Hello All, I'm new to this group, but probably familiar to a lot of members from Stamp Community Forums, various philatelic Facebook groups, and a stamp/cover dealer on eBay and Delcampe. I've been collecting for 42 year now. My interests are fairly broad - usually postal history and covers from all around the world of all types. I also like to attend the various stamp shows (buyer, never a seller) in New York and parts of New England. My other interests are gardening, trying to maintain an old house, just starting into astronomy, video gaming, and raising my twin daughters. Hope to read some interesting posts as I always wanting to learn more and will share my knowledge and examples when I can. Thanks! Will Battles

Good to see another gardener and astronomer here! How are you going about those hobbies? I've been approaching the skies in the same spirit as I collect stamps. On clear moonless nights I lug the telescope onto the lawn and collect Messier objects. When I run out, I guess I will move on to other fuzzy spots and to asteroids and the like.

Welcome WIll, from another Upstater! I'm right on the St. Lawrence River, looking out at Canada from my front window. Just a bit north of Watertown and a bit further north of Syracuse. Which part of Greater Upstate NY are you in?

On clear moonless nights I lug the telescope onto the lawn and collect Messier objects. When I run out, I guess I will move on to other fuzzy spots and to asteroids and the like. Last Christmas I received a 4SE Celestron telescope. It's been great to see the moon and some of the planets. Deep sky objects are still small so maybe one I'll upgrade to something larger, but for a beginner it's been good to me, but terrible to the wallet given all the different lens and other accessories. Still been cheaper than the philatelic hobby

The upstate New York and surrounding area (including western Vermont) are among my favorites!
If I felt that we could survive the winters, I'd definitely seriously explore relocating. But I'm not sure we could adapt at this point. (We're early 60's -- one lifetime Southern Californian and one who's lived here 40+ years.)

Which part of Greater Upstate NY are you in? I'm just across the border from Bennington, Vermont and east of Troy. Know it very well. I grew up in the North Greenbush - Averill Park area and spent a lot of time in the Bennington area. Used to volunteer as a blacksmith at Hancock Shaker Village (a little south in MA), too. Again, welcome!

At the risk of drifting battlestamps thread, the part of Upstate we are in is very, very nice, three seasons of the year. (Except for this year) September can be the most glorious month. After six years of heading south for the Winter (five in Costa Rica, one in Western Australia), we are looking at our first winter here in a while. However, CR has opened their borders to New Yorkers, so we'll see...
