I mentioned in another post that I recently purchased my first Penny Black. What started out innocently has now become an obsession (well almost). Once I began reading about the Line Engraved issues I was hooked. Handling these treasures as stewards, provides us the opportunity of touching historical artifacts manufactured and used during the formative years of what became the Universal Postal Union. This is similar to my other hobby 18th and 19th century woodworking tools. Holding them in the hand one can reflect, perhaps fantasize, on the time and circumstance the tool or stamp was to be used for, perhaps the stamp was affixed to a love letter or business communication or was this tool used to make a chair or a jewelry chest. In the vein of humanity and as tactile objects, both allowed the expansion of communication and progress in their own way.
Here is my first foray into the Line Engraved issues. I believe I'll find a better way to arrange and display them as time goes by, but for now they live safely on a Vario page. As I mentioned earlier the collection is based around my initials RL but I'm also including other letters as well if the stamp is interesting. Rob

I’m not sure without a larger image, but I venture your second Black has a good chance of being plate 10
O flaw and. R centred high. L centred low …………..look for a vertical mark in the NW square which I can’t see on the scan

The doubling of the base line and the vertical line in the NW star are both confirmed in Nissen’s plating book as indicative features of RL plate 10

Do you have a copy of Nissen's book? I've been trying to get one for awhile now. I bought a DVD version that I tossed in the wastebasket after 30 seconds. I lost 3 auction attempts for the Stanley Gibbons reprint so far on eBay. I wasn't willing to go over $250 including shipping and so far that hasn't been enough to win. Rob
