OK, I have a used copy of BVI #8 (Scott number) that aligns with the perfs, colour, etc. as described in the catalogue. But I also have another that is smaller, more red around the margin than brownish red, and that's perf 12.5. It too is used and bears the same kind of dot matrix cancellation pattern common to the era. I suspect it's a fake rather than a variety, but Scott doesn't help here--says nothing useful about either the variety or the possibility of fakes. Anyone have a Gibbons or some other literature that throws light on this, please?

Once again Scott is absolute rubbish when it comes to Cataloguing GB and Commonwealth ! Gibbons has no fewer than 8 listings for the 1/- Black and rose carmine. SG 11, 14,14b, 18,19,20 (with crimson frames into the margins) 21.21b retouched thin frame lines and white margins. as far as I can see all are perf 15 . No mention of perf 12.5 so it sounds either a fake or a reperf job.
We need a picture !

Our forum member classicalstamps has a fine website on stamp forgeries and his page on the British Virgin Islands shows a number of forged stamps which use dot cancellations - these were commonly used by forgers. The bottom of the page shows his sources for literature dealing with BVI forgeries, if you are unable to determine whether your stamps are genuine or not just by comparing image content. Ryan

I looked at my 2018 Scott Classic and they have Sc 7 and 8 (colored margins) for the 1/- issue. Each listing had suffix varieties for different papers,

Thanks everyone who responded. Very helpful. I'll try to upload a photo when I get a chance, and figure out how to do that. (Can't be that hard.....)
