I thought that I would start a general thread for any GB covers. This cover was sent from Portsmouth & Southsea to Massachusetts, USA on 20th July 1931 with George V 1d red and halfpenny green. I'm 95% sure that the bookplate attached to the cover bears a genuine Charles Dickens autograph. Scan_20210223 by Daniel, on Flickr

There were previous threads that were deleted because the images were no longer there. There seems to be surprisingly little content for GB. My intention is that, rather than have several threads with few posts, have one thread for general covers for others to add their favourite covers of any type. All the best, Daniel

A First Day Cover for the Stamp Centenary stamps issued on 6th May 1940 featuring Queen Victoria and King George VI. An exhibition was held by The Royal Philatelic Society, at Lancaster House in London which, at that time, was the home of the London Museum. In aid of The Red Cross and St John Fund. The cover is addressed to J & R Darracott Ltd who certainly published specialised stamp albums at that time. Scan_20210225 by Daniel, on Flickr Scan_20210225 (2) by Daniel, on Flickr

An original 2001 letter from Wing Commander K H Wallis. Ken Wallis was a British aviator and inventor who served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and flew 28 bomber missions over Germany. He later became a leading exponent of autogiros. He is probably best known as Sean Connery's stunt double in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice flying his autogiro WA-116, Little Nellie. In 2008 the letter was turned into a makeshift first day cover for one of the Ian Fleming James Bond stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the publication of Dr No. A one off. Hi Smauggie:
I just noted that the cover you posted above, coincidentally, is addressed to Carl Becken. He was a stamp and coin collector, maybe even a dealer, and the designer of an popular airmail border design used during the 1930s and 1940s.. There was some discussion of the envelope design and copyright notice at thestampforum.boards.net/post/79049There is a high probability that your cover carried philatelic or numismatic advertising. Do you have the contents or is there a return address on the reverse? Just curious.
Thanks.

The letter rate was increased on May 17 1965 from 3d to 4d.A 2 1/2 d stamp was bisected to make up the differnce...Obviously philatelic...and overpaid by a farthing.

Founded in 1934 by James Martin (later Sir James) and Captain Valentine Baker, Martin-Baker is a British company, originally manufacturing aircraft before they specialised in ejection seats and aircraft safety equipment. Captain Baker was killed in a test flight accident in 1942. The company is still run by the Martin family. This cover, dated 24th July 1971, marks the 25th anniversary of the first live ejection by Bernard Lynch in 1946. Please post your Ejected Mail here Scan_20210310 (3) by Daniel, on Flickr

50th Anniversary of the Liberation of Europe 8th May 1945 Strictly speaking this is not actually a cover since the depicted stamps are printed on the card. It was produced by Charles P Stirling, Royal Naval Philatelic Officer for The Royal Naval Philatelic Society. Proud of his achievement, his name appears bottom left and his initials twice in cancels over the faux stamps and once more at the bottom middle. It's a bit of a cut and paste job, literally, but all credit to him for the genuine signatures that he has organised and in some cases cut out and pasted on. So, we have the autographs of five Admirals and three holders of the George Cross for bravery during World War II: Lieutenant Commander R V Moore GC CBE RNVR Lieutenant Commander J Bridge GC GM & Bar RNVR Lieutenant Commander W H Taylor GC MBE RNVR Scan_20200731 (4) by Daniel, on Flickr

The Douglas Bader Foundation Cover
Sir Douglas Bader KB CBE DSO* DFC* (1910-1982) was a Royal Air Force flying ace during World War II credited with 22 aerial victories. He joined the RAF in 1928 but lost both of his legs in an accident in 1931 and was retired on medical grounds. When World War II began he was able to retrain and rejoin the RAF.
This cover was issued in 2001 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the 'Bader Bale Out' (depicted on the cachet) when he baled out over German occupied France. He was captured and spent the rest of the war in prison camps ending up, after various escape attempts, in Colditz which was liberated in April 1945.
This cover was produced by Benham for the Foundation. Features an Arthur Harris postage stamp and an old 1 shilling 1968 RAF anniversary Stamp. It is signed by his widow, Lady Bader.

Another First Day Cover, this time featuring a set issued as part of a long running series marking the Millennium. This particular set, Sound and Vision, was issued on 5th December 2000. This cover was produced for the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, makers of the Great Bell, known as Big Ben, in the Clock Tower, later the Elizabeth Tower, at the Houses of Parliament. The Whitechapel Bell Foundry was founded in Aldgate, London in 1420. They manufactured the Liberty Bell in 1752 and Big Ben was cast in 1858. The business closed in 2017.

An interesting cover marking the 90th Anniversary of the sinking of RMS Titanic on 31st May 1911, with a pictorial cancellation. Also, a pre-decimal SS Great Britain stamp with a British Heritage Collections handstamp. The cover has been signed by Millvina Dean who was a baby on board the Titanic when it sank. Her parents had decided to emigrate to the US and they were transferred to the Titanic due to a coal strike. Her mother and brother also survived but the father, Bertram Dean, was lost. Millvina only became a celebrity in her seventies after a career as a civil servant, she was a cartographer, and lived to the age of 97.

An interesting but slightly odd cover from Benham issued as a first day cover for the regional definitives issued on 23rd April 2001 but commemorating the Battle of Waterloo. Issued with a replica Waterloo Medal and with an RAF association, when it was later flown from Biggin Hill to Waterloo and back for the Veterans Charities Consortium.

A mourning letter sent from Rugby to Annan,Scotland on Feb 13 1873. A back-stamp shows it arrived in Annan the next day,Feb 14 which shows how efficient the postal service was over a century ago.Based on the lack of a full address,I would imagine the recipient was a well-known resident of Annan.I did a little research and found the local newspaper was owned by a William Cuthbertson,so this might be the same family. What are the odds of a similarly addressed letter being delivered today ??

One day from Rugby to Annan in 1873 is indeed impressive. However I reckon most of my UK mailings if posted in Aberdeen by 11 am will still get a good chance of next day delivery in mainland GB. According to feedback reports I have been getting on eBay. Royal Mail, I am a fan! Back on track however I was given this very late use cover yesterday. posted 1946 with GeoV Downey heads from 1912 and Victoria three half pence lilac from 1883. Both very late usage but still valid in 1946.
