F Hugh Vallencey
An envelope addressed to F Hugh Vallancey, London with a Sale, Manchester postmark dated 21st July 1924. The stamp is a George V three halfpence brown with a control number U 22. Nice, but on the face of it, not terribly interesting. However Hugh Vallencey was, most certainly, an interesting philatelic figure. He started collecting stamps while on his voyage to serve in the Boer War via Gibraltar and St Helens. Later he wrote for, then became the publisher of, Stamp Collecting magazine. He then became a philatelic publisher with his Vallencey Press, mainly producing books and pamphlets relating to British stamps. His stamp collection included Control Numbers, hence the cover. Perhaps, best known for being the publisher of the second set of Coronation Souvenir Stamps, see this link and this link. He had to retire in 1948 and died in 1950.
Here is an advert for his company taken from Fred Melville's book Great Britain: Line Engraved Stamps

Latest Cover from the British Forces Philatelic Service on 15th April 2022 80th Anniversary of the Award of the George Cross to Malta The people of Malta suffered terrible conditions during the siege of the Island during World War II. Their bravery was honoured by the award of the George Cross to the Island in April 1942 by King George VI. To mark the 80th anniversary of this BFPS has produced, in conjunction with the George Cross Island Association (GCIA), a commemorative cover to be issued on the 15th of April 2022. Images on the cover show the Island of Malta and the George Cross medal. Alongside these are the crest of Malta and the logo of the GCIA. A 1st class stamp bearing the image of H.M. The Queen will be cancelled by the exclusive BFPS 3238 special handstamp specially designed for the occasion. A standard unsigned version will cost £8 each whilst a numbered limited edition of 80 signed by the Honourable Tim Lewin (Son of the Late Admiral of the Fleet Lord Lewin and organiser of the London Maltese Siege Memorial) will cost £16 each. The commemorative covers include an information insert and will be presented in a protective cellophane sleeve making a very collectable souvenir of the anniversary. Profits from the sale of these covers, after production costs, will be donated to the GCIA Association to support their work. The covers can be ordered from the BFPS online shop (www.bfps.org.uk) or by post by sending a cheque (payable to ‘BFPS CIC’) to BFPS, The Old Post Office, Links Place, Elie, LEVEN, KY9 1AX. 1979 Pony Express Race
The Pony Express was an express mail service that operated between St Joseph, Missouri and Sacremento, California using a relay of horse-riders. It operated from April 1860 until October 1861 when the first transcontinental telegraph service was established.
In the bicentennial year, 1976, an endurance race was held along the original route.
In 1979 the British Post Office sponsored a similar event across the same trail for the 100th anniversary of the death of Rowland Hill. This cover, marking the event, depicts the stamps printed directly on the cover with a Pony Express handstamp. An unusual item.

But the stamps weren't postally valid, were they ?

Can't see that the stamps were postally valid and the purest might question is , it a philatelic cover. Imprinted UK stamps on an American cover for a Race sponsored by the British Post Office. Putting all that to one side first time I have seen this cover and yes an unusual item for your collection.

Almost certainly not produced by the British Posts Office but likely to have been produced by the Race organisers. On that basis I would classify it as a semi-official philatelic souvenir

The BEA ( British European Airways ) company offered a special Airport -to -airport service for many years before the UK Post Office used air for transport of regular mail in UK. Designed for very urgent business packages, documents and letters, special stamp labels such as this were added to pay an express fee to the Airline.
While this cover is a philatelic commemoration, the labels can sometimes be found on regular mail, but not common commercially used.

The Royal Tournament was a military display, or tattoo, and pageant held from 1880 to 1999. Latterly held at the Earls Court Exhibition Centre in London. This cover from 1988 must have been the one I attended. A very grand and exciting event but by 1999 was making a loss and was cancelled.
It was revived as the British Military Tournament from 2010 to 2013 when it was again cancelled.
The cover has a special British Forces Postal Service hand stamp and the insert gives us a history of the BFPS.
