I've been wanting to dip my toe into Thematic/Topical collecting for a while and this was one of the topics I wanted to attempt, so when the UK issued the following set last week I thought it was the perfect start! (and first time I've bought a new issue in a long long while). I wanted to concentrate on the authors and the books only and steer away from the TV & movie stuff (or even TV & movie adaptations of the books). Feel free to post anything that you have that you think would fit, I need to start researching and making a list!

I looked at actual photos of Ursula K Le Guin and the stamp did not do her justice.

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I haven't had anything to post in this thread for a while... but picked this up at London22 today: Souvenir sheet issued by Alderney (part of the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the Channel Islands) in 2006 (SG:GG-AL MSA273) commemorating the 100th birth anniversary of T.H.White who lived the last 20 years of his life on Alderney. Showing characters from Arthurian legend which he wrote about in his "Once & Future King" books.

What I collect: FDCs, plus some US modern and new issues. Topical interests include music, art, literature, baseball, space...

I love reading SF and fantasy, so this subtopic certainly appeals to me. Here are a pair of nicely done FDCs for the stamps issued by the U.K. in 2004 for the 50th anniversary of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. Well designed by Norvic Philatelics. And here's a FDC that I made last summer for USPS' Ursula K. Le Guin stamp. I tend to agree with the observation earlier in this thread that it's not a great likeness of Le Guin, but she's one of my favorite authors, and I couldn't let this issue pass without making a cover. I did a little sketch of Winter (Gethen), the planet in her masterpiece The Left Hand of Darkness, also seen in the background of the stamp, and added a quotation from her 2014 National Book Foundation speech. If I was making this today, I'd add some color to the drawing.

I've always been a big science fiction reader, and when I was younger I attended some SF conventions. I think that's where I got both of these covers. The first is really neat. It starts with a pictorial cancel from the 1998 World Science Fiction Convention, held in Baltimore, on a holographic space-station envelope that was issued by USPS a few years earlier (Sc U639). Then, later that year, a FDC cancellation was added for Scott 3238, from the Space Discovery series issued in Florida. Very cool combination! The second one is an FDC for all five stamps in the Space Fantasy series, issued in 1993 in Huntsville, Alabama (Sc 2741-45). The cachet is nice, although it's partially covered by the selvage. Onward and upward to the stars through stamps!

I'm going to use my 200th post to present these two stamps from Cameroon, issued 10/10/1978 to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of French novelist Jules Verne. SG CM841 depicting '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea' & SG CM840 showing 'From Earth to Moon'

Russian / American author Ayn Rand is best known for her novels 'The Fountainhead' and 'Atlas Shrugged' (which included elements of science fiction), but one of her earliest novella's 'Anthem' was set in a dystopian future, which very much allows her into this topic. This stamp (Scott 3308) was issued 22/4/1999 as part of the Literary Arts series.

Hugo Gernsback was a Luxembourgish-American magazine publisher, best known for publications including the first science fiction magazine 'Amazing Stories' in 1926. He is also credited with coining the term 'science fiction' in 1929. The annual Hugo awards are named after him! this stamp (sg LU 1673) was issued by Luxembourg on 16/3/2004 to commemorate his 120th birth anniversary.

Ernt Theodor Amadeus (Wilhelm) Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a Prussian author of fantasy & gothic horror (as well as an artist, a composer & a judge!) known for his supernatural and often macabre stories. This stamp (Michel DE-BE 426) was issued in Berlin on 31/12/1991 to commemorate his 150th death anniversary.

The Ursula K. Le Guin stamp discussed upthread has grown on me in the year and a half since it was issued. Not my favorite design, but still, how cool to see one of our most visionary science fiction writers honored this way? I recently picked up a collection of her short stories that I haven't read yet, which inspired me to clip a nice plate block from the half-used sheet I'd been using for occasional postage since 2021. Here, too, is a very nicely done maxicard-style FDC by Dragon Cards.

A perfect fit to this thread, this miniature sheet issued by San Marino in 1998 as a retrospective on a century of science-fiction literature:

Agreed, a perfect fit - I've been tracking this sheet on ebay for quite a while but have yet to pull the trigger. Thanks for sharing.
