This set featured an early self-adhesive issue. If you look carefully at the right most stamp you will notice mottling cause by the adhesive migrating to the top surface causing discoloration. Some believe self-adhesives will be less forever than gummed stamps.

angore, why is there a white rectangle behind that self-adhesive? Was part of the backing paper left on it perhaps?

I have no idea. Good question. In looking at it close up, there is some kind of stamp underneath near the center. The perfs show at bottom. Now, it also looks like some of shading may be the orangish background showing through. This is why it is whiter over the stamp underneath. I am going to do some more research. This is a typical stamp that shows the discoloration - should be whiter..

Mine isn't in very good condition either! I should replace it with a very nicely cancelled used.

The recommendation was to remove from liner to keep it looking new.

angore : You'd think they'd use well centred stamps on items like this!

I felt this was one of the better rendering of the American Eagle.

This issue covers "retarded children" but the term retarded is no longer consider proper. It looks like the new term in Intellectual Disability.

Hi angore The "retarded children" stamp at the time was normal wording back then...Now it is really not exceptable in today's society. And now they use the word "indigenous" people...I am old school and has always used the word Indian..To me it was NOT a slur
to "indigenous" people, but the society now a days frowns on it..But i never used the wording as an insult.

I still find it interesting that name America comes from someone who is not mentioned much in history books. We do have Columbus Day.
