Baron Munchausen was a character created by Rudolf Erich Raspe in his 1785 novel "Baron Munchausen's Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia". It was based on a real life Baron von Münchhausen who fought for the Russian Empire during the Russo-Turkish War of 1735–1739. He was famous for recounting tall tales of his war exploits including riding on a canon ball as depicted on this stamp.
