Are mint stamps worth hanging on to? Are they best left packaged as when they were sent or should they be in albums and the presentation packaging thrown away?

staffordMint Never Hinged Stamps are usually worth more (CV) than used stamps - They can be mounted like all stamps - In some circumstances, used stamps may have a higher CV. I collect both and it each collector's preference - some just collect used stamps - others replace some used stamps with Mint NH or Mint SH stamps - I do not understand your "worth hanging on to" ?? By are they worth hanging on to, I simply mean should I just box them up and put them in the loft or get rid. The only real value to me is one of sentiment....the packs themselves have little value. The interest that I have is why my dad collected such a seemingly random set of mint presentation packs. Personally if I was collecting them, I'd have collected by theme or date or else EVERY issue....otherwise what's the point? smauggie….not the first time you've rolled that out I suspect

stafford Not used to this kind of "stamp talk" - Know you are new and you want to position yourself rapidly and this is "great" !! Since you have not really collected for a long period, there are some good threads to read on this Forum - just put a word in research up there and ask for a thread search. A lot of questions you are asking have been answered here Have fun - "Respect of other members" is our motto here - we do have very serious collectors and knowledge is also present. René

stafford, presentation packs are different than if you were just collecting mint stamps. Are you in the US? Are you referring to something like the annual stamp yearbook from the post office? Some of these are expensive to purchase and grow in value over the years. Typically you would hang on to it as is rather than separate the stamps from the pack and mount them separately. Regardless of what you decide make sure they are stored in a place that is cool and dry rather than hot and humid for extended periods of time. The mint stamps in the pack will become fused together or whatever surface they are in contact with over time.

I was thinking about framing and hanging in my bedroom...I love the artwork and personally think they should be viewed as opposed to gathering dust somewhere. Gonna need more than one wall though!

I have printed enlarged images of stamps and framed them to put on the wall as art.
I do not know what you mean by presentation packs.

I do not know what you mean by presentation packs. Ok Re Presentation packs for Al and others : Since stafford is in the UK I know what he means. The Royal mail releases new issues in sheets for sale individually at Post office counters but for collectors the will produce PRESENTATION PACKS which contain all the issues in the set , sometimes a miniature sheet plus a folder with all the designer information and background to the issue. Without breaking open the pack there is really no easy way to display these ,so usually they are kept intact. There are dealers in the UK who specialise in these and SOME presentation packs command a high price. They have a premium over the face value at point of sale and will often be expensive to buy a year or two later than issue. sadly many of the early packs suffered from cellophane shrinkage and start to curl , and for most packs from the 1970-1990 era dealers offer to buy at less than face value so possibly the best option for most of these is to simply use the stamps for postage . What ever you do DONT store them in the Loft !!!!! Damp and neglect will wreck them !
