I have come across this stamp and spent a lot of hours researching it without any plausable or convincing result! So, I wish to invite fellow members to help me identify this stamp! From the internet: One from a different stamp forum, the member described it as a revenue stamp and it was indeed cancelled on the side. The second hit was on ebay described as a rare mint donation stamp vignette and sold for USD 10.00 The third search result, also on the same auction site, described it as a Mint Very Rare Local Issue Essay or Proof stamp and was asking USD 800.00 for it! Well, should I get all excited about this stamp?

...Well, should I get all excited about this stamp?... Who wouldn't get excited about having a stamp with a dancing bear, with or without the chain? This site attributes this supposed charity (or donation) stamp to be the work of Kurt Dahmann.

I have limited knowledge on German stamps.
from this example I can not see evidence of cancel. Does it have gum?
From experience, I would not get too excited at this point. The comments you posted is a huge value/price difference as well quiet a difference in what it is. I tend to be wary of claims of « rare » as there is no exact definition of the term. If it is as « essay » then they could be a rarity factor. Depends on how many produced and have survived. Was it meant to be postally used? Hopefully more infirm German collectors on the Forum can direct you to where to look for further info. If possible to contact the sellers you mentioned and ask if the have a catalogue number or how they attained the info as to type and a value. Hopefully they would reply. It would be interesting see your results. Good luck.

Thanks everybody for solving the mystery of this donation vignette! I needed a glass or two of red wine to calm myself down after all the excitement! I translated the German pamphlet and the story of the the stamp´s origins are indeed interesting and historic! Although not valid for postage (hence I could not find it in the catalogues) some apparently tried to use it on a cover for mailing too! It does seem to have gum but there are no obvious watermarks. I shall try to google the name Kurt Dahmann to see if there is any extra info available. Keep safe everybody.
