What I collect: The World...just printing and mounting as I go...call me crazy!

Below is the page I mounted several days ago. I am missing the 16 pfg, Sc. no. 162. This is the initial, lithographed printing, but later redrawn stamps in this series are all typographed. Scott notes the following, "Used values of Nos.155-171 are for cto reprints with printed cancellations. The reprints differ slightly from originals in design and shade". The difficulty is that it doesn't describe these differences or how to tell them apart. Also, to me, this is saying that all the reprints are cto with printed cancellations, so I am assuming that everything on the page below is a reprint. I have no stamps of this lithographed set that do not have a cto cancel on them. Am I interpreting this correctly? Also, to me the cancels on the stamps below certainly look like cto cancels but they don't look printed to me. There seems to be too much variation in the strength of the cancel strike. Opinions? Meanwhile, my old Michel 1989 Deutschland Spezial has a two page spread just on this 1953 issue. I don't have time to sit and muddle through the German language with my Michel German to English glossary to puzzle this out. Does anyone know of an online resource with more information regarding this specific 1953 series?

This is outside my collecting area, so I can't really be of much assistance. However, if you haven't looked at Jay Carrigan's guide to these issues, you should. It was on his website which has since lapsed following his passing, but you can still access it through the Wayback Machine here.

The 1957 litho reprints of the 1953 litho originals are actually not identical. There were some minor design changes, and these changes were subsequently used for the typographed issues.
The easiest to spot/remember difference between the 1957 litho reprints and the 1953 litho originals is the spacing of the letters of "DEUTSCHE" above "DEMOKRATISCHE" at the bottom left. -- In the 1957 litho reprint and the typographed issues, the last "E" in "DEUTSCHE" is right above the "A" in "DEMOKRATISCHE" -- In the 1953 litho originals, the last "E" in "DEUTSCHE" is further right above the "AT" in "DEMOKRATISCHE"
I think Nigel had a picture of one of his 1953 postally used litho originals next to his 1957 CTO litho reprint. I'll see if I can find it and pilfer it post it.

I forgot to mention, it looks like all the stamps on the page in your first post are 1957 litho reprints.

Found Nigel's pic (left stamp 1953 original, right stamp 1957 reprint): By far, most used examples are 1957 CTO reprints.

PostmasterGS , thank you that page you provided the link for is extremely detailed for all of the stamps in that series. khj , I will have to go back and re-visit my dupes now, though most, I think, are the 1957 reprints. The difference between a real postal cancel and the cto cancel is pretty obvious and I am pretty sure all of mine, even the dupes have cto cancels. Thank you for your help. This is just what I was looking for.

Also, probably because Scott does not separately list the reprints, Steiner does not have spaces for them. I might have to just create a separate blank page and have the above page in my album with a bunch of empty mounts.

Man, it seems like when I started collecting back in the early 70's, I had a ton of these. I'm sure my memory is blurry about it. Anyway, I had no idea they were CTO's back then. Of course, I didn't know what a CTO was when I was twelve years old. I just thought it was odd that I had lots of stamps that were canceled but still had visible gum on the back.

I remember having a pile of them as a kid when I started collecting worldwide. But then I became overwhelmed by the sheer numbers to collect. I gave that up and all disappeared. Now that I am collecting them as a series (and country) I wish I had kept them!

There is also paper varieties. Most have clean cut perfs, but some paper is thicker and softer with messy perfs.
I should brush up on my German to help wade through Michel! Scott is useless in this series.

Hi Brighton Pete,
I wanted to ask if you were the one who has designed and made available the DDR Album Pages from 1968-1990. I found the free download on "The Stamp Web". I really like the way they are put together, particularly the fact that unlike Steiner, and others, you have the individual stamp description, which for me is a real winner?
I was just wondering if, (and that is assuming that you are the creator), you have any plans to complete the pages to 1945?
Very best regards
Brad

Thanks, uppercanadian - that certainly was made by me alright! I had been using the Graphic.app on my iMac to create album pages. Then I started using Album Easy, so that's why the earlier pages are missing on that web site.

Hi Pete,
Super, I am glad to have met the creator. As I said, I really like it.
Do you have any plans on completing 1945-1968??
Thanks,
Brad

Well, I had thought about it, but that's 135 or so pages!
I could export them all to pdf if you want that. Just don't hold your breath! Maybe I'll try to make an Automator macro to do that for me!

Hi Pete,
Okay, I get the part about the 135 pages. It is a load of work. Sorry I don't understand the other technical stuff. But if you can put something onto PDF, that would be awesome. But I don't want you to go to a huge effort for me. I mean I will use your pages from 1968 on, and I guess I can use Steiner for before then. To be honest, my main reason for joining Stamp Forum, which I had not heard about before, was because I stalked you down and learned you were posting here. Sorry if that seems creepy, but it was just for the early album pages.
Because you had done them, I thought you were a big collector of DDR. I have everything DDR in MNH from 1960 to the 1991. Apart from about 20 stamps, I have everything before then as well some MNH, and some used. But it all sits in stock books. I would really love to mount them in an album.
Anyway, as I said, I don't want to put you out.

They are m much nicer in an album. I'll get around to it when my brain lets me!
I'm glad you appreciate my attempt at making an album

Greetings, Found this nice thread on my favorite DDR stamp series, and would like to share some from my accumulation; examples of precanceled sheets, no gum. Apologies that the images show up by half sheet due to the scanner size. This would clarify how the stamps were precanceled, and also why the precanceled (or CTO) reprint stamps have rather regular one-quarter cancellations on them. - Hironobu
