I started this thread back in January with a post about the Ruth Asawa stamps from 2020 (Scott 5504-5513), including a very simple FDC I made at the time of their issuing. I recently made another cover for Asawa, using the pictorial postmark offered last month to memorialize the 80th anniversary of Executive Order 9066, the (in my opinion) very shameful wartime order that imprisoned tens of thousands of innocent Japanese-Americans in the 1940s solely because of their ethnic background. One of the people detained was a young Asawa, who was sent with her family to a “relocation center” at age 16. When she got out after the war, she pursued a career as a highly original sculptor, eventually leading to her work being celebrated in major museums and on these stamps. I made the cover using a quotation of Asawa’s that I like, along with my own attempt to evoke her wire sculptures.

I haven’t posted much recently in this thread, but I’ve continued adding slowly but surely to my miniature modern art museum (and enjoying reading everyone else’s contributions to the thread!) Here’s a recently assembled hall of colorful French art stamps, plus one Danish one, listed with their dates of issue. I put these together because I like how they complement each other visually, more than anything else. Picasso (1998), Paul Signac (2003), Rothko (2016), Seurat (1969) Bjørn Wiinblad (1986), Joan Miro (1974), Roger Excoffon (1977) Jean Messagier (1984), Alberto Magnelli (1986), Pierre Soulages (1986) …Edited to acknowledge that my Miro is upside-down in this image. I’m not going to re-scan it right now, but trust me that it looks even better right-side-up!

A couple more recent additions to my small "modern art museum" on stamps... One features a 1969 image from Gerhard Richter’s long series of eerie, hyperrealistic Seestück ( Seascape) paintings. The stamp is a 145-cent German issue from 2013. In my corner of the world, Richter’s best-known work may be his Kerze ( Candle) paintings, one of which appears on the cover of the art-rock band Sonic Youth’s brilliant 1988 double album Daydream Nation. But now I’m rambling on about my other interests… Here's a recently acquired official FDC for this stamp (or rather, the slightly larger version that was issued alongside the smaller one I posted last year).

Several of us have posted on TSF about stamps featuring the work of the great abstract modernist Josef Albers. Here's his German stamp from 1993 again, along with one from 2019 commemorating the centenary of the Bauhaus, where Albers taught. (It looks like the first stamp must have been placed upside down when it was mailed 30 years ago.) Looking back over this thread recently, I realized that I started it just over one year ago. I've learned a lot about modern art on stamps outside the U.S., and found more than a few inspirations for my wish list and, in some lucky cases, my collection. What a great thread! Thanks everyone for all the beautiful and interesting stamps you've shared here!

One of my recent eBay purchases came in the below cover. It has a spray-on postmark from Orlando, Florida and a strip of 4 of the the Learning never ends stamp issued in 1980, Sc. no. 1833. I see above, the German stamp with this piece and I know this US stamp has been posted previously but I quite liked that the sender/seller sent the item with the strip of 4 of this particular stamp.

Here's a lovely set of the four stamps issued by the UK in 1975 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of J.M.W. Turner, the before-his-time English romantic whose turbulent sea scenes did so much to anticipate the abstract movements of the centuries that followed. I got these nice additions to my collection in a trade with philatelia, for whose generosity I am very grateful! Thanks Theresa!
