I know I have seen something similar somewhere (I thin on the forum) but having no luck I will post and if need be ( Admin ) please relocate. The latest soaking batch included this- it is the only stamp of Germany I have with this overprint (Octagon within an octagon with a "D" in the center [ which I think might stand for Deustchland } - what does it signify?

( stainlessb) Stan, my ancient (1989) copy of the Michel Germany Specialized identifies this as one of many of the Hitler definitives, locally overprinted in Löbau (Sachsen). They were overprinted from May 28, 1945 until June 26, 1945.

There were many, many varieties of these overprinted defacements. Germany was no longer allowed to use anything that had Hitler or Nazi symbolism, so current stocks were defaced locally until replacement designs could be conceived, executed, and distributed.

Lots of variety in these overprints from 1945/46 - the Michel specialized has loads of info on these all. Not to mention many were privately produced with a variety of bogus overprints, and can be often found.
Lobau local like yours
Set of Bad Gottleuba locals (hard to see the purple I know)
Plus Austria had a couple issues of these overprints as well, here's one example (with a nice overprint shift)

Michel lists only the 6 Pfg. and 12 Pfg. (12 Pfg.unpriced) with a blue-violet handstamped overprint.
The full Hitler-definitives-set is listed with black overprints only. Re-prints exist.

I see soooo many overprints of stamps during the Hilter "era" and I often wonder how many are bogus... this applies to overprints in general!

What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

I am sure once some one tells me the origin I will open the appropriate album and country and find I already have them. I am sure my brain freeze has nothing to do with age.

OK - Open Austria catalog 2009 Scott- 1945 - you will not see a number but a note saying: Germany # 507 - 3pf with overprint "a" was prepared, not issued, but sold to collectors after the definitive Republic Issue had been placed in use. Value in 2009 = $65US MNH.....now it has gone up....look at Scott 2021 (which I do not have) and you will not find it in the Specialized (1945 not there)......... Enjoy !! René

renden René I should have included a scan when first posting but I do not like sharing this image. I had seen the Defterreich in Austria as that was the first country I checked. The problem was that this overprint is different than what Scott is showing in my 1995 catalogue. I do not have any with the overprint that Scott is showing. I will plunk them in with Austria for now. As a partial set there is no value but I like solving mysteries.

Hugh, hdm1950 I think that it was intended to read Oesterreich in Gothic script with an un-umlauted Ö becoming Oe and with the next letter being an elongated s. That said I cannot trace such an overprint although Öfterreich does exist vertically. So, I cannot vouch for their authenticity. Daniel

The stamps resemble the 1945 local issue for Scheibbs (Lower Austria) Type I. Resemble, because the original series is made up by three values only: 6 Pfg.,8 Pfg. and 12 Pfg.
Even the originals were extensively forged. So it is very likely, that the shown stamps are bogus. My information is based on a forty years old catalogue. So it might be useful to have a look at a more recent edition.

Daniel It is all making sense now as are comments about probably being bogus. I was originally misreading the letters. The stretched 's' looking like an 'f' was confusing me.

Hugh, hdm1950 , I'm sure salentin is absolutely right about these stamps. They were overprinted and used in Scheibbs, Lower Austria with 3 different types of Österreich overprint but only 3 values 6, 8 and 12 pfgs. According to Colnect, they were subsequently not approved. So, as suggested, your stamps are bogus.

daniel That strip you show is interesting in that the middle overprint is different than the other 2 with the accent over the 'O'. For sure most of these are either bogus or mass produced for the collector market. My reason for posting was trying to see what country they would be attributed to even as forgeries. Who knows, they may be a rare fake.. . I tend to end up keeping most anything I find if I do not already have it and it is pre 1965. Of late I have been ridding my collection of some Cinderella's but even that seems hard. I am a hoarder at heart I guess.

Because I do not specialize in Austria I decided to throw these questionable overprints on eBay at low starting price in case a collector may find them interesting. In the end someone from England bought them after a few challenging bids from another bidder in Austria. I did not get rich but interesting to see there is a market for what appears to be forgeries. First stamps sold or bought for 2022 so the year begins.
