With the end of the Korean War the Won-currency was devalued massively. On February 14th,1953 a new currency the "Hwan" was introduced. 100 Won became one Hwan. Stamps in the old currency were declared invalid.
Definitives,issued April 5th,1953,watermarked "curved lines".

The first 126 souvenir sheets of South-Korea,issued between 1948 -1958 range from expensive to very expensive. Only the 1952/52 series of 22 s.s.,honoring the allied countries of the Korean War,is quite affordable at less than $ 1000.- for the set. Till 1957 those s.s. were not sold to the public, but were given to officials as presents.
I own just one of those early s.s.,what I bought for my butterfly thematic stamps collection. With a print of 500 it is my rarest "butterfly".

Definitives, watermark "curved lines",issued Feb.10th,1955 and Oct.19th,1955 (20 Hwan). I do not know the story behind it,but the 20 Hwan is the second most expensive stamp of South Korea, in mint condition. (cat.value about € 1500.-).However in used condition it costs only about 1 % of mint. (3 s.s. exist,no 20 Hwan s.s.)

Definitives,issued Oct.2nd,1955 (20 H.),Oct.19th,1955 (15 & 50 H.),Nov.1st,1955 (100 & 200 H.). (2 s.s.,20 & 200 H.,exist)
From here on throughout 1956 stamps were printed on laid paper. Laid paper looks like watermarked:
On Korean stamps it is normally vertical (looking like standing upright), but there are also stamps where the lines run horizontal.
Both varieties (from a different stamp),as seen from the backside.
Of the shown set, only the 20 Hwan exists on vertical and horizontal laid paper. The horizontal one is more expensive, about ten times as much,as the vertiical one.

10th anniversary of the Korean navy,issued Nov.11th,1955. (s.s. exists) Type I
This is an unusual stamp for Korea,as it exists in three different types. The stamp above is type I,the "normal" one. Although the shown one, would delight fly-speckers.
Type I
Type II
Hwan-characters are connected on type II
Type I
Type III
The second character of the top inscription misses the stick-out. That changes the meaning from "Han" (part of the name of the Republik of Korea) to "Hin" meaning "bright".
All three types occur in all sheets of 50. 30 stamps are type I,10 each are type II and type II. There are connected pairs of different types:
Here type I and type III
I have another stamp,with a flaw:
I am not sure,wether this is a plate-flaw,or just a printing-flaw.

The only commemorative, what exists on vertical and horizontal laid paper. The latter values about three times as much,as the vertical laid paper.

Definitives on laid paper,issued May 15th (20 H.),June 1st (1,2,5 H.),June 5th,1956 (10,15 H.)
The 5,10,15 and 20 Hwan show a different last character of the top inscription, than the 1955 laid paper series:
left 1955,right 1956

The 2 Hwan of the above set exists on horizontally laid paper only. The other were issued on vertically and horizontally laid Paper. Of these the ones on horizontally laid paper are much more expensive (about up to 20 x) than vertically ones. Except of the 20 Hwan, where the difference is only 1 to 5.
Mint and used horizontally laid are nearly priced the same.
The 20 Hwan horizantally laid was (also ?) issued in a booklet, containing 5 panes of 6 stamps. I have a single booklet only:
Here the lower two stamps of one of the panes:
I cannot show a complete pane,as I would have to fold the top-page of my booklet for scanning.

10 and 20 Hwan also exist on horizontally laid paper, what are much more expensive than those on vertically laid paper.

Definitives on paper with Wmk.2 issued Jan.21st (15,20,50 Hwan), Feb.22nd (1,2,10 Hwan) and Feb.27th,1957 (5 Hwan).
