JEWISH NATIONAL FUND- New York Branch Office. (regular issue) 'Zionist Personalities'. It should be said (at least by me anyway) that finding issues from the New York Branch Office is notoriously difficult. So I was pleased, at least, to find the sheet below. Issued in 1972 to mark the 25th Anniversary of the State, it depicts 25 Zionists whose work contributed to it's founding in 1948. A chart was made available from the office to affix these stamps to entitled 'Plant a tree in the Youth Woodland of the Freedom Forest for Soviet Jewry in Israel'. Each stamp shows an image of those named along with their birth and death dates. In a scarce case of design error the dates on three of the stamps are incorrect ! They were sold for 10c each. 237,000 sheets of 5x5 were printed in reddish violet and light blue. Another error, this time by the printer, saw a number of sheets produced in the wrong colours of dark and light blue !!

'And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shallnot wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper'Psalms 1:3
JEWISH NATIONAL FUND- France Branch Office. One of only three items to be issued out of the French Branch Office in Paris was this lovely sheet from 1978. The central stamp is rouletted and there are border inscriptions together with the Jewish National fund logo. Next to the quotation from Psalms is a drawing which tries to depict this. Below the scene is inscribed- 'KKL FNJ FRANCE'. (Fonds National Juif). The sheet commemorates the 30th Anniversary of the State of Israel.

1992, A sheet of 6 Jewish National Fund labels plus two tabs, marking the 500th Anniversary of the Expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 after the Alhambra Decree. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Jews_from_SpainThe design depicts Jews carrying a Torah and fleeing. Sheets were also printed in 6x8 and in 4x2 on cream paper. Reuben Nutless designed the stamp which was printed by the Mekor Press in Jerusalem. In 2014, a decree was passed in Spain allowing all descendants of those Sephardic Jews to become Spanish citizens no matter where they lived in the world.

Maccabiah to Massacre......... The Maccabiah Games, aka the Jewish Olympics, were first held in 1932. Athletes from all over the world take part. The only non-Jews allowed to take part are those who reside in Israel, including those from the Arab population. The third Maccabiah was held between September 27th and October 8th 1950. These were the first games in the new State of Israel. Most events were held at the Ramat Gan Stadium in Tel Aviv. The Jewish National Fund commemorated the event with the issue of labels depicting the Stadium together with relevant logos. The design is by W.W.Wind. Printed in sheets of 5x5, Perf 11, the labels exist both with and without values. Below is an example of the 50Pr Blue type (as above) together with a complete offset example (on the gummed side). On September 5th-6th 1972, 11 Israeli Athletes and one German Police Officer were killed after an attack by the Palestinian 'Black September' group at the Olympic Village in Munich. The summer Olympics continued after a short 1½ day suspension. Unused stocks of the 1950 Maccabiah issue were overprinted in both black and red on all types as a memorial issue to mark this sad occasion. Later, special Memorial issues were printed. '1972, In memory of Israeli Sportsmen massacred in Munich'.

Thanks for keep this thread going Londonbus, I am very much enjoying it, even though, for the most part I find the JNF-KKL stamps to be rather dour, but, nevertheless very interesting.
Enough so, that I was hoping to purchase the "Rochlin's Handbook of the Issues of the Jewish National Fund” from the Society of Israeli Philatelists, but I balked at the US$95 price tag especially when I was quoted an additional US$75 for shipping from the US to Canada, Regrettably, the cost of shipping makes all of the Society publications unaffordable to anywhere but the US. I emailed the Education Fund Director suggesting that they could perhaps investigate cheaper shipping options, but there was no response.

clivel.......Yes, like yourself I find the JNF stamps a trifle dull at times but I find myself attracted to them in other ways and they have been my main search item of late. They do not come cheap most times. Regarding the Rochlin Catalogue I had a bit of luck there when a fellow collector mentioned a family member was visiting Israel so I had it sent to him and she sent it to me here upon her arrival. I too baulked at the postage costs to Israel......but got lucky ! I am trying to post one item/set/sheet a day for as long as I can (until I get to the end of the album). I recently made a separate thread for these as some of the items are not from Israel and it can be a bit confusing. Glad you are enjoying the topic. Londonbus1

THE HULEH PROJECT. The Hula Valley in the North of Israel was once a swamp until in the early 1950's it was drained to make way for settlements and agriculture. Part of it was re-flooded and today the Hula National Park is one of the country's beauty spots. Millions of birds pass through here each year in their migrations to and from Africa and Asia. It is one of the world's most popular areas for bird watching. The JNF commemorated the changes in this area (The Huleh Project) in 1954 with a set of 3 stamps, 1x50 Prutot and 2x100 Prutot. They were printed by United Artists Ltd. in sheets of 5x10 (2x5x5 panes separated by a gutter) , Perf 11½. www.touristisrael.com/hula-valley/2540/

HISTADRUT COMMEMORATIVE. 1951 To commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Worker's Organization (Histadrut HaOvedim), a single design set was issued which had many varieties. I can show examples of the 30, 50 and 100 Prutot stamps, there is also a 10Pr value in vermillion or reddish-brown. All stamps exist on both white and off white (Greyish) papers; all stamps exist both with and without watermarks except the 10pr vermillion which has been found only without. There are a number of shade varieties too. Some of the above you will see in the images below, note both the paper and colour shades. These were all issued in sheets of 2x5 with serial number and asterisk by stamp No.9. They were also produced in sheets of 8x5 made up of 4 panes of 2x5 with separating gutters. It is quite possible therefore that the former were simply cut out from the latter. The Catalogue gives no indication of separate printings ! Perf 11.

VISITOR'S CONTRIBUTION STAMPS. These were given to visitors who made donations to the Jewish National Fund. Issued in 1955 and sold in Booklets with panes 2x5. Line-Rouletted and Printed by La-Or Press in Tel Aviv. The image below shows 3 of the rouletted types. There are also values of 10pr (Blue), 30pr (purple) and 50pr Blue. Imperforate examples can also be found. The perforated stamp (right) is from the second issue in the same year and is on watermarked paper. Perf 10½. In this issue there is also a 10pr Blue, perf 10. The latter stamp might be shown in the bottom image which is an 'Imperf Between' example. A light blue stamp with 'horizontal perfs only and no clouds' is listed but the image clearly is not a light blue type.......and it is very cloudy !! It is what it is. The stamps are inscribed in Hebrew at bottom 'guest donation'.

Baron Edmund James de Rothschild (Benjamin Levit Rothschild) was from the French branch of the Jewish Rothschild Family. During the 1880's he donated millions of pounds to consolidate struggling settlements and set up new ventures in Palestine. He became known as 'Father of the Yishuv', which broadly speaking refers to the Jewish Community in Pre- State Palestine. He is largely responsible for the growth in the wine trade which is thriving in Israel today. He died in France in 1934 and in 1954 his remains were reinterred at Ramat HaNadiv in Central Israel, a settlement and beautiful Garden area which he funded. (It was also one of the first sites I visited during my first visit here in 1986!) To commemorate the event (1954) the JNF issued a stamp in his honour. Printed in sheets of 10x4 (2 panes of 10x2 separated by a gutter) in dark blue. Perf 11½. Shown below are the stamp and two proof copies, a blue (shade) on cream paper and one in brown.

Petach Tikva is a sprawling City lying 10km east of Tel Aviv. It was the first village that was settled in the (then) Land of Israel in 1878 and by mostly religious Jews. The Village grew and with the help of Baron Rothschild (see previous post), became a City of great importance in the State of Israel. It is also known as EmHaMoshavim (Mother of Settlements). The JNF celebrated 70 years of Petach Tikva in 1948 with an issue of the two stamps you see below. They depict a view of the City with the Coat of Arms to the left. Perf 10½, they also exist Imperforate.

THE THIRTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF ISRAEL. 1961, The Bar Mitzvah year of the State of Israel. Commemorated by the JNF with these two simply-designed stamps The two Hebrew letters in the design denote the number 13. Printed in sheets of 5x6, Perf 10½. What you see here are Imperfs with colour shifts, Progressive Proof types and shade differences. Finding normal copies has thus far proved difficult !!

1955 TRACTOR STAMPS. The design for these is taken from an earlier (1939) Construction & Defense stamp by prolific Israel Designer Otto Wallish. The stamps shown here is an incomplete set that has lots of shade and Perforation varieties, not to mention watermarks and white & off-white papers !! Printed in sheets of 4x5, and the examples here are Perf 10¾.

Previously.......... ' Theodore Herzl was the founder of the World Zionist Organization and did much to promote Jewish immigration to Palestine. He was also a writer and journalist and politically active, especially in the years leading up to, and just after, the 1st Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland in 1897. It was at this first Congress that the idea of a National Fund (Keren HaKayemet/Jewish National Fund) was discussed. Herzl was born in Pest, Hungary (Austrian Empire) in 1860 and died in 1904. He was buried in Vienna but his remains were taken to Jerusalem and reinterned on Mount Herzl in 1949.'Theodore (Benjamin Ze'ev) Herzl has appeared on a number of JNF stamps and sheets and the examples shown here are all similar in design to each other. They show an iconic image of the man leaning on the railings of the Three Kings Hotel in Basle, Switzerland during the that aforementioned 1st Zionist Congress in 1897. The design is by Hans Dieters from a Photograph taken by artist E.M.Lilien. The Hotel, which is one of the oldest City Hotels in Europe, overlooks the River Rhine and still stands today. However, in the stamp design, Dieters replaced the Rhine with a vision of David's Tower in Jerusalem. The Three Kings Hotel, Basle, Switzerland. The first of these stamps were issued in 1909 to mark the 5th Anniversary of Herzl's death. Under his image is a Hebrew version of a quotation from Psalms (137:5) 'If I forget thee O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget it's cunning'. The stamps are the first issue from the JNF Head Office in Cologne, Germany and are printed by Deutsche Photogravur A.G., Siegburg (near Cologne). Printed in panes of 2x2, ten panes to a booklet which had text in Hebrew and in the language of it's intended destination. Perf 11½. There were 6 colours to the set plus a number of handstamps and overprint varieties. ½ violet (England); 1 Grey-Green (USA); 2 Light Green (Russia); 5 Indian Red (France); 5 Blue (France); 5 Brown (Germany). The next issue, taken from the 1909 design is from the Head Office in The Hague, Netherlands. 1918 'Herzl Issue'. Printed in dark Brown on light brown paper. There is no quotation and the JNF inscription is at the bottom. Booklet panes 2x2, 5 panes to a booklet. These are scarce !! The Herzl issue of 1938, from the Head Office in Jerusalem, is in 3 colours and with and without a number of handstamped values in different colours. They were printed by the Goldberg Press in Jerusalem. Panes 2x2, 6 panes to a booklet. Perf 11½. The 1941 issue has values printed on them. They can be found in booklet panes of 4x4, 4 panes to a booklet. The top and bottom two rows are Tete-Beche. One of the Tete-Beche pairs shown below is handstamped 'doar (post)' in a circle for use during the Interim Period during the 1948 War of Independence. It would have been for use in the North of the country for Haifa/Kiryat Motzkin. The 1960 issue from the New York Head Office is from the series of 'Purim' issues (1927-62). The top panel has changed to include 'Jewish National Fund' in English. The stamp comes from a special Souvenir sheet of 7x5 which includes the title 'JNF Purim Gift Stamps', text and JNF logo. Perf 12. I will add more from this series as and when I find them.......but it isn't that simple !! Londonbus1

After the Massacre.......... 9 days ago I posted the overprinted Maccabiah stamps as a memorial issue for the 11 athletes murdered at the 1972 Munich Olympics. I mentioned that 'special memorial issues were printed' and here they are. OLYMPIC SPORTSMEN MEMORIAL ISSUE (1) Issued in sheets of 20 (4x5), Perf 10½, the stamps show the names of the 11 Athletes. OLYMPIC SPORTSMEN MEMORIAL ISSUE (2) A sheet of 12 (4x3) with tabs under the bottom row. Each stamp shows a portrait and name of each sportsman. The top panel reads: 'A Memorial issue dedicated to the memory of the Eleven Sportsmen. Munich 5.9.1972.'. The 12th stamp (row 3, stamp 1) is of similar design to the first issue (above). Perf 10½.

PERSONALITIES & LANDSCAPES. This 1927 issue commemorates the 10th Anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. There are 12 designs across 2 Se-Tenant panes of 6 and each pane exists in 6 different colours making 12 panes in total. These are produced in 2 booklets of 6 panes each and 3 of each type in different colours. The panes shown here are from Booklet No.2. In booklet No.1 the designs and colours are changed. Each pane is separated by interleaving. They were printed in Germany and similar booklets, but with different pane arrangements, were produced by the Head Offices in Poland. Perf 11. Personalities. 1. Benjamin Ze'ev Herzl 2. (Rabbi) Shmuel Mohliver 3. A.D.Nordau4. 4. Zvi Hermann Schapira 5. Josef Trumpledor. 6. Ahad Ha'am Landscapes. 1. Technion Institute (Haifa) 2. David's Tower (Jerusalem) 3. Map of Eretz Israel 4. Ein Harod 5. Mikve-Israel 6. Hebrew University (Jerusalem). My apologies for the poor scans (lines) which were taken from the eBay listing. I did not want to explode the booklet because the cover is a bit fragile as it was when I tried to take a photo. I will, hopefully, place better images when possible. The panes (stamps) are in excellent condition for their age with perfect gum and no visible defects whatsoever. But they don't come cheap. Booklets from the Jewish National Fund do not exist at bargain prices in my experience !

I have already shown some of those types featuring Chaim Weizmann after his election to the first Presidency of the State of Israel in 1949. The set below was an earlier issue, from 1944, marking his 70th Birthday. For many years he was a leading Zionist especially during his time in Britain where he had a great influence in the drawing up of the Balfour Declaration. He was also President of the World Zionist Organization. The stamps were printed in sheets of 4 blocks of 8x2 separated by horizontal gutters. Booklets with panes of 2x2 also exist.

During the 1940's a number of lookout stations were erected by Jewish Groups to protect their populated areas. Three of these were in the Negev Desert and the one below, on a set issued in 1971, is Mitzpe Revivim. The Kibbutz was established in July 1943 mainly with financial help from the UK. It's original name was Tel HaTsofim which translates to 'Scout's Hill'. The stamps are in a set of 4 but only 3 are shown. (missing value 0.25). Printed in sheets of 20 (5x4) Perf 10½. Also exists Imperforate.

This 1958 issue celebrates the opening of Heichal Shelomo, the building of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the stamps are inscribed thus. Translated it means 'Palace of Solomon'. In 1992 the building became part of the Herzog College Campus and today is a Heritage Centre and Museum for Jewish Art. The Stamps were printed in sheets of 5x5 and stapled in batches of 50. Each sheet had a control number (see below). A number of shades exist as do Imperforate types. These here are Perf 10½.

1978 saw the issue of stamps and one-stamp souvenir sheets about Ecology. It was issued to emphasize the importance of forests in solving ecological problems in Urban areas. Designed by Ruth Levin Government Printer, Perf 14x13. The sheet stamp had tabs beneath the bottom row. The two sheet stamps had tabs in English & Hebrew and the shades of the stamps were noticeably different. The sheet with the Tab in English is shown below.

After a Christmas break, let's go back in time to 1911 and one of my favourite JNF issues. The design shows a typical Palestine landscape from an engraving by Herman Struck. The set was issued by the Head Office in Cologne, Germany but printed by Bruckman of Munich. The stamps were produced for booklets in panes of 3x2 and one pane of each colour to a booklet with interleaving. Perf 11½. They also exist Imperf and handstamped 'Dienstmarke' in Violet, but I have yet to see any examples of these. For some reason they do give me a festive feeling, like a winter scene without the snow. Or is it just me ? Most likely !

The sheet below was sold on the JNF stand at 'Jerusalem 73' Stamp Exhibition. It depicts JNF labels overprinted for use during the War of Independence in 1948 (Minhelet Ha'am period). The sheet was designed by 'Graphic Yoav' and printed by Nachtigal Printers of Tel Aviv. They were printed in sheets of 12 Souvenir sheets, one of which had a serial number as in the sheet shown here.

Prefessor Zvi Hermann Schapira is widely regarded as being one of the founding Fathers of the Jewish National Fund although he died 4 years before his dream was realized in 1901. Having put forward his idea to schlolars and committees since the mid-1880's, he once again put it on the agenda at the first Zionist Congress in Basle in 1897. He died in Cologne, Germany from Pneumonia in 1898. Born in Lithuania, he studied for the Rabbinate but spent much of his life learning and teaching Mathematics and Secular Sciences. The issue below, in 1953, marked the reinterment of his remains in the HaMenuchot Cemetery in Jeruslaem. Designed by Moshe Shamir and printed by United Artists of Tel Aviv in sheets of 5x6 (2 panes of 5x3 separated by a plain gutter). Perf 11½. You will notice the inscription at bottom right of the stamp is in Hebrew on the valued stamps and in English on the other non-values ! I will admit to not realizing that fact until earlier today !! All values exist Imperforate also. One example shown.

One of the stamps issued was entitled 'Vision and Reality' and below you can see a normal stamp together with an example which hit the perforator one too many times !!! The reproduction to the right of the design is from the 1909 issue (shown previously) showing Herzl's vision of a future Jewish State from his Basle Hotel balcony. The rest of the design is the reality of settlements, forestation and Industry. The design is by S.Vitkin and printed by Lewis-Epstein Ltd of Bat Yam (Tel Aviv). Perf 11½. The stamp exists also with a much darker shade of Grey.

Russian-born Josef Trumpeldor was a War Hero in both his nation of birth and for the allies during World War I where he helped found the Zion Mule Corps, the first Jewish Military Unit for over two thousand years !! He also helped Immigrants settle in Palestine after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and used his knowledge to help settlements and villages with defence. During one of those trips he was called to fight to help defend Tel Hai and was killed along with 7 Jews and 5 Arab fighters. A monument to 'the eight' stands today at Tel Hai. The Northern town of Kiryat Shemona (City of eight) is named after Trumpeldor and the fallen. He has become a National hero in the State of Israel. The set below was issued in 1945 to commemorate his 25th Death Anniversary. Printed in sheets of 8x8 by the HaOman Press of Jerusalem, Perf 11½. There exists also examples with handstamped 'Mils' overprints in Black and Violet and in various values. A further set was issued in 1950 for the 30th Death Anniversary. These were printed in sheets of 5x5, Perf 11. They depict Trumpeldor above a scene from the village of Tel Hai.
