Let's compare lost mail stories. This year is the worst I've ever had in 40+ years of international stamp trading. I'm sure that Covid has had an impact and I sometimes wonder if the low opinion of America abroad is possibly increasing the theft of mail out of the USA. Or is this due to the deliberate disruptions to the United States Postal Service by the current administration? That's all pure conjecture, but something is causing an increase. So far NO lost mail incoming - all losses have been outgoing. One other difference to note - I moved from Michigan to Florida in 2009. In comparison, back in 1990 - 2010, I was trading much more extensively, and during that 20 year span, I only remember losing maybe FIVE envelopes. Yup - only FIVE in 20 years versus SEVEN in less than ONE year. That is a dramatic increase! FYI - I've filed lost mail reports, but that has yielded no further information. Here are the casualties I've suffered: SEVEN lost packets this year! One to UK One to Sweden Two to Croatia Two to Argentina One to Canada Sigh! By the way, if one of my packets goes missing, I always send a replacement. I don't want to disappoint a trading friend. BUT, I draw the line at two unless I know the other person VERY well.

On 21 May I mailed my cousin in Cape Town South Africa , a birthday card and a copy of my Father in laws book of his service in WWI . Her birthday was 5 June so I thought two weeks was plenty time.
Never arrived!
Well not until last Thursday 1st Oct , when she phoned me in delight , the package had arrived .... 19 weeks in the mail !

I haven't had any mail delay problems, although I've heard numerous stories about major delays this year both within the US and international mail. My only case this year is not really "mail", but package delivery. My daughter bought me a lawnmower (hey, it beats getting a necktie) and had it shipped about 200miles to my house in Texas. It didn't arrive after more than a week. Turns out it got delivered to a business in Michigan. They were wondering why someone had bought a lawnmower for their bastion of concrete. So which is preferred, finally getting something after 19 weeks, or knowing that it arrived in less than 1 week but to the wrong location 1500 miles away? To end the story, the vendor wrote off the loss and sent another lawnmower to me. Meanwhile, someone in Michigan is probably using a lawnmower as a blower for their concrete walkways and concrete open spaces... My record for longest package delivery? About 35 years ago, I mailed an audiocassette in an envelope to Asia via surface mail (i.e., ship). I figured 1-2 months. It ended up taking 9 months, but did arrive in good shape. But my story is nothing compared to those "received decades later" stories. I think the record in Guinness is something like 89 years?

I mostly mail out - in the late spring/summer, mail to the US (from Canada) was much slower than normal, and one US customer never received their stamps. The last month/6 weeks, it's improved greatly. Mail to Europe/ROTW was affected a little bit during the same time, but nowhere to the same extent, so I suspect USPS issues at the time were the main issue.

For me, this year, at least two packages that I know of from Canada never arrived, and one from the US took 5 months to arrive (broken). I haven't noticed problems with outgoing mail, though, and current delays for overseas mail seems to have gone back down to 1-2 weeks, i.e. near normal.

Living in Ecuador, I have had more than my fair share of items lost in the mail. Mail sent here without being registered very rarely arrives and even registered mail from Europe took 6 to 7 weeks to arrive before the Covid crisis. I am still missing 4 shipments which were mailed in March but have been informed they are at least here in Ecuador, so technically they are not lost yet !!!!
From May of this year, I have had all my purchases sent to my son in California and he will send them to me by DHL. However, I have had problems with registered mail being sent there as there are many delays. I was missing one letter sent by registered mail from France in June. Tracking it online only showed it arriving in USA, nothing more. It still hadn't arrived by the middle of September so I filed a claim with PayPal.
I was then informed by PayPal and the sender that the envelope had been delivered on July 13. USPS stated it had been left with an individual, but no name or signature, and there is no trace of the letter. PayPal informed me that the letter had been delivered and warned me that my PayPal account could be shut down for making a fraudulent claim.
All in all, a very, very frustrating year....

Only one letter lost (from me to renden)... fortunately I had dupes of the stamps I had sent the first time and was able to replace and resend. I have changed to a very boring format of a legal envelope, an impersonal printed address and metered postage. I think (at time) letters with lots of older stamps is somewhat of a give away as to the contents . Mail leaving the US seems to take much longer then mail coming into the US- last exchange- about a week from US to UK, but 2-1/2 weeks from US to UK Canada is the same situation, I receive much faster than my Canadian friends!

Agree, Stan and thanks or the "dups" - I have not lost anything during the Pandemic and in my "mailing" history, have been lucky - 1 loss in India only Thought I would add this comment to yours as I also go very impersonal and stopped "decorating" envelopes - "sticker" does the trick and the clerk is so happy not to have to choose the stamps I can put on an envelope - No personal stamps anymore also -René

A quick follow-up to my post from yesterday. I finally received the 4 missing letters from March. And today I received a refund from PayPal for a letter which went missing in the USA. The sender said it was delivered per info from USPS, but there was no signature.
I contacted PayPal, told them I had paid for registered delivery with a signature, and they made a decision in my favour. Things are looking up.........

Hi anglobobYears ago we sent 2 dolls to our nieces in Quito. I guess a postal employee liked one of them as only one made it through. In fact the package was delivered open, not even re-sealed. Not only that the male (mail) must have gone by burro up to Quito. Jerry B

Jerry BThings are no longer stolen from mail here as there is no mail service .There will be a new President soon and there is talk of re-opening the postal service, but I have my doubts. Right now,if I want to receive items ,I have them sent to USA and they are then forwarded to me by a private courier service.I have to pay 20.00USD a kilo, which apppears expensive but I usually wait until I have a sizeable package. It is still cheaper than previous cost of sending registered letters to Ecuador. Other than two packages from Italy which were opened and the contents taken,I have had no problems with losing items. Anglobob

Hi anglobobWe don't send anything to my sister-in-law in Quito, it's too iffy. Were you in Ecuador when the president ran off with the treasury (so we have been told)? That was something. We had to wire money to Quito so my sister-in-law could keep her business going. I hope the new president is a lot better. A couple of dealers in Quito used to send everything by couriers to Miami and have the material sent from there. Even Colombia, sending stuff may be iffy, but not as bad as Ecuador. South American postal services can be frustrating. Jerry B

How does it even work to not have a postal service at all? Had the volume of mail so decreased it was no longer viable to keep the service? Or did the quality of the service become so bad no one trusted the mail anymore? Is Ecuador then still issuing stamps and a member of the UPU? Must everyone then rely on private courier services? So many questions.

I am still waiting for a Hong Kong kiloware lot that I bought from a German seller on eBay on December 6. I know I can ask for a refund from the seller but I don't think it is the seller's fault. I still think it is sitting in some bin somewhere in a postal distribution center on the US east coast. It is over 2 months now and I check my mailbox everyday hoping it will pop up soon. Sigh.

I'm still waiting for a shipment from Florida (USA), sent on December 2020 with a nice Norway lot bought on last TSF auction. But spanish post, works worse that never! I'm also missing two or three shipments from e-bay or Stamporama purchases. The domestic mail, seems to works +/- ok, but the foreign one is a disaster. Anyway... They keep on raising trariffs and taxes...Now, they've the covid excuse...

It's been pretty good this year, although the Covid situation at the big Canada Post plant in the Toronto area in the last few weeks has caused some delays on outgoing international. Late fall had 2 items lost - one to Peru, another to Greece. Everything coming my way has arrived - although a few items took their sweet time about it...

Jerry B and hrdoktorxApologise for my delay in responding to your posts. According to the local stamp club,no new stamps were issued in 2020 and there are no issues planned for 2021. Like most government institutions here, there is a lot of bureaucracy,mis-management and corruption.A few years ago,Correos de Ecuador purchased new sorting machines for millions of dollars and they have been sitting in a warehouse without ever being used. The minister responsible was apparently fired for accepting illegal payments during the purchase of these machines. Prior to the covid pandemia, almost 1 million packages and letters were discovered in a warehouse in Quito. The post office is now open but only to deal with this huge backlog. There are numerous private companies here which will deliver packages but they are more expensive. A small package or letter from Quito to Guayaquil costs about 4.00USD.However,it is considerably quicker ,only one or two days compared to almost 2 weeks if the mail service was used. There is talk of a new postal service being introduced this year when a new President is elected. However, this is now in doubt as there are problems with the recent elections. The usual stories...missing votes and corruption !!

Hi anglobob
Thanks for answering. Referring to "...there is a lot of bureaucracy,mis-management and corruption..." is an understatement for Ecuador. Our nephew in Toronto sends mail to a friend in Miami and then by courier to Quito.
Let's hope the new President is better than the last few. My wife said that her sister said the he was an Ecuadorean Indian. Maybe that is causing problems.

A cover from a German auction house that was sent in October has finally arrived. The auction house sent a search party after I notified them of its disappearance. The tracking number according to Deutsche Post said that the Germans had handed it over to the Americans, while according to the USPS, they were awaiting the shipment from the Germans.
I will have to scan and post the cover: it was sent from Addis Abeba in November of 1899, arriving in Switzerland the following month, so its journey was much, much shorter.
