That sounds like a good idea, Jean ( polarbear ). The author of a book in this area sounds like an excellent place to start. Do not have this book polarbear, maybe of importance for you - since I do not have that variety (not listed in Unitrade) it might be worthwhile to send an e-mail to the Editor of Unitrade and present the problem - Robin Harris happens to be the Editor LOL !!.....and his name corresponds to your cited author about it ?? Would like to see a scan of his opinion in his book as he has not adopted the changeling in Unitrade (?) René

Hi Polar Bear,
I would be interested in seeing the stamp under longwave light, and also the reverse of the stamp. It can be dodgy with used stamps. There is definitely a colour difference in the early days of this issue, when it was with Dextrine gum and typically a dull overall fluorescence. It seems there is more colour stability amongst those with PVC gum. I will say, I do have some shades, but nothing quite a brown, with a considerable absence of orange, as what you have here.

Hi Brad , uppercanadian . Unfortunately I do not currently own or have access to a longwave UV light. I do have a shortwave UV light. The bottom stamp is the browner one. The top is the orange one. Sorry for the bad photos. These automatically turned 90 degrees when I uploaded for some reason. These were taken one-handed with my cell phone. The other hand was holding the light.

renden , he doesn’t even mention it per se. Just a listing of the two colours beside the word “shades”. I would post a photo, but I’m sure it’s breaking copyright to do so on a public board. The book was written in 2000, and Mr. Harris openly admits there could be a lot of undiscovered varieties out there. So I’m still wondering.

I heard back from Mr. Harris. He needs better photos, which doesn’t surprise me. I’ll set up my camera today. He said the reference to the two shades probably came from “the Irwin and Freedman book”. Any idea what that title is?
He did say putting it in hydrogen peroxide basically turned it into a damaged stamp in his opinion. So I won’t be doing that again.

Can someone please give me the history of the colour difference between these two stamps? I can’t find anything in Unitrade. It’s Canada 465A.
The link to the Brixton Chrome website above should be able to answer most, if not all, of your questions...
Have fun and happy collecting!

Thank-you stanley64 ! That’s a great article! I second the motion by polarbear and this blog shows how little we know (at least me) on the Canada 50¢ stamp and how informed and meticulous is our host Brixton-C !!....a real journalist (of stamps) René
