I am hoping someone can help me with this query. In the picture below are some stamps I have recently soaked off paper, these bands that run up and down the stamps appeared after soaking. Does anybody know what caused this? Was the water too hot? Is it a security feature to prevent reuse? Are they now junk? I have not seen it on any other countries, just the GB stamps.

The stamps are printed with bands of ink that reacts to UV light. It allows automatic sorting machinery to identify the position of the stamp and cancel it as it passes through the machinery. In the UK they are referred to as phosphor bands. Normally just visible in daylight if held at an angle , but clearly show up under UV.
The fact that you see them here I am afraid means you have soaked too long . They should not be so washed out as you have here.

Thank you! I normally leave them soaking while I do other things, like go to work for 8 hours! I'll not do that again.

After ten minutes in lukewarm water the stamp is already starting to peel off or has already come off.

Yes certainly do not use “hot” water. .. lukewarm at best , just off cold. An 8 hour soak is certainly a bit long!
If I have time I tend to float rather than soak , but seldom work on more stamps than I can comfortably handle at one session.. maybe a dozen or twenty max.

I usually soak them for about 1 minute, as they are starting to come off paper by then. Unless they are the self-adhesive types, which are stuck and won't budge in water no matter how long they are soaking! Other methods are needed for them!
