I was over on SOR, and rrrphy talked about using his iPhone as a microscope. So I checked it out on my phone. I never thought of using my iPhone as a microscope. Amazing what it can do, even with my shaky hands! I need to set up a stand so I can get perfect photo's. Both are reduced in size for the forum.
This photo is Switzerland's 50+10c Minerals semi-postal (Scott B296) issued June 1, 1960...
This one is USA 20¢ Herman Melville (Scott 2094) issued August 1, 1984...
Awesome, if you ask me! The Celestron microscope, which they stopped supporting, probably after their first issuance of the device is now in the junk pile! It can be had for $10 plus postage (expensive if going outside Canada!) if anyone wants it!

polarbear: there's zoom setting when you open the camera, default display is 0.5, 1x and 2.5. Tap on the numbers and this appears...
Swipe the scale numbers and get up to 12x. This, mind you is on an iPhone 12.
It MAY be different on older phones, I'm not sure.

brightonpete - great images. I've only used my phone for coins and I'm not good at it. I need to do some reading! thanks.

brightonpete . Oh, I don’t have that feature on my phone. It’s an iPhone SE. Rats!
HOLD IT! There’s a magnifier app on this phone. It doesn’t say how much it’s magnifying by, but it’s definitely larger than the onboard photo app.
edit #2: can take a photo and send it to people, but not post it online. When I email it to me it loses its zoom function. 😔. I suspect if I send it to others it will not be zoomed either. Hmm...this bears further exploration.

To zoom when using the camera on your IPhone you touch the screen with two fingers close together and then, keeping them on the screen, spread them apart.

polarbear: is it saved in your "Photos" app? If so it should be the same as any photo you take.

polarbear - Are you zooming in on photos you've already taken? If that's the case when you send them they do not stay zoomed in.

@mr. H that is what I’m doing.
brightonpete , when I use the magnifying app to take a photo I get a message saying it will not be saved to my camera roll.
I’m sharing directly from the magnifying app...or trying to. When I share it in an email to myself it reverts to normal size. When I try to save the image, nothing happens at all.

You may have to get the magnifying glass showing what you want, then take a screenshot. Try that and see what happens. Odd you can't save the result automatically to your Photos.

You may need to go to settings to give the App access to save photos.

I think the screen shot kinda worked. I had to edit it in photos before uploading it here. I had to crop out the controls, which left precious little space for the image.
ETA: this is the highest magnification I can get. There’s no readout to tell me what it is.

I do need a stand to hold the phone steady while I shoot! I was just using the box with stainlessb 's Stamp Lift in it.
I know, I know... it'll be on it way soon. I need a sturdier box!

I was just holding mine by hand and the image was moving a lot. I’m thinking one of those small desktop tripods with an adapter to hold a cell phone might be a good idea.

I have both, but where the doodad that holds the phone is, is anyone's guess!

I was having really good results with this at about 3x: So even if my hands weren't steady enough to get decent results at 10x, the results are promising, even on a lowly iPhone 8+.

I'm able to get some great close-ups with my Samsung. Now I just need to come up with some type of stand.
