Trade cards, also known as chromos in Europe, were used to advertise products and were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century. Union Colonial, also known as Unicol,a chocolate producer in Belgium, issued a series of cards showing postal workers of various countries. There were 86 cards in the set, each measuring 5cm by 7cm.The reverse showed a map of the country or region shown on the card. The cards also displayed a flag--not always correct--and a copy of an early postage stamp. Shown here are cards showing postal workers from France and some French colonies.

"Cromos", as we call them, were also very popular here, up to the 1980s. Chocolate cromos from early XXth century are very collectable and, often, comand high prices. I've a few.

cursusLike chocolate,I find these cromos very addictive....I have managed to acquire 66 of the 86 cards in this series and am trying to find the missing cards.Prices seem to vary greatly but as you say, some of the earlier items are quite expensive.

Stamps and postal workers also appeared on other cards issued by other chocolate producers.A few examples here from Chocolat Carpentier and Chocolat Poulain. Chocolaterie d,Aiguebelle. This company was started by the monks at the monastery at Aiguebelle in 1868.
