Hello, I am originally from the Finger Lakes Region of New York but moved to the suburbs of Houston, Texas about 12 years ago. My husband inherited an accumulation of stamps from his father around the same time. These stamps languished in a small old trunk until July of last year when COVID confinement motivated me to take a look. I found exactly what I expected, and something that I did not. I expected the stamps to have little monetary value, which they did, quite unexpectedly, I fell in love with their beauty. It was the France Semi-Postal Scott B47, that gave me the stamp collecting bug. I began by purchasing some lots on eBay and started mounting my French stamps on Steiner pages. I have finally decided to take the plunge into the Sage issues and have found myself overwhelmed and in need of some help. I am joining this forum to learn more about stamps and hope to make some new friends in the process. Sincerely, Patti

Welcome pattib to TSF France is a country which I originally thought when I returned to stamping that I would sort, sell, liquidate or otherwise get rid of and focus on US stamps. A bit over two years later I haven't even looked at the US stamps and gotten quite into France, Belgium and much of wester Europe. I am by no means an expert but I can share what I've learned (about the Sage series and others) and learn e in the process as well. If you haven't gotten a specialized catalogue for France I would recommend one of several, Yvert & Tellier (the 125 year anniversary issue just came out, or Maury Ceres & Dallay, or Spink|Maury, all of which are very useful, even you'll still have questions (but your French will improve)!! Cheers Stan Northern California

Nice to meet you stainlessb I did by a 2015 copy of Yvert & Tellier, but found I was not ready to brush up on French and learn about stamps at the same time. I have no doubt I will learn a lot from you!

Hi pattib and welcome! Whereabouts in the Fingerlakes? Although I grew up out by Camillus, I lived in Auburn for a few years, and had a (brief) business in the Waterloo/Seneca Falls area! Andy

Hello Andy, ajkitt it's nice to meet you. I actually grew up in Auburn, so it is a small world. I miss autumn, the stars, and my family, but I love it here in Texas.

Hello Bob, bobstew617 there are so many beautiful French stamps that was just the first that caught my eye. It has been a while since I have been to Orlando, but if my in-laws are to be believed, the winters are much nicer there than in Texas.

from Barcelona, Catalonia, Europe. Just 160 km (100 miles) South of the French border. But, although I can speak and read French, and I know they have nice stamps, I don't collect them.

Welcome to the group pattib Have you by any chance found any stamp shops in the Houston area? I'm not too far from the north side (I'm in Crockett, which is Houston County----not to be confused with Harris County!).

jpotx113 I haven't been to any, but I had found this one in while looking to see if there are any harrisstampshop.com/ It says they specialize in Postal History, Revenues, and Texana. I feel like I had seen another before which specialized in Confederate Stamps, but I can not find it again. Hope that helps!

Hi, Patti ( pattib), and welcome to TSF! Sorry for being a bit slow to post you a greeting. I also collect classic France, and in fact, I lived in France during 2018-2019, which only increased my interest in the stamps. Anyway, it's good to have you here, and good to see you already posting on other threads. Enjoy your time with us! -Chris ( Beryllium Guy) US expatriate currently living in the UK

I collect France for a long time, and can answer questions about the earlier ones- especially how to distinguish between the France and the Colony issues- some take the 40c Ceres 1849 as real- but its in fact the cheaper colony issue...

onyks, I want to jump on the Finger Lakes bandwagon a little bit to mention that my ancestors lived in the small town of Potter. They left the area in the 1880s and settled in Shelby, Michigan. My great, great, great grandmother, Lydia Sackett (Saunders) was born there.

onyks I am glad to know you are available to answer questions about the early France issues. After trying to identify the few Sage varieties that Scott distinguishes, I may let the Napoleon and Ceres issues languish for a while longer. I have quite a few of these issues, but not enough to distinguish varieties at this point, I think. khj Hi neighbor, I did make it through the storm okay, I hope you did as well. darkormex It is a small world!

Welcome Patti ( pattib ) to TSF and congratulations on your 50th post! I have enjoyed your showings to date and especially the album page you shared of the French semi-postals; true gems :-) Just curious, did you ever get an answer to your question about the violet colouring of those French classics, i.e. Scott n.º 326 & 326a? Again, welcome and I look forward to more of your posting and continued dialogue...
Happy collecting! -Vince
