In 1987 six values of the 1977/1982 castle-defintives were reprinted by Letterset-print,instead of "ordinary" Litho-print or Buchdruck, as before. I don´t know, wether Scott lists the Letterset-prints now; my ancient 2009 edition does not. Michel does list them and the price differences between both prints are not insignificant. I scanned them all,but had a problem to straight them,as I placed the stamp directly on to the scanner and then added a black page. So,please excuse of some not so tidy placed scans.
Upper stamp "Buchdruck" issued April 14th,1977 Lower stamp "Letterset",issued 1987 (no first day)
Left stamp Buchdruck,right stamp Letterset.
The difference is: Buchdruck shows squashed lines and looks a little bit untidy, while Letterset shows straight lines and a clearer image. It may help if you enlarge the picture to spot the difference.
Michel list the Buchdruck for mint € -.30,used € -.30 (minimum value), Letterset € -.30 mint,€ 1.20 used.
As these are quite common stamps, often found in big duplication,it might be worth, having a close look at them.
p.s.: I was somewhat in a hurry to post, because dinner was ready. So I forgot: Both versions were also issued as booklet stamps, either imperforated at top or at bottom. Prices: (Michel 2020)
Buchdruck € -.30 mint or used,Letterset € -.30 mint,€ 1.- used.

Thanks for that, salentin . I'll have to go through the ones I have to see if I have any of the latter printing. I never knew these existed as my 2020 Scott's catalogue (pages) continues to ignore them! Something else to keep me from everything else!

Good grief, the differences between Scott & Michel is astounding for this series. I'm sure everyone who has the Steiner page can agree. This is the extent of this series according to Scott. No wonder I had no idea about the Letterset printings!
I was also wondering why my scanner was scanning crooked! The page was printed crooked, and I just noticed it!
It would appear that I have the Ldr versions vice Bdr., but some look very close, like the 50pf green shown above. It is hard to tell. But in any case, this series needs a major update! The Scott listing just will not do!

Pete, I assume you created a custom page because the original Steiner pages have the two year sets split on different pages.
The challenge when buying by Scott you do not know which variety you will get.

upper: "Buchdruck",issued June 16th,1982 lower: "Letterset",issued 1987 (no first day)
left: Buchdruck right: Letterset
Buchdruck,Michel mint € 4.80,used € 1.- Letterset,Michel mint € 10.-,used € 26.- (!)
Quite astonishing price for used,if you consider, that the print was 60.000.000.
This is the last of the Letterset-prints of this series. To detect them,a good magnifier is needed. A good help may be the cancelling,it must be 1987 or later. All Letterset stamps were issued as coil-stamps only.So no horizontal pairs or strips, or stamps with selvages can exist.

Still having a hard time delineating B & G from Letterset ... maybe I need more examples. But can someone comment on the yellow tagging present on some stamps of both printings. I see some blogs suggest that the loss of the tagging is an artifact but I find it too exacting (too tagged and not tagged).

pss, Welcome to TSF. I also collect German stamps (beginner collector) There is a description in the Michel catalog for the 2 printing methods. Bdr - Crushed edges, somewhat uneven, cloudy application of paint Ldr - Smooth, even application of paint without crushed edges. Unfortunately, I don't have the same stamp printed by the 2 methods and I don't have a scanner with a sufficient resolution to notice the difference. The 80 Pf stamp is printed "Letterset"- Ldr - (indirect typography) The 120 Pf stamp is printed "Buchdruck"- Bdr.- (typo) The difference (quite hard to notice without a sufficient magnification) is the ink that is slightly darker at the edge of the frame and writing lines (letters/numbers) - due to the pressure exerted during printing, the ink is pushed from the center to the edges.

Thanks Gstamps I scan to 1200 psi and still when enlarged not convincing. I do have a microscope which I have not yet used for this issue. That might be what I need to complement my aging eyes. But have you ever looked at this issue under Ultraviolet. Here is my 10 pf scan but only to 300 psi because 1200 psi file is too large.

pss, I don't have a UV lamp yet. In the Michel catalog I did not see any mention of the reaction to UV of the stamps in this series (I don't know German and sometimes I miss some mentions) My pictures are taken with the mobile phone camera. I don't have a scanner, but at 1200 dpi the pictures should look great. Maybe another collector can help you with the scanner settings and the subsequent processing of the picture to fit the forum's requirements.
