Hi everyone. A friend opened a book on peonies the other day and a philatelic cover with an imperforate pair of peony stamps fell out. The catalog number in Unitrade is 2262c, but she looked in my 2020 catalog while visiting tonight and commented there was no value given. I double checked and an imperforate se-tenent pair is listed as $500.00 in italics. There was nothing for a cover.
Can someone help me understand why the CV might be in italics, and what the lack of a cover price might indicate?

The CV in italics means that the price quoted is at best a guess. It could be more or less, depending on the market.
At least, that is my take on the italics in catalogues.

Thanks brightonpete . I have been searching Unitrade, trying to figure it out and have not found an explanation. She mentioned wanting to sell them if they were worth anything and I directed her to a well known stamp auction house. I’m not sure whether I should suggest expertizing first or if the auction house will do that automatically?

polarbear , perhaps @studystamps can articulate the meaning of a valuation listed in italics. Assuming, of course, that he still gets notified when tagged. As an alternative, send him an email (rharris AT adminware DOT ca). If Unitrade follows the Scott convention, italicized values generally refer to items which are difficult to value accurately.

polarbearUnitrade 2262C is not listed in the FDC column and I believe you were talking about a FDC. René

Thanks tomiseksj. Will do. Yes renden, I noticed that. I can’t say for sure it was an FDC, having only looked at the stamps to double check and make sure they were indeed imperforate. However, it did look like an FDC with a cachet to the side. I did not check the date of the cancellation. I’m going to suggest she bring it with her next time she visits, so I can look at it in better light and be sure exactly what we’re looking at. There were some other peony stamps with it, but we hardly glanced at them. We were actually looking for the peony book for photos of peonies for my rug hooking. The fact what appeared to be an FDC and some stamps fell out when she opened it had us both laughing! This is so typical of this friend’s organization, or lack thereof!

Jean ( polarbear ), the answer to the second part of your question (the lack of a cover price) is found in the Introduction section of the Unitrade: "Where items are listed without prices, or without prices in some columns, the variety is known to exist but a value has not been established." (See the section titled Catalogue Value).

I emailed Mr. Harris and the owner sent a photo of the cover. It’s nothing more than a regular old 2262 FDC. We didn’t know they don’t cut the die cut stamps the whole way through on FDCs. Here’s the photo. Sigh. I have no idea how to get this right way up. ETA: the owner says there’s a faint perf line between the stamps, but I cannot see it. She says it has not cut between them though. She is going to bring me the cover later this week to look at in good lighting. I’ll scan the stamps so you can all have a better look close up. I found this experience very educational.

Well! It’s been a long time coming, but I finally have the peony cover in my hands. Hubby scanned a close up of the stamps. While we can see a faint impression of die cut perforations in real life, it was difficult for the scanner to pick it up. He had to really darken the image for even a faint line to show. If you’re having problems seeing it, look at the bottom edge between the two stamps - just above the cancellation. Anyways, this thread is long done, but I thought I’d add this image to complete it.
