I'm having an argument with myself over this and I'm seeking some opinions. I'm creating an album of presidents and I'm trying to decide how to organize it. I'm very new at this and I know there's no right or wrong way to do it. I'm just looking for some additional opinions since I can't convince myself. Option 1: Organize by President, in order of their presidency. Washington, Adams, Jefferson and so on... I like this option because I'd be able to see all the Washington stamps together. It would be a nice way to view the different styles over the years. Option 2: Organize by Year the stamp was issued. I have most of the 1938 series of presidents, so those would all go together. I like this option because I like the way it looks to have stamps of similar designs together. It just has a nice clean and neat look. Let me know your thoughts and experience. I'd love to see some examples as well.

Interesting question, to which there is no easy answer. Option 2 would be the "normal" way to collect, Chronological pages sets, series ,issue . Standard conventional and has its merits . It is nice to see a page or two of similar designs laid out for display. However,
Option 1 is much more adventurous and individual . It strays from the traditional collection into the area of the Topical or Thematic collection where in addition to the stamps, you have the chance to use them to tell a story. Each president can be examined as an individual with a short biography of his life and times. You can then build up supplementary pages with stamps illustrating events that happened in his presidency, sometimes including covers of the period ( might be pricy for the early Presidents but more accessible with recent ones) I can see your page or two of Lincoln stamps followed by some pages on Civil War and Emancipation, or Roosevelt with the depression the New deal and WW2 , Eisenhower the war general and the Cold War with Russia ...............the opportunities for expansion are limitless, or limited only by your imagination. The choice is yours , but I know which way I would incline .

I agree with Alex ( vikingeck) - it is all a matter of personal taste and preference. I would also say that if you plan to collect the wider set of US stamps, then I would probably try to collect two lots - one for keeping in date order with all US stamps, and one where you go for the thematic/topical layout Alex mentioned above. Of course, that's just my preference, and in the end you should choose to do whatever pleases you most - there are no hard or fast rules in stamp collections!

If it were me (and of course it's not me), I would like things in presidential chronological order. However, I really like the Prexies. So I would have those at the top of the page as the first stamp on the President's header page, or in a fixed place in the header -- at least you can have up to the last Prexie (Coolidge). That way you can sort of "preserve" the design consistency of the Prexies by having them in an obvious consistent spot on your album page. JMO. Enjoy putting it together!

I'd follow a blended approach, having sections devoted to each President, in the order in which they served, but including, again in chronological order, sets such as the 1938 Prexies and the Ameripex '86 issue.

Hi bcuddy
I assume you are talking world-wide. I would organize the "album" as: Alphabetic Last Name, Year of Office and Country. That way you can always find a particular president.

I assume you are talking world-wide. Jerry, I should have specified. I'm talking US Presidents. Although at some point I might be interested in leaders of other countries, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. I have a feeling US Presidents will be a big enough project for a while.

Jerry's question could be taken two ways, methinks. Worldwide presidents (all the presidents of the world), or US presidents, worldwide (I say as I just sorted a bunch of FDR stamps into my Argentinian correos aero stockbook). i.e. more than one US president has appeared on the stamps of other nations.
Of course, US presidents on US stamps could keep you busy for quite some time!

gatodiablo ‘s suggestion is indeed an interesting idea for extension on the topical theme . How the rest of the world perceived some of the US Presidents. FDR was frequently honoured , JFK widely mourned , Washington appears widely in 1976 bicentennial tributes, many of the rest never make it outside US . I think Franklin is the only one to appear on a UK issue.......and he wasn’t a President

Ah, yes. I didn't consider US presidents on other country's stamps. Perhaps that would be an addendum on each president's section. I think I'll start with US Presidents on US stamps. The American Topical Association has a checklist of George Washington that contains 469 stamps. That could fill a binder by itself!

I cannot really think of any but chronological but other themes but by birth state, age at inauguration. etc could be others.

Apropos to this thread, I just received notice from the ATA that one of their upcoming presentations will be about collecting US presidents and election-related stamps, etc. There are, in fact, a number of interesting looking topics being presented by the ATA this fall. The online event is free, but I don't if for all or for ATA members. americantopical.org/event-3993877

I think I would go by presidential order, then year. Keeping it grouped by the president would allow for future expansion into a more thematical collection by including other countries.

I think I'd go with organizing by president. I like the sound of that collection. That would be a fun specialization. Seeing groups of stamps from different countries for individual presidents would be a cool album. However, obviously, there'll be some pages that have WAY more stamps than others. I can't imagine that there's too many Millard Fillmore stamps out there. lol

A user on a Facebook group I shared this to pointed out that I spelled Lyndon wrong. In the future, I think I'll have to post the images before I attach the stamps so everyone can tell me where I messed up!

I am forever adding little mistakes like that! Even after I proof-read the page, there always seems to be a couple that sneak through! I just fix with a pen, or if it is just too awful to look at, reprint the page. Hopefully without any further errors!

I started with the more recent presidents, because they were easy. Now I've gotten all the way to Washington, Jefferson, Jackson and Lincoln. These are tough because many of the early issues are ones that I know I'm never going to get. And if I do get them, am I going to keep them in this binder or is a fireproof lockbox? So the question is do I include spaces for all of the issues knowing that I'll never fill them or do I skip a few of the earliest ones and just start where I know I can collect? And then there are so many variations and reissues. I think Lincoln was 4 pages!
But I'm still enjoying it. Hopefully I'll post some more pictures soon.

What about including all of them in your binder and if you get the rarer items keep the original in the lockbox and put a scan of it in the binder.

I'm proceeding with that in mind. I can always re-print the pages later if I change my mind. It's just that it will affect the layout of some of the later pages and I don't want to waste the mounts.

I find it easier and more helpful to put them by the date of issue. Then I could know which one that I miss.
