Does anyone outside the U.K. have experience making their own FDCs with new Royal Mail issues? I ask because I'm interested in branching out to some other countries, and Great Britain seems like a good place to start. In the U.S., as I'm sure many of you know, USPS allows collectors to send in their own self-addressed covers with new issues affixed to the central Stamp Fulfillment Services office, which will apply a first-day postmark and send the covers back through the mail free of additional charge. It's a nice service that's brought me lots of fun in recent years, when a cover I sent out weeks earlier shows up in my mailbox with a nice new first-day postmark.
My question is... Will Royal Mail do the same thing for a philatelist overseas? I see they have detailed instructions for handstamp postmarks on the Royal Mail site that seem similar to USPS' procedure, but I assume those are meant for U.K. residents. If I send a cover to them with a new U.K. issue representing sufficient postage for an international letter, will it make its way back to me in the U.S. with the first-day postmark? Has anyone tried this? Or am I dreaming of something impossible?
Edited to add: P.S. apologies if this post is in the wrong part of the forum, I'm still learning the ropes!

What I collect: My focus is on Wild Mammals on maximum cards. Occasionally, I get or create maximum cards with other animals, or any other topic.

I have done it with maxicards, and I had to put a UK address on the back of each maxicard! EVEN IF they were NOT supposed to be mailed back individually, but all in one envelope. Royal Mail cares. Ask Ian Billings for info, even if he is not servicing FDCs anymore. www.norphil.co.uk/

Thanks dorincard! I inquired with the Royal Mail, who confirmed they can provide this service as long as the items arrive with them within 28 days of the issue date. I'm going to do a little more research and then give this a shot. Hopefully I'll be able to update this thread with my results in a few weeks!
