Robert, Received, thank you very much, I had a quick look at the PDF's, very interesting with plenty of ideas for experimentation. I am especially looking forward to trying Gwyddion which I hadn't heard of before.

Another tool for collectors is a UV light. It can help in identifying tagging details.
Here are 2 tools i use. One is a new battery operated one and the other is old school {but the best] Below shows the 2 U lights i use...Also shows tagging error.

If stamp collectors need more software/hardware to enhance the collecting experience, here is a couple more.
1 - First is a "THIRKELL - POSITION FINDER"...This gauge is used to isolate individual ERRORS/ODDITIES/ETC. to be able to go back to the exact area of concern...Or to past the information to another collector with one to understand what is apparent on a particular stamp.
2 - Second a software over lap circle i use to align on a cancel to see if possible another cancel is the same/different...The WERT.png is a downloadable software to be placed over all circular cancels as i have shown below.
3 - BLANK stamps to used to place ERROR/VARIETY/ETC. marks as found on stamps..Hunt them down..here are lots out there and not just from Canada.
ANY QUESTIONS..JUST ASK. Robert

@wert, where did you get the stand for the Raytech lamp? In fact, I have two. I tried to build a stand but now I prefer to lay on side so the illumination is sideways.

There is another software program to do measurement differences between say 2 stamps. Below is a quick picture that can identify percentages differences on your computer to gain information.
Here is a Window ruler to download....I have 2 i use, but are Linux available only.
Window software link...

Why do you need a dedicated app like that? Any graphics program can give you the colour you click on. At least that's the case when it comes to Apple computers or Linux. I'm not sure about PC's running Windows, but you probably need it. Especially when someone scans a stamp and they submit an 8-½x11 scan of a full page with the stamp in the UL corner of image!

I tried the color picker but color on stamps is rarely solid so if you sample around you get different readings.

That's the problem! Look closely and colours on the computer are made up of many shades. But which one is the one you want? You have to zoom in to pick the closest!

Here is one more nice software item that will use an electronic perf. gauge. You can use GIMP that i added earlier for free downloads.
Robert
1 - First, scan a stamp at 600 DPI {only} 2 - Second, bring the stamp up in GIMP. 3 - Drag and drop the GIF. i added over top of GIMP. 4 - Right click on GIF and download.
You will see what it does below...
Here is the GIF to download.

I bought (for a couple bucks) Stamp Analyser from the Mac App Store, for use on my iMac. It analyzes the stamp to give you a grade of quality and perfs, margin width and stamp dimensions. It is available for Windows, Mac and iOS. If interested it can be found at the Rakium Inc. website. Sorry WERT , no Linux!

Hi, I was asking about the experience in this area for stamp scan enhancement in a new post, somebody redirected me here. Normally I prefer to stick to one or two software, rather than download several… any way I’m using GIMP and Lightroom. Still considered we need a group discussion about the following: • Best scan resolution. I don’t see my scanner (maximum 1200dpi) can get the resolution of detail mentioned in one example of the second post. • Photo enhancement tools to use: - Sharpening
- Color decompose
- Color replacement
- Tricks for cancellation removal
- Another
About the PDF file, due to cannot be attached here still is possible to put the file under a share link (like Dropbox), and everybody can grab with out to overflow WERT with emails. In my case, I am using GIMP’s color decompose tool to facilitate the inspection of detail in transfer identification for those annoying yellow stamps. Still, I don’t know how to remove cancellation or other tricks…

octavius , GIMP an open source alternative for imaging can be used in many ways to explore and study your stamps and if Robert ( WERT ) was still with us, I think he would agree. As for GIMP itself and enhancing scans, I took Robert's first stamp and applied a couple of the options available in the software (Colors|Brightness- Contrast & Filters|Enhance|Sharpen). The results come pretty close to replicating the example shared earlier.
For my own plating efforts, I find converting the image to grey-scale helps to remove some of the visual distraction and allows one to focus in the attempt to discover clichés, variants or other anomalies in a particular stamp.
To learn more as time and interest permits, I suggest an Internet search with the term "Digital Philately" and see what you can find...
Have fun and happy collecting!
