My project since June - History of French Africa Colonies/Protectorates (ex: Morocco) and Territories - A huge amount of materiel with stamps (1-4) from each Region - I tried to get the earliest stamp so there are many Scott # 1s in the pages and am certain other Catalogues list them differently - Now everything is done in "french" - I have to take time (?) and modify text of each page which already has stamps to present a bilingual version - I have to find the "fortitude" to do it (or motivation) as this was done for my collection and not for "publishing" As you know, I am not an historian and do have to accept (though researched twice) dates of the Colonies. (quite complicated for FRANCE + its possessions in Africa during 1 period of time - ) I did submit the text to Anglobob and we added "Upper Senegal Niger" to the list. Now I show you 1 page only !!

I’ve been collecting French Moroccan mint stamps since 1954 when I lived there as a boy. I have all but 3-4 of the super expensive early issues and have quite a few duplicates. I don’t read French tho. Your project looks very interesting!

Sorry to quibble:
On the map, the colors for the colonial powers in Mauritania and the Spanish Sahara are switched. British Somaliland is fused with the Italian colony. Togo has its current borders rather than those of the slightly stouter German colony of the time.
As for Morocco, one of the stamps is actually of the French offices in independent Morocco before the establishment of the protectorate in 1912.
Oubangi-Chari might be a distinct entity from Oubangi-Chari-Tchad.
The catalogs distinguish between Upper Senegal and Niger vs Senegambia and Niger, but as far as I can see it was just a change of names. Same with Benin and Dahomey.

I like people/stampers who quibble or who give a criticism - appreciate that and am open to any. I will deal with some issues presented: 1) I should not have posted a MAP as African Colony Maps of french colonies/proctectorates vary with the history of each Country, therefore the year you Map the Continent - checked other maps but will not make another one at this time - could be a future project in Geography, not my forte. 2) I agree that Morocco (Maroc) stamps are not inclusive of the "protectorate" period of 1912-1956....most were issued before France was involved.....For me, they represent an evolution in stamp history as 3 stamps are dated 1891. Only Sc # 38 is dated 1914. 3) You are probably right on Oubangui-Chari but the history of this Territory was created in 1903 and a reorganisation occured in 1906 naming this Colony of Oubangui-Chari-Tchad. In 1910 French Equatorial Africa governed the 4 colonies of Middle Congo, Gabon and Oubangui-Chari-Tchad. The more I read on each separate Colony/Proctectorate the more difficulties I find in doing this project........which will probably result in another version of this History presented with stamps. Postal history interests me and does vary with the general history of these french colonies. Thanks !! René

René,
Thank you for sharing.
i got a great visual of stamps but the history lesson with them was even more exciting. This is an area of interest to me. I now know where to look if need to brush up on history.
merci bien
David

There are some useful maps from the period just before the Great War on this Wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonisation_of_AfricaThe 1913 map may be the most appropriate: after the establishment of the Protectorate of Morocco and before the breakup of the German colonies.

Many thanks for the reference of 1913, John (finally found your 1st name) and you seem to be doing good in `french` (français) René

Just to throw a monkey wrench into things, along comes Fezzan (Scott C3, C4): Fezzan was the Military Territory carved out of Italian Libya in January, 1943 (and administered until 1951) when Free French forces invaded out of Chad.
