Here is an early Jewish National Fund [KKL/JNF] item. One of my most treasured JNF items which I had to fight for with at least two other enthusiasts !! A Rochlin Cat#2A in a MNH Pane of 10 with amazing dagger-like serrated roulettes which I have never seen before on a non-postage stamp! And here's Rabbi Kook again ! [on a JNF label this time] A beautifully designed Diaspora JNF label showing the inside of the Synagogue in Toledo, Spain. Now a Museum and under ownership of the Catholic Church, this was reckoned to be the oldest Synagogue in Europe at the time. More soon..... Londonbus1

In November 1947. the General Assembly of the United Nations voted to partition Palestine. On May 14th 1948, David Ben Gurion declared an Independent State of Israel.
In 1949, to celebrate the 1st year of Independence, the Jewish National Fund issued Brown and Blue labels showing Ben Gurion announcing Independence.

A very exciting find at Stampex recently was this 1946 Jewish National Fund label celebrating 25 years of work in the Jezreel Valley in what was then Palestine. This Imperforate pair is missing the 5 millieme value and was handstamped in 1948 during the War of Independence for use in Haifa and Kiryat Motzkin. JNF labels were used in many areas as postage stamps with various handstamped 'overprints' when the British left the Post Offices and before the stamps of the new State of Israel were delivered. Many areas at this time were cut off and some printed their own Emergency stamps, like the one shown in the previous post.

It is very hard to add to the JNF collection these days as prices have shot up. I found this one recently which is commemorating the Emeq Hefer Council area........and that's the area I live in too !! So we are on the map although somewhat hidden by inscriptions !! Drats ! Issued in 1954 to commemorate 25 years of development in the Hefer Valley.

Note to all: I have just done some cleaning up of this topic because in all honesty most of it meant very little. Lots of broken links and confusing replies so I deleted many posts. 2 pages have become less than one !! That was the bad news. The good news is that while I was at the Tel Aviv Stamp fair today I purchased a rather unusual item that looked a little sad. Produced by the Jewish National Fund specifically with Schoolchildren in mind, this rather nice booklet is almost complete with 41 JNF labels (out of 44) and all in very good MNH condition. It made the price seem worth given the high prices for such items elsewhere. The Booklet had explanations in Hebrew and they inserted the English translations on white paper. The sad thing is that there is a fair bit of toning on the cover and some of the pages so I will be taking out the stamps for safer storage. But still nice to see such an unusual item. I wonder how many made it to schools and if many of them survived ? And if they actually put the stamps in like this one. It was bound by a nice blue silky string. I am guessing the booklet is from the 1960's. Here are just a few pages.

ADULAM. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adullam-France_ParkThe stamps shown below (not anywhere near complete) are issues by the JNF for their 'Teachers Council' for use by Children for School Projects. Each year different sets of labels were produced on the topic of the studied subject. They issued like this from the Jewish New Year 5714 (1953-54) to 5750 (1989-90). They are attractive issues, not easy to find and often difficult to recognize without prior knowledge or a handy catalogue ! Why ? Most JNF are inscribed thus but these Teacher Council issues are not as can be seen from the examples below which are simply inscribed 'Adulam' in Hebrew. Issue Year 5718 (1957-58) 5 colours of 4 designs (3 designs are shown) Se-Tenant sheets of 5x4, each vertical row(strip) showing the 4 designs. Perf 10½ Watermarked paper (Plum also on unwatermarked) Colours: Blue, Plum, Grey, Green, Pink They depict scenes from the setting up of a new village in the area of Adulam in South-central Israel. (Beautiful area) Trees Workers planting Tractor working Village I will add more as I find them.

One—two—three ... eight feet long, Two strides across, the rest is dark ... Life hangs over me like a question mark. One—two—three ... maybe another week, Or next month may still find me here, But death, I feel, is very near. I could have been twenty-three next July; I gambled on what mattered most, The dice were cast. I lost. Hannah Szenes, 1944 The Jewish National Fund label (below) was one of a set of 7 from the Freedom Fighters issue of 1946. It exists in 4 colours and with and without value. Depicted is Poetess Hannah Szenes, who joined the British Army in Palestine in WW2 at the age of 20. She parachuted behind enemy lines to help the partisans in Yugoslavia and Hungary. She was captured by the Nazis in 1944 but did not give any information despite torture in Prison. She was executed by firing squad. The poem (above) was her last, written while incarcerated in a Budepest jail. My Village is named in her honour.

Just in case anyone is interested - Keren Kayemet Stamps are not Cinderellas. Until the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 they were used to obtain donations from Jews around the world. Since the establishment of the State, they appeared for many years on school certificates in the country.

The proclamation of the State of Israel in 1948 opened up a huge number of offices for donations, volunteering and assistance in all number of works. The Jewish National Fund (JNF) or Keren Kayemet L'Israel (KKL), who had been in existence since 1901, were at the forefront of this. In 1948 they set up a voluntary fund to assist in the establishment of a 'modern' wireless service and they issued stamps under their banner as a means of raising funds. Shown below is a group of 'Radio Stamps' from 1948-52 and 1956. It is not a complete set. They were used to collect a voluntary tax on radio sets ! The Hebrew year is written in smaller letters in the white box near the bottom. They were printed in blocks of 4 with selvedge on one side which was then stapled. The designer was P.Putterman and they were printed at the Institute of Graphic Works and HaShaked in Tel Aviv. Perf 8½. It is stated in Rochlin that 'the perforation knives were locked in with the type so the Stamps were always perfectly centered'. The last Radio Stamps were issued in 1956.

1948 Abraham's Tamarisk issue.......Variety ! This issue commemorates the planting of Tamarisk Trees at a location near Beersheva in the Negev at the place where Abraham also planted them. (Genesis 21:33) The Green label (without value) at left was printed using 2 shades of green. The pair on the right are missing the darker shade and hence the upper inscriptions which are solid, although an outline can be seen. This was mistakenly listed as "Part of design missing" which could also be said to be correct ! Having spent a few years with little addition to the JNF/KKL collection (because of huge increases in price and value) I have at last found a few sources where items are more reasonably priced. In these days of closure, getting closer to those sources is proving difficult so patience is required.....I guess we are all in the same boat !

This one is for anyone celebrating the Jewish New Year which begins tonight. I have been busy in the Kitchen cooking the meal for all our family in quarantine.........a "Quarantine Supper" we have named it !! As the only non-Jew sitting around the table, I think I have done rather well !! Gefiltre Fish Roast Chicken Spinach and Cheese Bake Rice Minted Peas & Carrots Ratatouille Selection of Salads Apple, Raspberry and Blueberry Pie with honey Ice Cream I had to beg for food deliveries from those able, it wasn't easy. The label is one of a long series issued by the JNF specifically for the Jewish New Year. I have chosen this one as it's the year of my birth !! A happy event, no ? Adding to what I touched upon in my previous post about finding some cheaper JNF labels, I had an amazing experience last Friday evening ! A few days previously I had bid on 25 items that I found starting at 99c. I almost never see a Judaica/JNF label starting at 99c.......it almost never happens. Some of these lots were in sets or blocks and included some varieties which one rarely sees. I was the only bidder on them all and won the lot !!!!!!!!!!!!! 99CENTS each lot !!! But why ? Most times there are a number of bidders and I can say I do not recall ever winning a like item for the opening bid. Amazing. Maybe the seller lost out because all of Israel and the Jewish world were celebrating the New Year ? Maybe. Anyway they should arrive tomorrow. In the meantime here is a part set of JNF/KKL labels issued in 1949 to mark the election of Chaim Weizmann as the first President of the State of Israel. These also exist overprinted '25 Prutot' in black. Londonbus1

All my bargain buys mentioned in the previous post arrived just before Yom Kippur so I will be scanning later. In the meantime, here are a couple of nice 'errors' I prepared earlier !! A 1957 issue inscribed 'Flag of Jerusalem' which was presented to a school in the City for their contributions towards the Jewish National Fund. Issued in small sheetlets (4x4), Printed also in Brownish Red, Grey and Black. Perf 11. However, the perfs in this one appear to be all over the place....and not in their place !!!! The next one may well be a type of error or even a colour trial but my searching has drawn a blank so far. Issued by the JNF/KKL to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the State of Israel. Two valued stamps in this issue but no Imperfs noted. The middle example is in the correct colour but is missing the 20th Anniversary symbol. Issue 1968 in sheets of 4x5 with tabs below bottom row. Perf 10½. Londonbus1

In this wonderful hobby of ours, it is always a joy when hitherto unknown facts come ones way. I have been reading up a bit more on the life of Albert Einstein and learned that he was offered the position of 2nd President of the State of Israel in 1952, shortly after the death of Chaim Weizmann, who recommended him. Also about his time at Christ Church, Oxford and his friendship with Charlie Chaplin. Now I'll need to read more........... Einstein, supporter of the Zionist Movement only visited the region one time in his life, back in 1922 but was revered by many in the region and upon the proclamation of the State in 1948 was treated like a son. The JNF labels here were issued in 1955 to mark his death. Printed by United Artists on watermarked paper, Perf 11½.

In these days of no school and 'Zoom' learning, I will show you an item from 1953 commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Hebrew Teachers' Association and the 'Honor your Teacher Project' from that year. (My daughter, a teacher, would have liked that !). Shown is only one design from the set of three, the Woman teacher (how fitting). The Light Brown-type colour was the correct shade for this stamp and the Greyish shade was the colour for another design in the set. These may be colour trials although Imperfs do exist. Need to do more research on that. Designed by M & G Shamir. Printed in sheets of 5x6 in two panes of 5x3 separated by a plain gutter. Perf 11½. watermarked paper.

Except the 30 Prutot Vermillion and Dark Blue stamp, they are all on watermarked paper. Perf 11. Similar designs without values were issued by the JNF Settlements Committee.

However, the perfs in this one appear to be all over the place....and not in their place !!!!
I recently acquired another lot of JNF labels and the ones below were amongst them. They might be described as 'Printers Waste' and should have been destroyed but as is often the case with such 'errors', they escape even the most secure printing houses ! They are a bit of fun if nothing else. Below are three Imperfs with missing colours. The top two are missing both Black (windows, value and some text) and grey (part of flag), In addition, the example at right is in an unissued colour. Possibly a trial ? The blue example (bottom) is missing Black. The examples below have a lot going for them. There is an angled printing (incorrect paper feed), missing colours, double printing and what appears to be a fairly ordinary Imperf type !! Then there is the mess on the right which has everything !! The Blue examples here include a Missing Black, Mis-Placed Black and an ordinary Imperf. Quite a weird haul for one evening. More from the JNF tomorrow !! Londonbus1

ALIYAH STAMPS. Stamps issued for use on immigration certificates. Exactly how they were used is not yet clear to me ! More research needed. They have a value in the left circle and a Hebrew letter on the right circle. On these the number (value) is shown together with it's Hebrew letter on the opposite side. The central design shows a house flanked by two palm trees inside a Star of David. They were printed in small sheets of 4x4 by the Graphic Works in Tel Aviv. Perforation 11½. The design, which I find very appealing, is from a Passover Story/Prayer Book (Hagaddah) by Joseph Budko published in Vienna and Berlin in 1920-21. More from the JNF Album tomorrow.

THE SECOND ALIYAH ISSUE. The so-called second Aliyah (Jewish Emigration to Palestine) between 1904 and 1914 saw more than 30,000 mainly Eastern Europeans arrive and settle the land. Unlike those who went to the USA, where there were greater opportunities, the new immigrants mostly became farmers, some starting up their own Kibbutz or Moshav. Many later returned to their former homes or moved on as they could not see a future in the Holy Land. In 1954, the Jewish National Fund issued a stamp to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this 'Second Aliyah', depicting a farmer driving his tractor as the modern alternative to the Horse & plough of those early years. This JNF label is one which gives me both a smile and a longing (wish). I have been driving my old Tractor here for over 25 years and liken myself to the worker in the foreground. But if I could choose a period of time to come back and experience life as it was, I would choose the scene of the background, when the settlers came full of hope and starting something new..........we discuss it here often. The good old days are gone. The stamp was designed by Maxim Shamir and printed in sheets of 3x5. Perf 10½. I have been lucky of late to find some interesting varieties and this issue continued that vein. Top Left: Missing Red-Brown colour and Inscriptions Top right: Upward colour shifts (Light Brown, white?) Bottom Left: Extra row of perforations Bottom right: Offset of the darker colours (Tractor/driver) on gummed side. Londonbus1

MAP OF JEWISH NATIONAL FUND LAND. This 1935 issue shows the land holdings of the JNF. There exists a number of colours including the Black on light blue paper (left, below). I have shown this together with a black Proof on brownish-cream paper showing the value of 50 milliemes. The actual issue for that value was green. These stamps were used on Land Lease agreements much like a revenue stamp. They were printed in panes of 2 for booklets. Perf 10½. These follow a similar issue in 1928 when the values were different.

YODFAT. Ancient Yodfat was the scene of a great battle in 67CE when the Romans fought the Jews. After 47 days they took the City. Over 40,000 Jews were killed and the City destroyed. In 1960, a group of older students from a school in Haifa re-settled on the land close to Ancient Yodfat, many of them field workers for the Jewish National Fund. Today around 250 families live and work in the village. Close by is Yodfat National Park where the ruins of the Ancient City can be explored and where the Watchtower depicted on this 1961 stamp can be seen. Yodfat lies in the Lower Galilee district of Northern Israel. The stamp was issued on the first anniversary of the re-settlement of the land. Printed in sheets of 5x6. Perf 10½. A right merry bunch it is too ! Starting from the right we have the perf and Imperf examples. Then things get a little curious with the middle stamp a bit of a mess. The green hills on the left should be on the right and.......well, I'll leave you to figure it out !! Next is another colour shift and the stamp on the left looks like it has been twinned with another design !! All good fun, no ?

The following JNF stamps have been seen previously in multi-image posts. Here they are in more detail plus an unusual 'extra' ! Theodore Herzl was the founder of the World Zionist Organization and did much to promote Jewish immigration to Palestine. He was also a writer and journalist and politically active, especially in the years leading up to, and just after, the 1st Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland in 1897. It was at this first Congress that the idea of a National Fund (Keren HaKayemet/Jewish National Fund) was discussed. Herzl was born in Pest, Hungary (Austrian Empire) in 1860 and died in 1904. He was buried in Vienna but his remains were taken to Jerusalem and reinterned on Mount Herzl in 1949. The stamps below were to commemorate that event. The 100 Prutot value was added to the set in 1952. The stamps were printed in sheets of 5x5, Perf 11½. They were designed by W.W.Wind. The inscriptions reading from the right, anti-clockwise are ' Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl (his given name), foretller or visionary of the Jewish State, jerusalem 5709'. He is most often known as the Father of the State of Israel. Included in the lot below are some Proof copies of the frame only.

After a day at the Exhibition, back to the Jewish National Fund............. First of all a few more examples just in from the ADULAM series I posted a while back (see page 1). Still not complete but I'll get there one day ! The part sheet below is from the Teachers' Council issues, just like the ADULAM stamps. The issue is from 1982 and is entitled, 'EIGHTY YEARS OF JNF-ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SETTLEMENTS'. Only 10 stamps are shown (One day I might find a full sheet....but I doubt it !!). The idea was for the children to buy each stamp (donation) and paste onto a chart which were supplied with the stamp sheets. The sheet has a coupon at left for each one to fill in. The scenes depicted include people, places and events important to the history of the JNF. The full sheet has 25 stamps which are rouletted. The difference on this Teachers council issue is that the JNF initials appear on each stamp after a request by a committee of JNF stamp collectors !!! Who said Philatelists didn't have clout !!??

1948 OVERPRINTED JEWISH STATE ISSUE. This 1948 JNF 'Jewish State' issue shows the borders as recommended by the League of Nations partition plan of November 29th 1947. They are inscribed 'Jewish State' and printed by the HaOman Press of Jerusalem in sheets of 5x2 and 5x1. Perf 11½ The examples here are overprinted for use by the Interim Government (Minhelet Ha'am) 'Post' and value. When stocks of these were exhausted sheets of 5x4 were printed using the original JNF plates. Various shades of brown and Blue on different papers can be found. A fascinating issue when put together with the overprint types.

60th ANNIVERSARY OF THE JEWISH NATIONAL FUND (JNF). 1962 issue depicting Theodore Herzl addressing delegates at the 1901 Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland. It was at this Congress that the JNF was established. The sheets of 4x6 had both horizontal and vertical gutters. Perf 10½ I have placed the normal stamp at the top, a Blue and brown example. The others have a rather odd appearance which needs no explanation !!

What I collect: Cinderellas and some Ephemera from Great Britain, France and Israel plus a few beautiful bits from elsewhere !! Topical interests include Flags & Judaica, the latter with an emphasis on the Jewish National Fund.

If you have a thirst for learning, the next two Jewish National Fund issues shown here are just for you ! Issued back-to-back in 1945, when the JNF was under the leadership of Dr. Abraham Granott , they both depict great Middle Eastern places of learning, places that still hold their names today. The Technion in Haifa and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. The Technion Institute was built between 1912 and 1924, opening it's doors for study in 1925. It was long regarded as one of the top Universities in the Middle East, specializing in Science and engineering studies. The Technion today has faculties in other parts of Israel too. The labels were printed by the HaOman Press in Jerusalem and exist on both white and grey papers. Sheets of 8x4, perf 11½. Most types have 'surcharges' printed or stamped in various colours. Examples of the 100 and 200 Mils (Violet & Black) are shown. There are also a number of shades to look out for. (Sorry about that last image. My scanner has packed up and gone to meet it's maker. It means a few tough times coming up !) The Hebrew University on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem was built between 1918 and 1925 and is the second oldest University in Israel. Among it's first board of Governors was Albert Einstein. The stamps below were issued just after the Technion issue and commemorate the 20th Anniversary. Printed once again by the HaOman Press, Perf 10½ to 11. The stamps also exist with values and handstamped 'surcharges'. Londonbus1

'VICTORY FOREST'. 1967-68 (5728) The Jewish National Fund Teachers' Council Issue for this school year was slightly different due to the Six Day War which had just passed. A small folder containing spaces for 8 stamps was issued. (instead of the usual aforementioned wall chart) The sheet has selvedge to the left where it was stapled to the folder. The labels are Perf 10 ½. They depict historical scenes: Top right to left: Map of the Old City of Jerusalem Western (Wailing) Wall David's Tower Absalom's Pillar Bottom right to left: Rachel's Tomb Cave of Machpelah (Hevron) Tomb of Zechariya Abraham's Tamarisk
