Hi. I don’t know where to put this and have been searching for an answer for over half an hour. I am having challenges getting decent images up for other members of TSF to view. Consequently I haven’t been posting many.
currently I do not have access to a scanner. I use my iPad mini 5 to access the site. I’m just taking photos with my iPad and uploading them to the forum. Quality is definitely lacking.
Question: can I use a scan app and get quality images for uploading? If so, Which ones? Or am I going to have to buy a stand alone scanner, hook it up to my rarely used iMac, and sit in the cold dark basement to get good images up onto TSF?
what is everyone else doing? What the typical setup? What’s possible with what I’ve got? Scanners are a tad more expensive here than in the US.

If you really cared, you'd buy the scanner and sit in a darkened basement and feed us scans. Just sayin'
Beyond that, I got nothin'...I don't live in appleland.
Steve will be by shortly to help.

cjd. I’m going to have to get a decent computer chair too. It’s just a whole lot more comfortable using the iPad on the sofa. I have back issues and i’ve yet to find a comfortable office chair. But if I have to use the iMac I will. I do have a PC laptop, but it isn’t recognizing any of my Apple devices. We have an external hard drive. It’s not letting me access that. It keeps asking for a password when one was never set on it. I can, however, access the hard drive from my iMac without any problem. I thought I could take better photos with my new iPhone, save them to the external hard drive, then pull them up on my PC laptop, and use that to access the forum, and upload them. But with it not cooperating with the external hard drive that isn’t going to work. We may need a new external hard drive. Hubby says he’s been having issues with it too, and that it was never set up properly. Alternatively I could buy a scanner, and try to make room for it on my desk downstairs. I’m not very technically literate and I guess I’m just wondering what my options are and what might be the best way forward.

Sure, sure, whatever. Get a nice chair. But let's get to the eye candy...post 'em up. [tap, tap, tap] (I hope the sound of my fingers tapping on my desk aren't distracting...) (I like to talk smack, but I really have no idea what goes on under the hood of apple stuff.)
eta: I won't say that you can't get to a good result through a phone setup, because someone will surely come along and show what he or she can do with it*, but the scanner will almost certainly do a better job and with less effort. Also, you can get a wireless scanner that can sit wherever you want it to be. It can even live in a closet. You'll find lots of things to do with a scanner once you have one. It's so useful for a household that it shouldn't even count against your stamp budget.
*there was a member over on the Community forum who had beautiful photographs of stamps. Top quality. Pretty sure he was a pro, though, and the equipment outlay and learning curve would be huge.

I have an Epson V600 and I use VueScan and I'm on a Mac. I initially tried a Cannon LiDE 300- it was inexpensive ($60 as I remember)- the scanner software did not make me happy with the color rendition, which is what led me to the VueScan software based on recommendations from people here on the forum. It worked well except for some colors.... I tried different backgrounds, settings and finally purchased the Cannon- the software it comes with is OK, but I prefer VueScan for me and my aging eyes it has become an invaluable tool a comfy desk chair is a must! (I have no connection to any of the manufacturers of any of the above named products )

I have the Canon Lide 400. It's pretty good. I have been using Canon's software, but also have VueScan.

VueScan is the bee's knees! I have been using it for many years with great success and reliability. I believe there is a free version, but I sprung for the pro version many years ago - a one-time payment that has paid for itself many times over.
I just put my Canon LiDE 1100 in the closet, it was the second LiDE scanner in my arsenal (I wore out the first one!). The 1100 still works fine and many of my images here were done with it. It's only in the closet because I popped for a Plustek OpticPro A320L, because it is an affordable large format (11 x 17 inches), as I also scan a lot of ephemera and magazines that exceed the capacity of a letter/A4 size scanner. I've also got an Epson V700 Photo, which is probably similar to the V600 mentioned earlier. I only use it for scanning glass negatives for the most part.
In a loosely related theme, I recently replace my two Canon all-in-one inkjet printers with two Canon large-tank printers - that are printers only - no scan, no fax, no telephone, no telegraph key, no smoke signals, and best of all, no tiny ink cartridges!

Okay, this is just too funny/weird not to share. There is an Epson V600 in the house in Hubby’s office, but he will not let me use it. I have a purple thumb with electronics and computers. He says his Christmas gift to me will be to scan all my stamps next year! Okay, so I can see lots of issues with this. One is marital harmony! Another is He’s convinced stamp collecting, which I’ve done since I was about ten years old, is a passing interest, and we don’t need a second scanner in my office. Apparently he thinks I’ve joined these groups online to sell my stamp collection, which is partly true. I have one binder and a stock book of stamps to sell. I most certainly am not selling everything! Too strange! I’m obviously going to have to sit down and have a talk with him. I came away from the initial conversation in a bit of shock and disbelief. He thinks it’s okay to scan the pages and email them to me. I can then save them in photos and crop them as I wish for posting on the forum boards. I’m concerned the mail program will lower the quality of the images. Anyone with experience of this way of doing things?

The mail program should not by default modify the files if they are attachments. You should be sure the files are not too small or too large.

Thanks angore. I’ll let him know. Then, after Christmas, let the scanning begin!

I am in similar situation. Mostly about lack of budgeting on my part. and running out of space. I live in 1250 sq feet. I will get rid of furniture before stamps. david

and running out of space. I live in 1250 sq feet. I will get rid of furniture before stamps. david David, that, too, is part of the issue. We live in a 1500 square foot house, and that includes both floors (main and basement). There’s just not a lot of room! I think I’m doing well to keep my entire collection to 5 linear feet of shelf space. I also derive a lot of pleasure from my stamps, and expect that to continue as we continue to downsize as we grow older. I hear Hubby’s underlying concern about “Where’s the room?”, but other things will go first.
