In a recent lot I received there were some tax stamps, which up to now.... I haven't paid all that much attention to... up to now- many are COB # TX3 -11 1895 (as the next issues did not come out until 1916 and are the same design). The later issues TX 12 - 16 are listed as "Type changes. The shadow line surrounding the drawing of the lion is thicker, the relief is more accentuated" (from Google translate) I either have only the earlier issues or I simply do not see this thicker line surrounding the lion (on some in places... but then I find another and the postmark is prior to the 1916 issue date, The"relief" being more accentuated..... i am not sure where this is either- in between the inner and out circle around the number in some cases I see more horizontal lines... but then I run into the same postmark date issue. If anyone has both and could post side by side of the same denomination/color I would be most appreciative! If you can pick out from my scan below one of the later issues, let me know!!! Some of the colors only appear in the earlier issue.... but this hasn't been much help either Thanks in advance!

stainlessb - I thought these were postage due stamps, or is tax what the Belgian catalogs call that?

@jerffs
COB has them listed as tax stamps (Timbres-taxe) but I see they appear to be one in the same... perhaps meaning it is a 'tax' one pays because not enough postage was affixed(?!)

This is the tx12/16 dating from 1916. With the 1916 version there is also a remark in the catalog: From 25/04/1919 there were name stamps from the offices who issued the stamps being placed to prevent fraud. The fraud happened because some of these stamps got stolen during the war. The name stamps were mostly attached by hand. The biggest difference is indeed the shadow line around the lion is more curved.

Hi Stan stainlessb - I recently got some postage due stamps of the later variety, and when the colour is the same (like the 10c) these images clearly show the retouched shadow on the left-hand lion which is the best way to identify if they are from the 1st or second set: Note the 2nd on (#TX13A) is the variant with a post office name hand stamped on it as well.

I finally had enough to make a good educated guess on color (?) TX 3 - TX 11 1895 some color shades may be up to changes in the future if I come across more lots.

I received this in a small lot (and this is in fact the stamp that caused me to bid). i am unsure if it is a 1919 surcharge or ?? Ingelmunster is in West Flanders. Anyone have a more solid idea than mine?

Hi Stan, I believe that is COB #TX13A - the 1919 issue with the issuing post office name handstamped on it. The only thing that I find odd is the red-brown colour as this value is usually a carmine red. For instance, here is my copy:

Hi Chris
OK, I was on the right track1 The uploaded color isn't true. It looks about like th estamp on my page (previous post), and none of my dupes are as 'bright" as your scans.
Thanks for confirming what i thought might be!
Cheers Stan
