You know how people bring you their stamp collections to look at to find out if they are worth anything? Well this very cool baseball cover was in one collection I was shown along with a whole bunch of zep covers, autographs etc. i photocopied this way back in the 1980s and will never forget seeing that collection! Of note Hank Greenberg bottom left!

Holy Cow! That's awesome! I sat in those bleachers many times. I love my Mud Hens! That's the old ball park that's a few miles from my home. They play downtown now in a state of the art park, but that old place had charm...mainly because other teams hated playing there. LOL

Terri...am I seeing that all of the players who signed that cover played for the Tigers?
And the Toledo cover/card that vikingeck is sending me is signed by Muddy! (That's the Mud Hens mascot, for those of you who didn't know that.)

Ooooo daveg28 you know your baseball! Yes, those are the signatures of the 1939/1940 Detroit Tigers. I wonder where that cover is today?

I'm an hour down I-75 from Detroit, so yeah, people around here like the Tigers. I ended up a Reds fan, though.

I grew up in the 70's just north of Cincinnati, and we would go to the Reds games several times a tear. There are two Pete Rose Signed baseballs that sit on top of my dresser, that I had signed by Pete back in the 70's. There is also an autographed Pete Rose Bat sitting next to my couch, right here where I sit all the time. Living in Savannah, Ga, I do miss going to the baseball games. I found an old 1970's Pete Rose Louisville Slugger 29" bat at a yard sale a while back, I really wish i could get that bat signed by Pete Rose before he dies.

mikeclevenger: Pete is my guy, too. I don't have anything signed by him but I sure wish I did. Growing up, I always played infield and my dad coached all the teams I played on. Whenever I had the ball in my hand after a third out, I'd make a point of running by the pitcher's mound on my way to the bench so I could spike the ball on the mound, because I saw Pete do that. That used to drive my dad insane...he was a Tiger fan and didn't care for Pete much. LOL

Great thread! Baseball is my favorite sport, and celebrating baseball on stamps is just perfection. The Yogi Berra issue from last year knocked it out of the park, as far as I'm concerned - fantastic illustration, typography, everything. (It helps that I'm a Yankee fan.) Here's a little hand-illustrated FDC I made at the time. Nothing fancy, but it brings a smile to my face.

From Linn’s today: “The National Postal Museum in Washington, D.C., is planning to open its much-awaited baseball exhibit on April 9.”
The exhibit sounds great, and I hope to make it there sometime when travel is easier. If anyone visits this spring I’d love to hear what they think!

Ever since the beginning of this season got delayed by the owners' lockout, I've been eagerly anticipating baseball's return. My hometown Yankees played their first game of 2022 last Friday, April 8. That morning, I went up to the Bronx and dropped an event cover in the mail at Stadium Station, the post office around the corner from the ballpark. It arrived back with me today, and I noted the outcome of the game on the reverse of the cover. While the postmark just says the date and "New York, NY," with no indication that it came anywhere near the site of the game, I know its story and I'm happy!

It's almost time for the Major League Baseball All-Star Game! I have two event covers in my collection related to the midsummer classic. The first one was postmarked on the day of the 1981 All-Star Game in Cleveland, using Scott 1381, one of my favorite US issues (in case you haven't noticed my profile pic). It also has an 18-cent "For Amber Waves of Grain" stamp (Sc 1890) that carries the full first-class postage rate of the time, so the baseball stamp is just for show. The National League team, featuring greats like Pete Rose and Gary Carter, beat the American League 5-4 that year. The second one comes from the 1993 All-Star Game in Baltimore, with a pictorial postmark offered that year and an unusual cachet made from a Maryland Lottery ticket that shows Camden Yards, where the game was played. I believe the envelope is Scott U619. I'm not sure what "MD 41E" is, referenced in the cachet; maybe a collecting term related to the lottery card? The American League roster this year included Cal Ripken Jr, Ken Griffey Jr, and Wade Boggs, among others, and they beat the National League 9-3. Another favorite of mine is Scott 2046, the classic Babe Ruth 20-cent stamp issued on July 6, 1983, in Chicago for the 50th anniversary of the first ever All-Star Game. I have a few FDCs for this one, but here's one that is cacheted using a reproduction of the 1933 New York Times report on the game. I'm looking forward to this year's game on Tuesday, and I hope any other baseball fans on the forum enjoy these covers!

Nice covers, renden! Thanks for sharing that Canadian FDC, I don’t think I’d seen that one before (and I always like seeing a cover with a personal story!).

A Washington Stamp Exchange first-day cover commemorating the centennial of baseball. I have collected this cover not for its first day status, but rather as an example of the philatelic art of John Coulthard, my favorite cachet designer and philatelic artist. This is one of Coulthard's more popular cachets that sells at a premium. His signature mark, a C with a bar across the top, may be seen between the rays extending from the baseball, just to the right of the batter's left leg.

Here is one of the better Babe Ruth series of cachets, published under the name "Philgraf." I thought I would post images while at hand before listing online.

Here are two event covers I made for the National Baseball Hall of Fame inductions last month. The first one is for David Ortiz, the newly inducted Red Sox designated hitter, whose talent and joie de vivre I have to admire even though he played for my hometown team's biggest rivals. The other is for Yankees legend Yogi Berra, who was inducted 50 years ago in 1972. Both bear pictorial postmarks from Cooperstown on Scott 5608, the Berra stamp issued last year. I made the cachets using vintage baseball cards and some decorations of my own.

A nice recent find in the mail: A used imperforate single of the 2021 Yogi Berra stamp (Scott 5608a, shown here next to the regularly perforated 5608 at its left). At least I hope it's that instead of some kind of counterfeit!
