Rather than create separate postings for each country that Jacques Combet did engraving work for, I wanted him to have his own post, as I noticed his work has really caught my eye. French collectors will probably be familiar with his 1958 Town Views or the later mid-60's Satellite issues, but what is drawing my eye is the later 70s work, from the CAR Arphila '75 issue: To the 1977 Benin Zeppelin issue: I've enjoyed the work of other engravers in this later period, but Combet to me has a certain abstractness that ticks quite a few boxes. More postings to come as more material comes in.

Chris,
I can see why his works have caught your eye. Looking forward to further examples.

Interestingly enough, the woman's silhouette ends up in the 1982 PhilexFrance issue in a remixed form (this time by Monvoisin):

More color proofs came in today. This one depicts the inaugural voyage of the barge "Baban Maza", the "Flotilla of Hope" on the Niger river, from Warri via Port Harcourt (Nigeria) to Gaya (Niger Republic) on January 1, 1973. That last sentence is courtesy of a link to an out of print logbook formerly available on Amazon.com: Log book M/T "Baban Maza" My sense with a bit more searching was that West Africa was in the middle of a major drought in 1973, so the "La Flotte De L'Espoir" was likely delivering food supplies.

I'm missing the PA89 from the set here, but I couldn't pass on these, the PA90 and 91 for Senegal, 1970, to commemorate the Osaka Expo '70: These are just beautiful, IMO, especially the work done on the head dress for PA 90. A quick check of Colnect and searching for PhilaTokyo finds additional work from J. Combet for the 1971 PhilaTokyo: Congo Brazzaville - PA 121/122 (engraving) Upper Volta - 248/249 (photogravure) My "micro topic" is coming along nicely :-)

Hi, I am also interested in J.Combet. I've been working on an albumeasy catalogue of his work. It's up to 105 pages so far. The trouble has been discovering that the online lists of his work are incomplete. The guy was very busy. I think this series for PhilaTokyo is the series he mentions in a quote about thinking of Tsuguharu Foujita, whose work he had engraved for a book, while designing these stamps. Greg

Greg Thanks for sharing that little factoid, very neat, and not unlike how Debussy was influenced by Japanese design. I think I've found 135 issues in French Africa alone, and that's without hunting seriously. He really was a prolific engraver / designer. And you're right, the online sites, while a nice introduction, don't have the full inventory by a long shot.

We should exchange data. I don't have a list per se, it's in albumeasy format. Just about every time I take a dive into colnect I find new issues.

The 1940 France commemoration of Claude Debussy. The artist chose "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun" for the accompanying image.
Thank you and Lickemandstickem for bringing attention to 'J. Combet". I wasn't aware of him by name but have seen his images on occasion and I liked them very much. Hits me as sort of "New Millenia Deco" (my invention). I want to learn more about him..

Greg Wow Greg, I took the tour of his Discogs (OMG) and then found him on a site I've never seen before called "Stamp Engravers" (that totally took my breath away, I cannot believe I didn't know about this site before). In any event, Jacques Combet is one of the most important graphic artists I'd never heard of until now. Huge thanks to you and Chris for highlighting this important artists' work.
Sincerely, Rob

I couldn't pass on this French Andorra set of Frescos from 1967: I take it this set was a success, as every year from 1968-72, a new frescoes set was released.

Collectors of the 1962 "EA" issues of Algeria will immediately recognize the un-surcharged version of Sn 295:
* egg on face * -- the "EA" is a surcharge on France 1013 (YT 1318) There are a few surcharged versions of Combet-designed stamps such as Benin C496 from 1995, but the "EA" issues are on a completely different scale as far as the varieties go. I have a couple of "EA" lots coming in and will post as available.

The Algerian "EA" overprints of France 1013 are quite the rabbit hole (the typeface changes by locale, or even varies in the same strip!): I think I'll stop here as this is quite the rabbit hole, with variation upon variation.
