I have never collected US stamps. One of the reasons was the overwhelming amount of stamps with wavy lines cancels. But then again, there are a lot of nice stamps pre 1960. So the challenge over time will be to get stamps with descent cancels. What I don't like is this: But this is ok And this is superb So the I just have to go trough some envelopes that has accumulated in the Stamp Cave over some time.

Aww, I used to know a few US collectors who specifically went after wavy-line cancels. It became quite a challenge when they phased in the spray cancels around the turn of the century -- but even then you could occasionally find a few wavy-line spray-on cancels!

khj : That’s stamp collecting for you. It takes all sorts of collectors and collecting tastes. Many of us prefer CDS. And the Swedes in particular want upright Socked-on-the-Nose cancels on their early issues, or is that just my experience of trading Swedish stamps?

I decided to start a USA collection just last year. It is coming along nicely, although most are mint. I like looking at the stamp, vice a smudgy cancel. Although great SON's are always welcome!

I have never collected US stamps. One of the reasons was the overwhelming amount of stamps with wavy lines cancels... The traditional placement of the stamp has resulted in the vast majority of U.S. stamps that received machine cancels since their advent in the late-1800s showing only the lines (wavy or straight) of the killer. The CDS will usually only appear on a stamp when multiple stamps have been used to pay the postage. Occasionally, the stamp will be placed farther to the left of the cover's rightmost edge, typically by a philatelist, in an effort to get the CDS to strike the stamp.

With the mounds and mounds of used US stamps that can be found, and not nearly enough collectors to absorb them, it's nice to see someone tackle it, with a twist. Certainly, finding nicely cancelled common US stamps, will be a challenge in itself. Add to it stamps that were used "in period", and not 50 years afterwards, and you should really have fun.
I've had US collections since I was young, but gave up on it several years ago, until recently I too decided to change up the way I collect them. I am now sorting through my own mounds and mounds of used US, and I have decided to have several alternate US collections. Aside from my main collection, which will contain the usual used, lightly cancelled and mint stamps, I have given myself the challenge of making a collections of (1) all used plate number singles, (2) socked on the nose cancels (like yours), (3) used booklet panes, with used booklet singles from each position (where possible) and (4) contemporaneously used commemoratives on commercial, non-philatelic covers. At least those are what I envision.

Then I have sorted through all the envelopes shown in the first post. The temporary result of 302 different stamps between 1862 and 1960. I have also set aside about 200-300 stamps issued after 1960 to be sold.
To be continued.

My main collection is USA MNH only because I do not like any cancels. I think they take away the beauty of the stamp. I can appreciate other collectors who like different cancels. We all collect differently. I love looking at any and all stamps though. Happy collecting to all.

As a fan of Americana and American History/culture it really it was a no brainer for me to seek out the good USA when I started collecting. I love the uniform sizes and there are some fantastic designs, especially of the older issues. But what I really look for is a clear postmark of a town/city name that I have had the pleasure of visiting on holiday.

I don't see many nice post marks myself, but that's why those that I do find are so special to me.
