...... René

It's true, take your time. I've only recently started disposing of some minor parts of my Grandpa's collection after going through it for 2+ years. One of the very nice things about our hobby is that stamps age gracefully - unlike just about everything else in life!

I appreciate the advice, and I already know I'm keeping some things. There are also others, though, that don't have appeal to me at all. I'm not going to rush through the process, but I also don't want lots and lots of older stamps that I don't like

Putting up pictures of the surplus would seem to be the first and most important step.
The lack of knowledge is what can make the second step, disposal an unpleasant experience. Members here have a breadth of knowledge which covers most of the stamp world and will happily get enthusiastic about what others show off. We would be delighted to help you look for something special. So start with lots of pictures.

...How many posts would I need again? The requirement to post in the BST area of the forum, whether to buy, sell, trade or giveaway, is having achieved full membership status -- i.e., having been a member for 14 or more days and having made at least 50 posts.

Posting some pictures would boost your post numbers while you wait for the 14/50 to work through . I think you are allowed to ask advice.
Meantime You can still get some advice which you could save for trading or selling later.
Eg a picture of a page of early USA might get a comment not an offer. Like “ that ought to fetch $ x “ or a mixed bag of Germany or GB might produce a comment like “ nothing very exciting here , only a few bucks”. “ but I see a couple of better stamps in this lot which might be worth an auction “
It might give you an idea what you have
