by 1983, the sheets were overprintrd with a text, in Catalan, celebrating the 75 years of trekking in Sabadell. After dictator Franco's death in late 1975, the public use of our language was no longer banned.

Just arrived today: 1974, 50 years of the "Cercle Filatèlic i Numismàtic de Barcelona" (Barcelona's Stamps and Coins Collectors' Club). The language is Spanish as there were dictatorship times. It used to be very important. Now, like most clubs, is quite decadent. I used to belong to it between 1986 and 2019.
On the cinderella, you can see the club's seal and a 1936 Barcelona City Council stamp, showing the Gothic (1399) façade of Barcelona's City House.

For July 19th, 1936 it was scheduled the opening of the Barcelona People's Olympiad. Due to the Spanish army upraising that lead to the 1936-39 war, it was cancelled. To raise money there printed some cinderellas, based on a poster by the German refugee Fritz Levy. We know 3 versions:

On late 2017 it was issued a folder with the title "Segells de la República Catalana" (Stamps of the Catalan Republic)
On this map, there can be seen the Catalan Republic (pale yellow) within the Catalan Speaking Lands map and the yellow ribbon, symbol of the fight for freedom.
Inside, there are 24 cinderellas printed in 2 sheets, showing the events that took place in Catalonia on the fall of 2017.
On the inner side of the folder, there's an explanation (in catalan) of the meaning of each cinderella

September 11th is Catalonia's National Day. On this, we remember the storming, in 1714, of Barcelona's walls by the Franco-Spanish army at the end of Spanish Succession War (1702/1715) and the end of Calatan secular freedom. We also celebrate and honore the continuous fight of our ancestors and ourselves for recovering them.
By 1986, some cards were issued by the association "Memorial 1714". One shows the paper by which Spanish PO refuses to issue a commemorative postmark for that day. A particular pm was used to cancel it.
The second, shows a map of Catalan Language Speaking Lands.
"We don't buy the right to live right that you neither buy or sell a nation that deserves its freedom if is not given it, it will take by itself"

Hi Michael, I'm glad that you liked it. This cinderella was issued for the 25 th Gràcia exhibition, held by the Gràcia branch of Cercle Filatèlic i Numismàtic de Barcelona (Barcelona's Philately & Numismatics Club). It lasted up to 1996. Very short of its 50 aniversary.

Yes. As most Catalan artists sided with the Catalan and Spanish Republic governments on the fight against the fascist upraising, our governement set an specific department called "Comissariat de Propaganda de la Generalitat de Catalunya" to coordinate them:
Placed under the leadership of a very able man, Jaume Miravitlles:
He led many artists, like Carles Fontseré (here on his late years):
To produce a lot of worthy posters:
From which, many cinderellas were printed.
The quality of the products of the Comissariat de Propaganda has lead for us to speak about "La Revolució del Bon Gust" (The Good Taste Revolution). I've some books on this subject.

Joan ( cursus), thank you so much for sharing the images of these stamps with us! I love the designs. I am a huge fan of Art Deco, and to my eye at least, these are in that style. I like them very, very much!

A 1888 work by Rafael Atché, C. Columbus monument is one of Barcelona's most importants landmarks, as it lies a the foot of the popular Rambles avenue.
Cinderellas issued for the 1953 Dying Congress:
And for a 1967 gathering of a stamps and cinderellas' collectors club, bearing the name of the discover. Around the monument you can see some people dancing Catalan national dance, "la Sardana".

1936-39 war. "Pro-ferits" (For the injured). Issued by the PSU: Partit Socialista Unificat (Unified Socialist Party), which was born in 1936 from the unification of some Catalan socialist and comunists parties. It bears a "cancellation" with the same text as of the cinderella. Having gum, it's very likely that it wa used t aknowledge the payement of a contribution.

1929 Barcelona International Exposition Exposició Internacional de Barcelona de 1929 (in Catalan)First of all, I need to give a huge shout-out of thanks to Joan ( cursus ) for his excellent and generous recent gift, which I am now able to honor by adding some posts in this thread for what he has sent me. Thank you so much, Joan, I love these stamps and the history behind them! Joan, I am relying on online sources for info on this event, and I know that it isn't always perfectly accurate, so if you see anything that needs to be revised, please just tell me, and I will fix it. From Wikipedia: Catalonia Poster Stamps issued to promote (and now commemorate) the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition The example on the left is my personal favorite, as I love the Art Deco printing style and the dramatic use of colors. Panoramic photo of the Avenue of the Americas from Plaça d'Espanya at the 1929 Barcelona Expo. Photo Credit: By Records of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce (151-FC-106-67) National Archives and Records Administration, Public Domain, File:BarcelonaExpositionPanorama.1929.ws.jpg - Wikimedia Commons I am very fortunate to be able to add that I have a personal connection to this place, too. Like many World's Fair sites, portions of the structures erected for the Fair have been left in place afterwards, and that is certainly true in this case. I have had the pleasure to visit some of those places, so I will add to this thread with additional posts in the future. Many thanks again to Joan for generously sharing with me some of the rich history of his homeland, Catalonia. It is my privilege to be able to share it with all of you!

Hi Chris! I'm glad that you liked those cinderellas. In fact, there are 11 issued and most are quite common. So, I'll do my best find them for you.
There are another 4 with the text "Exposición General Española Sevilla - Barcelona" of a lesser quality.
Most remaining buildings of 1929 exhibition are already museums or cultural venues. Or they'll become on near future as the exhibition grounds have been moved to an area closer to the airport. But, actually (specially for American standard!) not too far from the Montjuïc 1929 site.

In 1937, the Propaganda Dep. Of Catalonia's Gov. issued a set of 6 cinderellas with the title "La Dona a la reraguarda" (Women at the home-front), showing the role of women on winning the war.
Whenever I see these cinderellas, I can't help but remembering my grandma, who underwent all this and died in 1940, long before I was born.

Like in other industrial societies in Catalonia, there was concern for the health of poor children, often living in slums. For thsi reason, after the recovery of responsible governement in 1931, and between 1933 and 1937 there were issued "stamps" to raise money to help them. Artists did the work as a contribution to the cause. With the text "Segell Pro-infància", and a face value of 5 cents of pesseta they were sold in 20 units booklets with a selvage with health care afvises, like the one shown. "Respireu aire pur" (breath fresh air). Sometimes labeled (by salers) as "civil war stamps", they were, in fact, charity stamps.

On these days of the "3rd Covid19 wave" let's see some of Barcelona's hospitals shown on the 1997 eddition of the Barnafil stamp show, devoted to this subject to commemorate the 100 years since the birth of Catalan doctor Joseo Trueta i Raspall (Barcelona, 1897-1976). The first, Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, is now a cultural venue, while the other two are still working.

Built between 1329 and 1383 (a very short time) the church of Santa Maria del Mar (Our Lady of the Sea) is one of the best Catalan Gthic buildings and, without any doubt, Barcelona's finest temple.
Cinderella issued around 1929, showing the carrer de l'Argenteria (Silversmith's street) leading to the church with the façade on the background
Cinderella, issued on 1987, showing the inside of Santa Maria del Mar Church.

These 1920 sepias have style and elegance , you may not rate them highly but I do like them more than many others shown previously. I presume they would be a kind of souvenir for tourists to remind them of the features of the city ?

Cinderellas issued for the 1953 Dying Congress:
Forgive my dark humour Joan, cursus . But I misunderstood the reason for these , I read “Dying” and thought of funerals. I then read the Catalan TINTORERIA. And realised it was “dye colours” and manufacturers having a Congress . I had to laugh at my silly mistake!

Okay, these speak my language! As a fibre dyer and developing a textile collection myself I had no idea there was anything (stamp or cinderella) on dyeing! This is way cool!
