What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

No stamps on these items but still of interest in the philatelic world. These items are of Great Britain origin and made their way to Canada via a Canadian service man in the Royal 1st Canadian Division who saw action in Italy in World War II. They do not appear to be that rare or of great value but I guess I will keep them. They are another recovery from the collection I am sorting for a friend. The envelope contained one letter from the 24th of May, 1944 from (somewhere in Italy). These cards were designed to send quick information home and could clear censors fast.

These items and censor numbers are quite popular with Canadian Military postal history collectors.

These items were issued to soldiers etc serving overseas.”On active service “ or O.A.S. Guaranteed free postage.
The cards with multi choice items were intended as last minute messages for use in the field when time did not allow longer messages. Millions of these cards were issued in WW1 and I will show some examples later when I access my office again. Very similar cards like the one above , were produced again for WW2.
Longer letters when time allowed could be sent in the green envelope. They were self censored and “signed on my honour” ( hence they are called Honour Envelopes)
The RAF envelopes printed in pale blue , and the Royal Navy in black are somewhat less common.

No stamps on these items but still of interest in the philatelic world. No stamps were required on soldier’s mailing whilst On Active Service overseas. interesting that both have the same censor handstamp used in May and July 1944 so that would have been passed censored by the sender’s unit for onward mailing.

Actually the small card was sent in July of 1943 about the time the 1st Canadian Division would have taken part in Operation Husky in Sicily and the letters envelope was sent in late May 25, 1944 which was just days before a Canadian unit saw action at Monte Cassion. I was aware that no stamps were required while on Active Service.

I found this 1944 Allied Forces Christmas greeting sent by the same service man to his friend. I thought it was a newer copy but the only other one I found looks the same. The other one lists it as a telegram so maybe this is how they printed out. I think I will keep it with the other 2 items.

These were used mainly in the Mediterranean theatre of war , 1940s. Called an AIRGRAPH. The greetings message was photoed on a roll of film along with hundreds of similar messages . Flown by RAF. To the UK, the film was processed and enlarged prints were put in window envelopes so that the address was shown ,made for delivery on the final stage to the family by the regular mail service.

Thanks Alex. That explains the unusual appearance. It is nice that all 3 pieces shown are from the same man and his friend back in Canada kept them. There was also a 6 page letter in the envelope describing daily social life in Italy. Beer and wine are mentioned.
