Moderator Note: This thread was created using Robert's ( WERT) post in the NZ Pictorials thread. Thanks to Dave ( DK) for suggesting it, as NZ Life Insurance stamps should certainly be a worthy subject in their own right. New Zealand Life Insurance StampsGot a big box of stamps. Never really looked through it.... Here is one of many examples. An OY3 {1891} New Zealand life insurance stamp..{I think} Got lots more....

Perhaps you could confirm its perforation for us. if p11 then it is SG L15An 1898 date would suggest a p11 but it looks a little like p10 which is from 1893. The really good one of these to get is the exact same stamp - 2d brown p11 - but with ' VR' omitted. Then you can multiply its value by about x45 That one is SG L21 Dave PS Perhaps it is time to start a thread on the 'Life Insurance' or 'Lighthouse' issues !!

The New Zealand Government Life Insurance Department was opened in 1869 and started issuing its own stamps in 1891. All the designs have featured lighthouses. The dies were engraved by A.E.Cousins and plates made at the Government Printing Office, Wellington. The following values were issued: ½d, 1d, 2d, 3d, 6d and 1/- (1s). The first issue was perf 12 x 11½ and was issued on rather poor quality paper in which the watermark has a 4mm gap between the NZ and star. This paper was also used for the second side-face issue and is often referred to as the insurance paper. There was only one printing of the 3d, 6d and 1/- values, but several printings of the other values on paper with 7mm between the NZ and star and perforated 10, 11 and 11 x 10. In 1902-1903 they appeared on a paper with watermark sideways and perf 11. In 1905 (2d) and 1906 (1d) new plates were produced in which the VR was omitted. The 2d is rare (and therefore expensive). The stamps were withdrawn in January 1907 and replaced by the ordinary postage stamps overprinted Official. Wmk.43 is the 'single' NZ & Star watermark as described by SG - In CP catalogs it is W7 In Scott it is Wmk. 61 I believe. I am not sure what other catalogs list it as, if you use other ones. I trust this makes sense. Dave

Nice one guys.
A few 'niggly' gaps to fill for a couple of you in those sets.
NB Those two 15c ones of yours Pete, are incorrectly labelled as "Moeraki Point" - they are in fact "Dog Island".

I thought perhaps the catalogues had mis-lead me. But I guess copy and paste did me in!
Thanks DK - next iteration will be correct!

Here is one of the stamps created to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the first NZ stamp, which shows the life insurance stamp.
