Hello, I recently acquired some overprints on standard French issues used. I have gone through Michel, but my German is poor and I have may have missed something. Or they are all counterfeit.

Overprint on the right is for Fortress Lorient. The overprint (without the swastika, which is clearly in different ink) is listed in Michel Germany Specialized, but not on that stamp as far as I know. Also, the font is clearly different from what is shown in Michel. You can make your own decision on whether genuine. Maybe someone who knows the local occupation overprints can chime in. For a background on the overprint, please see article starting on page 2 of France and Colonies Philatelist No. 88.

The overprint on the left stamp is the same font type/size as overprint on right stamp. Unless I'm reading the cancel incorrectly, both the stamp and the postmark pre-date the German occupation considerably. The right stamp issue date also pre-dates the German occupation by about 15 years. Unless someone else can explain, then make of that what you will...

thank you khj, I was having a tough time reading the cancel on the left stamps as well, but noted both stamps are not of the same period as the occupation. I do find the occupation stamps interesting as there was chaos prevalent in that period of history. I have many more stamps that are from the period with no catalogue identification. I think that interests me more, for some reason.

To me, the left stamp looks like 15Dec1936. But I don't collect postmarks, so I defer to others on the proper date reading.

The shown overprints have no resemblance whatever with the original overprints. It is fair to assume, that they are bogus.
