I'm currently using Michel- Europa Band 1 2013 catalogue for Austria- just before 1918 Michel # 225, there is a taement about Watermarks
Wenn die Angabe eines Wasserzeichens ryvz.) fehlt, ist die Marke immer ohne Wz.
Which I get as a translation If the watermark ryvz.) Is missing, the mark is always without watermark. Which I take to mean if (or when) no trace of a watermark is detected, there isn't one (?)
ryvz (with or without period Only appears in this passage m(page 118)
does anyone know what that is in reference to?
Thanks

Odd. My Michel 2013 Volume 1, the note is on page 117 and says: It is a general note that appears at least once in all their catalogs, if I am not mistaken.
Also, if I am not mistaken, it means that if Michel does not specifically state the watermark in the header, then the stamps in that set are always unwatermarked. If I have misunderstood this, someone please correct me. In other words, if the set is watermarked, Michel will specifically state the watermark number in the set header.
For us Scott catalog users, this has often been a pet peeve. Scott editorial policy is that the watermark header applies to all subsequent stamps/sets unless a different header appears. That means, to find out if a stamp is watermarked or not, and it doesn't say in the immediate header, then you have to look backwards until you find the nearest preceding watermark header to find out if it is watermarked or not!

Are you using a digitized file and the OCR software misread (Wz.) as ryvz.) ?

Why yes they are scanned pages! that should add to the fun
I should perhaps look for a printed version (Although I really only want Austria... at the moment)

This is correct.
Michel is a little inconsistent when it comes to sets without watermark. Sometimes there's nothing stated, sometimes it says "oWz", meaning "ohne Wasserzeichens", or without watermark. They tend to use "oWz" when its an unwatermarked set in the midst of watermarked sets, but leave it off completely when there are no watermarked sets nearby.
Occasionally (as with their Deutsches Reich issues), they include a note at a certain point that all subsequent issues are without watermark, and there are no further watermark notations in the headers. Ex., "Ab MiNr. 803 wurden alle Ausgaben auf Papier ohne Wasserzeichen gedruckt" (From MiNr. 803, all issues were printed on paper without watermarks).
It's not perfect, but it's definitely better than Scott's mess when it comes to watermarks.

There are a bunch of Michel Österrich-Spezial 2019's on the German eBay for as low as €30. If you don't need the latest version, there are also several older versions even cheaper.

If there is "oWz" in the header,it does indicate that stamps of the same design exist on watermarked paper also, what are listed at a different place.Like f.i.the last for sets of german service stamps or some of the german colonial issues.
