Hi one and all. I have today received a lovely set of commemorative stamps in the post however, the idiot postman has, cancelled the stamps by scribbling black biro / ballpoint pen ink onto the stamps to cancel them. My question is this how do I remove the ballpoint pen from the stampface. Without damaging the stamp, and why do they do this? I can't believe he has ruined a fine set of commemorative stamps in this manner. I understand that yes I could re use the stamps, resulting in lost revenue for the post office, but come on a post mark would in my book, would of made them complete, not malicious damage to fine stamps.š¤ Martin.

We all know how you feel , but it is unfair to refer to the postman as an āidiotā , he or she is simply following instructions from a superior. Mail which has escaped automatic cancelling should be defaced to prevent fraudulent re-use.
Of course a lot is ignored and appears un-cancelled, but. A percentage will be defaced in this way. We hate it as collectors , but rules is rules and unless the postman is issued with a handstamp the biro will be used.
It is particularly infuriating when the pen cancel is used on an item that already has a faint or lightly struck cancel .
I do not believe there is any satisfactory way to remove biro ink..........that is why it is used.

As the above user mentioned, itās impossible to clean it up. I suggest that you should request the sender to have the stamps hand cancelled the next time to avoid this type of situation.

I am see more letters arriving with out post mark. I think it is because the automated machines cannot Ā» see Ā» all the multiple stamps. as others stated is is the postieās job to ensure of cancellation to ado Iād re use. Hand cancelling is not something new. I have many examples of 19th century stamps with so many different types of inked or pencil marks.

I am sorry that this has happened to you, Martin ( nagachilli), but just as Alex ( vikingeck) has suggested, we should not jump to conclusions about the postal worker that did it. He or she was probably under orders to do so, and it most likely represents a failure of equipment which should have taken care of the job. Sadly, it seems to be happening more often these days rather than less. But if you look in the thread that Peter ( brightonpete) has cited in his post, you will realise two important things: - 1) You are not being singled out; this has happened to many of us, so we can empathise
- 2) This has been going on for as long as there have been stamps, as you will see examples of pen cancels more than 100 years old
So, we feel your pain, but don't let it get you down. And as guilloutran has pointed out, if you know the sender, you may want to suggest to that person to have the stamps hand cancelled the next time, which usually avoids the "Marker Monkey" routine.

For a time, some years ago, any uncancelled stamps on my mail (I live in the UK) were defaced by tearing off a corner from each stamp. This was even more annoying than pen markings. At least until I read that this was precisely how early Afghan stamps were cancelled! After that I appreciated the historical reference

Hello again, Thanks for all your comments, and they are much appreciated. I realise the postie is under orders, but hey guess what I received again today, yep you guessed it. Gosh.. ! Would upload photo, but how do you do that, image hosting? Third party sites? Is there no way to simply add an image as you create your post. Have read article on image posting not a lot of help to me, perhaps I am a bit stupid. Martin.

nagachilli: the easiest way is to send n email to admin requesting an account. Then you just have to click the "Upload images" button in the upper right of the message window to add your photos. It's just that you need a separate account for doing this. Good luck & waiting for some pics from you!

Alternatively you can just use the 'add image to post' button without any account being needed... This is not available on the app but appears once you switch to the desktop version:
