Founded in 1810, Samuel Jones would become famous for it's non-curling paper products and stamp paper. In 1912 it adopted the Camberwell Beauty butterfly emblem, a telltale motif for it's products. In 1924 they won a ten year contract to gum British stamps. They produced many poster stamps and became proficient in publicising their name on many of their stamps. Ultimately became part of Wiggins Teape. Mentioned several times on this forum, I thought I would create a new thread for Samuel Jones & Co. having come across an interesting little collector's notebook with various examples of their poster stamps. This first series consists of 15 poster stamps telling The Story of Gum Arabic (note the butterfly emblem on no.15): Scan_20201109 by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201109 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201109 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr There are 3 examples of the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. Ltd set in the last picture. This is part of a well known set, shown in the poster stamp thread. This would seem to confirm that they were printed on Samuel Jones stamp paper. Next, a set of 6 stamps for the Reconstruction Fund for St Georges's Cathedral, Southwark, London. So, also on Samuel Jones' paper. Followed by 3 poster, BDMAA, Swans Tours and a Poster Stamp Club from Perfect Poster Stamps also Samuel Jones? Scan_20201109 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr

Continuing, we have a part set of a History of Printing stamps. from the next lot of 3, the first and third are clearly Samuel Jones advertising their stationery products. A Rodney Sealing Machine was recently available on ebay for £50 with the butterfly motif on top. Passe Partout is used in picture framing (note the high numbers of the stamps in the lower margins, over 6,000. The middle poster stamp for the Empire Exhibition, Scotland 1938 may or may not be on Samuel Jones paper. Scan_20201109 (6) by Daniel, on Flickr A set of 12 stamps on flight, again, the Camberwell Beauty No.6 confirms this to be on Samuel Jones paper: Scan_20201109 (7) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201109 (8) by Daniel, on Flickr Next up, we have a Samuel Jones Poster Stamp Collectors Club stamp, a Festival of Britain poster stamp form a series and another Samuel Jones stationery stamp. The next lot are from Posterstamp Publicity Ltd, a set of 8 George VI Coronation poster stamps. Scan_20201109 (9) by Daniel, on Flickr Finally, a further mixed lot, some are obviously Samuel Jones but I'm not sure about the others. Note that the Non-Curling Gummed Paper stamp is from Samuel Jones in Newark, New Jersey. Clearly, a US subsidiary not noted elsewhere! Scan_20201109 (10) by Daniel, on Flickr

Wow, daniel , that's some notebook! Thanks for sharing. I admit to having little knowledge about stamp paper or gum arabic, so this is quite educational for me. Bottom line: these are some beautiful Cinderella stamps, and I am really enjoying this new thread! Moved edited quote back from thread about staining and foxing. Daniel ( daniel), I moved my comments about the lack of apparent reaction between your stamps and the ordinary notebook paper over to a more subject-appropriate thread. Sorry for the temporary digression. These are very interesting stamps, and I look forward to seeing more examples from Samuel Jones & Co.

From the stamps in the notebook, we can see an association with Perfect Poster Stamps (see the final Passe Partout stamp produced by them for Samuel Jones) and Posterstamp Publicity Ltd., London (the Coronation stamps). This latter association is confirmed with the series of 'Our Beautiful Empire' stamps with the Canada and South Africa sheets shown below, stating 'Produced for Samuel Jones & Co. Ltd. by Posterstamps Publicity Ltd,. London.' in the lower margin. Scan_20201110 by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201110 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

Is this to help identify the quality of the paper of the stamp? Thanks!

Hi ausbrasilien , I'm not sure at this point. It contains samples of coloured and also various types of white paper for their adhesive paper products so that might include poster stamps and possibly postage stamps. I did find this postage stamp sample book on another forum stampboards.com/viewtopic.php?t=39393 with comments from a certain vikingeck

Thank you! This is a rare opportunity to discuss about paper quality, something not very common ...

Wiggins Teape were Paper manufacturers here in Aberdeen , making high quality banknote and stamp papers . The post I made, referred to such sample books being shown by the company to prospective clients in the Printing business. (By the way I'd sooner forget that other forum, as I quit after being subjected to ethnic abuse and downright lies from the nasty Owner of the site.)

I have now received the sample book for Samuel Jones Non-Curling Gummed Paper. It dates from January 1970, by this time Samuel Jones was taken over by/merged with Wiggins Teape. {as an aside, both Wiggins Teape and Samuel Jones had premises in Australia at this time with Wiggins Teape producing the paper at Shoalhaven Mills, NSW and Samuel Jones providing the coating and gumming at their factory in Keon Park, Victoria (now operating as Keon Labels) for Australian postage stamps. Wiggins Teape stamps produced for Australasia from 1920s onwards are readily identifiable and collectible.} So, from the Samuel Jones sample book, let us start with the list of offices within the UK. These clearly include Wiggins Teape offices identifiable by the Gateway House addresses and Butterfly House for Samuel Jones. Scan_20201118 (5) by Daniel, on Flickr Then lists of paper and gum: Scan_20201118 by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201118 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr The paper samples for postage stamp paper (Pure Gum Arabic) followed by coloured paper (with Dextrine Gum) for labels Scan_20201118 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201118 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr Other papers are also included in the sample book.

Beautiful thing! Is there anything on watermarks?

Sadly, no. Wiggins Teape did produce watermarked paper for stationery as well as stamps but I don't think that is was something that Samuel Jones did. Their stamp interest was mainly Poster Stamps. When they worked with Wiggins Teape in Australia it was relatively late and it appears that they just did the coating and gumming on Wiggins Teape paper and, in any case, watermarks were used less and less by the latter part of the 20th century.

One of the best known Cinderella stamp sets associated with Samuel Jones is the set of 6 stamps produced for the International Air Post Exhibition (APEX) of 1934 featuring an aircraft flying over Tower Bridge in London. A balloon is shown on the left with a pigeon (denoting pigeon post) beneath. The exhibition ran from 7th to 12th May. On the right-hand margin it read 'Printed on paper supplied by Samuel Jones & Co, London' with their trademark butterfly, the Camberwell Beauty, shown beneath their name. The set was printed by French printers Institut de Gravure, Paris. Scan_20201217 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

Most famously of all, Samuel Jones produced the paper for the world's first freeform self-adhesive postage stamps for Sierra Leone in 1964 to celebrate the New York World's Fair. A part set is shown together with a first day cover, 10th February 1964. The reverse of the backing paper shows the Samuel Jones & Co. Ltd. logo with the Camberwell Beauty butterfly, a truly remarkable piece of self-publicity. Not even the printers, Walsall Lithographic Company get a mention. SG 285-298. Here is a postcard from Samuel Jones from 1969 publicising the 5th anniversary of the above freeform stamps. Other postcards exist from them and also from Walsall Litho. By this time Samuel Jones was part of Wiggins Teape. Also 3 from a longer series of foil stamps for the 5th anniversary of Sierra Leone. Again, produced on Samuel Jones paper with the wording: Samuel Jones & Co Ltd - London Makers of Quality Adhesive Stamps interspersed with multiple butterflies and repeated across the entire reverse. Both card and stamps shown front and back. Scan_20201217 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20201217 (5) by Daniel, on Flickr

Two more postcards. The first from Samuel Jones for the first definitive self-adhesive postage stamp, Sierra Leone 17th December 1965. The second card is from the printers, Walsall Security Printers for the 5th anniversary of the first free-form self adhesive stamps, sierra Leone 1st March 1969. Another promotion from Samuel Jones. This time for 'Europe's first self adhesive postage stamps' for Gibraltar's stamp issue for the centenary of the UPU in 1974. Samuel Jones sent this letter with the folder and the Gibraltar stamp booklet to their customers. With Samuel Jones and Walsall Security Printers on the reverse of the miniature sheet. I had almost given up on finding anything new to add but suddenly found 3 items acquired at no little expense! Firstly, this insert from the 1930 Penrose Annual advertising their Gummed Chromos, in this case Christmas Seals. Printed on gummed paper.

So, following on from the brochure, here is the booklet entitled "The Poster Stamp To Day: Its Growth and Modern Application", a 24 page promotion for Poster Stamps and using actual tipped in examples from their archives. To quote from the back cover, "SAMUEL JONES' BUTTERFLY BRAND GUMMED PAPER is world famous. It is used for POSTAGE STAMPS, EXCISE STAMPS AND POSTER STAMPS in nearly every country." Where original stamps weren't available, black and white illustrations have been used. You will probably recognise many of the stamps shown. Here and over the next few posts I will show the booklet in its entirety. A spectacular item.

Embossed Foil Gold Coin Stamps There has been some discussion in salentin 's Bhutan thread as to whether or not the embossed foil gold coin stamps are self-adhesive. This is a common misconception for all of this type of stamp, probably based on the assumption that all of these gimmicky stamps were self-adhesive. I am quite sure that they are not and were prevented from being so due to the heavy embossing. But were they issued without gum? I am commenting in this thread so as not to disrupt salentin 's thread and because Samuel Jones were involved in producing such stamps for Sierra Leone, Tonga and other countries. In one of my posts above, I linked to another forum which showed a Wiggins-Teape sample book and such an embossed gold foil stamp from Qatar. The technical details for the stamp are shown as follows: 'Postage Stamp Paper Quality: Special Construction of Lacquered Aluminium 60 gauge Foil laminated to 120 gm2 GIP Base Paper. Coated with special recipe particle adhesive Flat-Sam' Now, does that last sentence refer to the underside of the stamp? I can't be 100% sure but I intend to find out. I have purchased some cheap Tonga versions and I will experiment with them and report back. I have certainly seen covers for this type of stamp and, surely, they can't have been glued on? Watch this thread 😁 Daniel
