But I did sign the enlargement on the wall in SG in February right beside where Chris wrote “TSF”, with “Vikingeck”. 😎😎😎 Very cool. I have actually emailed Stanley Gibbons, who will be at our very own CAPEX 2022 in Toronto anyway, to ask them if there were plans to bring it over for us Canucks/American owners on the other side of the pond who will be attending. The very nice lady responded quickly to say she didn't think so but would get the question out there to them and see. That would be AWESOME. If not, it'll just have to wait till I drag my husband over to England (I lived there from 74 to 78) and I'll go see it then. The stamp is no longer on display. The last day of public viewing was on the last day of the recent International Stamp exhibition in London. (Feb 26th).

Thanks for letting us know that, Michael ( Londonbus1), but I am sorry to hear it. I thought that perhaps the stamp would be on display on a more-or-less permanent basis. It's too bad, as I was going to make a post saying that I thought it was one of the benefits of the SG ownership, i.e. that the stamp would be available for viewing on a regular basis now. Oh, well. Just an additional point: I have taken the thread that I started back in March about a webinar on the history of the British Guiana 1c Black on Magenta, and I have merged those posts into this thread, as I think that the story of this unique stamp should be kept together as much as possible on TSF. If you haven't already seen a bit about the history, please look back in this thread now to find some highlights from that presentation.

Inspired by the ongoing conversation about this famous stamp, I have decided to listen to an audiobook on the subject, namely: James Barron, The One-Cent Magenta, published in 2017 by Algonquin Books. Audiobook published by High Bridge, a Division of Recorded Books. Cover design by Angeline Ucci.

Yes, you got me there, Alex ( vikingeck)! I have opted for the audiobook so that I can listen to the story while sorting through all the piles of stuff that have accumulated on my stamp desk. It's a bit of a time-saving measure for me. I listen to a fair number of audiobooks, actually.

I've read the above book as well and it was both fascinating AND entertaining, like the one guy who willed the house to his ex wife... which was very nice of him since it was HER house, LOL!
But Alex, like you, over the past two years of the pandemic I began to go walking when all my other physical activities were cancelled (SOCCER!), and audiobooks have been my go-to. I've also found as I age that I simply don't enjoy *reading* non-fiction books, but do certainly enjoy them in audio format, oddly enough.

"The stamp is no longer on display. The last day of public viewing was on the last day of the recent International Stamp exhibition in London. (Feb 26th)." Like someone else in the group I also read that the whole point behind SG buying it was PRECISELY so they could put it on display for everyone to see, which is also why they had that Very Expensive Nifty Indestructible Display Case created, was it not? Does anyone else have info? Could it have been taken down for travel of some sort?

There are many reasons not to keep it on display - security, preservation, etc. I assume it was there for marketing purposes.

The plan was always to take it down when the Exhibition ended. I was there a few days later and they told me the details then. "There is no plan to show it again here", she said. No doubt it will be on display at other venues during events. Londonbus1

A few eyebrows have been raised over this venture concerning what the final outcome will be, for both the rarest stamp in the world and the companies involved. This is what #philately had to say on the situation.
I suppose that only time will tell as to what the eventual outcome will be, what's your perception ?

The decision to create "partial share ownership" was a truly daft idea, and appears to have fallen completely flat (there is a very good thread in another stamp forum about the whole sorry saga of Gibbons and this misadventure with their acquisition of the 1c Magenta)
The smarter thing if they wanted to click into the "hip" market and raise money would have been to create certified Non-Fungible Token versions of the stamp. Gibbons own the original, they could easily make a digital version of the stamp in a run of X thousant that could then be bought by the punters who think NFTs are the next big thing. But that was not the route they went, and now they have a big magenta albatross around their necks.
Gibbons in its current form is living on borrowed time, and if it is still around by 2025 I will be more than a little surprised.

Thanks for your post, Alex ( vikingeck). I think it would be a good idea to merge these posts into the existing thread, but I am unable to do that using my phone. Steve ( Admin) or LB1 ( Londonbus1), can one of you help with this?

I wonder how many shares have been sold. They are currently having a sale on the shares - now only $125.56 each.

I wonder how many shares have been sold. They are currently having a sale on the shares - now only $125.56 each. That's about £100, the original and current UK price. This offering ends May 1st. From 80,000 pieces, they have sold 65.3%, that equates to £5,224,000. That's most of their money back. Add in merchandise and possible future offerings and SG are set to recover their entire outlay. If they continue to display the stamp, from time to time, it can only be a good thing for stamp collecting. Where did you find the information on % sold? I can only find that there are 1649 collectors showpiece.com/1c-magenta. At 65% sold some individuals must be buying a quantity of shares.

Hi Mr. H, If you click on the link in the very first post, you'll come to the 'showpiece' page. Then click on the 'Buy Pieces' button under the 1c Magenta and all is revealed. So, yes, many buyers would have purchased multiple pieces. Presumably, seeing it as a good investment. Stanley Gibbons will be setting up a trading platform soon. All the best, Daniel

I'm sorry daniel but the 65% contains 49% that Stanley Gibbons retained/bought soon after the opening offer expired as I reported on a previous post. They have therefore only sold around 16%. It hasn't helped in that a few months back they added this to the FAQs, indicating the sale might infringe USA financial rules. It will be interesting to see what happens when the marketplace for the stamp starts this month.
The share price also hit an all time low of 1.72 pence (2½ cents) this week so things are not looking very good at the moment for Stanley Gibbons. As I've said before, I wish they would stick with selling stamps and publications.

The initial offering closed with 34.7% remaining to be sold. Doesn't look like it really generated much interest since it took 6 months to sell the 16.3%. It would be interesting to see a graph on the sales (were the sales mostly front end or evenly spread out).

Sales peaked when they spent a lot of money on advertising shortly after the initial offer, other than that it has sadly been a downward trend.
I hoped they would learn and recover from their previous escapades of bad acquisitions, the internet flop "marketplace" and their Guernsey based investment guaranteed sales but no they haven't learnt anything.
All down to bad management.

Sadly, the share price is now down to 1.4 pence and the marketplace for trading of the magenta pieces, promised by May 2022, hasn't materialised.

I can see it as a novelty but glad it has not encouraged more of this activity. Maybe I can just say I own a fraction of all the stamps in the National Postal Museum as a citizen of the US.
