OK, you Germany experts out there in philatiland, we all know the airmail stamp Scott calls C4: 40 pf, orange. Fine, got one. But I also have one that is decidedly brown, orange brown at best. Very dark--many, many shades darker than orange. Can't find any mention of it in catalogs I have and unfortunately I don't have a Michel reference catalog, as I should have. I've been going through my specialty albums to update my inventory ( I recently turned 70, so you know why I am doing this), and from time to time I come across a puzzler. Can anyone help with this one, please?

Thanks for your post, Adam ( adamgarfinkle ). I think that there is a strong possibility that your stamp is a colour changeling, which has been sulphuretted. That would account for the orange turning to brown. For details, please have a look in this previous thread: thestampforum.boards.net/thread/5698/causes-stamps-discoloredIf you would like to try to clean the stamp and get back to the orange colour, a short bath in dilute hydrogen peroxide should be able to do that. If your stamp is mint with gum on it, then you may want to try cleaning the surface with a peroxide-moistened cotton bud (Q-Tip). Graham ( radiocruncher ) tried this technique on an unused GB Penny Red, and you can see the results here: thestampforum.boards.net/post/125938/thread

Thanks. Maybe. But changlings often show a non-homogeneous color, and this one I have is completely homogeneous. Anyway the thing is way too cheap to bother restoring. Thanks for the response, however; much appreciated.

Thanks for the response, however; much appreciated. Michel German Reich 2021 in English cat mentions color shades for #210-213, 211 being the orange 40 Pf

Interesting, and thanks (sorry for the long delay in responding). Does it name the shades for #211, or just aver that shades exist? Probably the latter...
