All 5-year-plan definitives,issued from 1953 till 1955 were reprinted in 1957. The reprints were printed at 20 millions sets each. They were exported and sold mainly abroad. All,except few "slipped through" stamps bear printed date-cancellations of the year 1956. The cancel were placed central on blocs of four,so that single stamps show a quarter of the cancel. All reprints were printed on ungummed paper.So gummed stamps cannot be reprints. The paper of the reprints is smoother than that of the originals.(best seen on the backside)
Of the first set (Scott no.155-171),printed by Litho(graphy) the designs of originals and reprints differ in many details. Wether these are minor,as Scott claims,is a question of opinion.
As I am myself a "novice" DDR-collector and my collection,that I had bought recently,did not contain the reprints,I found out,that they are not so easy to find. They are not attractive for stamp-dealers,because of theirs very low cat.-values and because they can so easily be confused with the originals.
During my attempt to scan the 1953 series,I found that I miss one of the reprints,but will nevertheless show what I have. Talking about cat.-values,Michel lists the 1953 reprints at € 3.- for the set. I have no actual catalogue,what values the originals in used,but in an older issue,the originals were priced used € 110.-,versus € 3.- for the reprints. As no price for originals in c.t.o. was listed,I think they were not sold as such.

On all originals the A of DEMOKRATISCHE is placed under between the HE of DEUTSCHE while it is further to the right under the E on all reprints. There are many differences in the design as well. On this stamp,the reprint 1 Pfennig value,the twig and leaves left to the 5 are much less shaded and appear to be nearly white.

However, I did notice that Michel does not always provide a set price every year. For example, in my 2005, there is no CTO set price for originals even though all the individual CTO originals are priced. Since the individual CTO prices for the 1953 originals are listed, I will assume that the omission of the set price was simply an editorial oversight.In my 2015 Michel Specialized, the set prices are listed as: €30 for original, genuine postally used €17 for original, CTO €3 for reprint (1957), CTO [EDIT: see 2 posts below for corrected catalog price quote. I don´t have the 2005 and the 2015 Michel, but in mine (2002/3) the 1953 litho-set (Mi.nos.362-379,Scott nos.122-36) shows no prices for c.t.o. originals, but for the reprints only.
However the 1953 typo-set (Mi.nos.405-422,Scott nos.187-204) is listed with five columns as: mint,hinged, mint n.h., c.t.o., postally used, and reprints c.t.o.
The Michel Junior 2020 list nos.362-379 as mint,n.h., c.t.o. and reprints c.t.o. However the prices seem to be strange to me: 1.) mint,n.h. € 150.-,what seems O.K. 2.) c.t.o. € 110.-,what looks very high to me,but is the same price as in the 2000/2003 edition for postally used ! 3.) reprints c.t.o. € 3.-,what seems to be O.K.again
Is it possible,that you confused the sets ? I ask,because the € 17.-,you mentioned for c.t.o.,match exactly the price in 2020 Junior for the Mi.nos.405-422 set and those for postally used in Michel 2002/2003 are quite close with € 30.- versus € 25.-. (405-422 is not listsed as postally used in the Junior-cat.)

You are correct. When I scrolled back to quote the prices, I jumped to the wrong set, so gave the wrong catalog price quote. Sorry, getting old. However, the set prices for original CTO are listed, even in the 2005. From the 2015 Michel #362-379: €130 for original, genuine postally used €110 for original, CTO €3 for reprint (1957), CTO  |

When scanning for this thread,I found out,that I have no reprint of the 60 Pfg.-stamp.
Michel describes the difference,that on the reprints the rail of the ship does not touch the upper frame of the picture.
However the easy way is again the position of the "A" of DEMOKRATISCHE under the "HE" of DEUTSCHE on originals, while mid under the "E" on reprints.

reprints.Difficult to see,when obscured by a cancel.
