Got an email 5 minutes ago about the new Scott subscription service.
Now you have to subscribe to get the online catalog, and it's $99/year/book. And they're promising if you stay subscribed you'll get "annual updates."
So, you used to pay $99 to buy a volume of the catalog and you're able to view it forever (well, for as long as scottoline.com is up). Now you pay $99 and you lose access after a year if you don't renew.
And they're claiming they added more features we asked for such as better search, hi-res images, and annual updates.
And there is NO free trial of any kind. You need to give them $99 and then you have to cancel within 5 days to get a full refund.
SO MANY things wrong with this:
1. There should be a 15 day free trial that doesn't need a credit card 2. It should not cost you $99/book/year. If you want access to the who catalog that's $600 a year 3. If I am subscribed, I should not get "annual updates." I should get weekly, or at a bare minimum, monthly updates with new stamps added with new values.
God, I wish Amos would become irrelevant to US collectors already.

I own 2 digital catalogues with SCOTT and they are mine forever - So the new rules do not apply to previously bought catalogues, just future ones.
Thought I would add this info - René

I should have mentioned that.
All old purchases are still available (for now).
But going forward, if you want to buy a Scott digital catalog, you can't. You can only subscribe.
I'm not sure who's steering the ship there, but they're obviously clueless when it comes to a digital offering.
The place just made me a ChirokMD customer for life.
ALSO...
I used to be able to buy individual countries on scottonline.com. Now you have to subscribe to a whole volume now.

I wanted to compare this to other online offerings. So, I went to look at what MICHEL has to offer: www.briefmarken.de/michelshop/en/michel-onlineMICHEL's offering is a little different, because it's a database. So, to get hi-res images and access to the whole world, that will cost you 18,22€, which $20.03 a month, or $240.36 a year. This also gives you the ability to take notes and store them in your version of the catalog. Meanwhile, Scott is charging you $594/year for a similar set of features. And if you don't care about hi-res images, MICHEL is available for 13,55€ a month which is $14.93 a month or $179.16 a year. And with Scott, you can't just get a month, you need to pay for a whole year. The least they could have done is added a tool to catalog your collection, and let you generate a list to submit to your insurance company. This Scott offering is SO overpriced.

As I have said on other online forums, this is absolutely myopic of Scott. Why would I pay US$550/year for Scott when I can pay US$150/year for Yvert's full online catalogue or about US$200/year for the full Michel standard.
I'd pay US$200/year for the full Scott line (including Classic Specialized and US Specialized, which are currerntly extra add-ons in addition to the US$550/year for the standard six volumes - so for the entire Scott line you are looking at more like US$750/year!!!!) Sorry no way would I pay US$750/year for access to catalogues that in many areas are inferior to other publisher's offerings.
This US$550-750/year pricepoint will simply move more newer/intermediate collectors to online alternatives such as Colnect and Stampworld. Tech savvy but cash-poor collectors just will not be able to afford access to Scott at that price point.

I purchased a full set of digital Scott catalogues at the end of 2020 (2021 editions, including classic Specialized) so I am at least good for several more years before needing to consider updating at least the Classic Specialized. Hopefully by then Scott will learn some marketing 101 and re-evaluate its price structure compared to the similar offerings Michel and Yvert have but which charge US$400-450 per year less (and for what are in my opinion in many ways better worldwide catalogues, especially Michel).

They thanked me for pointing out a number of problems, but never did anything with it.Their awful iOS app was just an encrypted PDF reader. What they need to do they refuse to do. They need a database, not a catalog. I don’t want to flip through pages. I want to go in and tell the site to show me all Scott Major numbers that came out in 2011with pictures and other details such as perforation and die-cut information. And I want an app for my phone and tablet with full offline access. Instead they’re offering me a better search experience and more stamp pictures, neither of which I need. Scott needs to do what Colnect does.

If StampManage or EZStamp ran on Mac or Linux, I would buy that and use it instead of a Scott Cataog.

I would not count on it anytime soon. They have not done well with their digital offerings such as their stamp inventory program and then later selling PDFs that were duplicated and being sold. They also sell countries catalogs alphabetically rather than grouping in more logical ways.
As the saying goes, the amosadvantage website is slow as molasses. The search is crude.
I suspect they do not view Michel as a key competitor since they believe most of their customers do not use Michel. Most dealers sell using Scott. I am sure their focus is to replace the drop in printed sales with digital sales - revenue neutral at worst. This shows how much of the selling price is not the printed book itself.
I do not see a need for new catalogs every year or even 5 years (my set is 2016/2017). I do not collect new issues and the values really do not change much. If I wanted a new set I would get a 2 or 3 year old set for a substantial price reduction of the every increasing cost new ones.
Colnect is my go to source for identification and this is what I need a catalog to do. Printed catalogs are not 100% illustrated. I have found very few errors on Colnect.
At some point, I am going to pull pages and scan them.

My local library buys a complete new set of Scott catalogs almost every year. So, I just photo pages I am interested in with my iphone and put them in a folder on my computer. I expect other libraries are similar.
I mostly use an old catalogue or Colnect for identification. It works for me.
I also found that Scott separated their US by grade into a small paperback in 2022. I bought one. It was around $30.

I think Scott could help themselves and the US hobby better if they gave up on the ridiculous notion that their data is somehow worth 750 dollars a year. They should find a way to customize their data for customers and sell them convenience and accuracy while licensing their numbering system to more 3rd parties. Grow the hobby. Sell a million $1 widgets instead of relying on small numbers of collectors to pay exorbitant prices.

I think Scott vastly overestimates just how important they are.

They should find a way to customize their data for customers and sell them convenience and accuracy while licensing their numbering system to more 3rd parties. Grow the hobby. Sell a million $1 widgets instead of relying on small numbers of collectors to pay exorbitant prices. From previous communications from Scott, I have learned 2 things: 1. Scott is super-paranoid about piracy. At one point they had a full-time guy who did nothing but report eBay auctions for selling illegal copies of the Scott DVDs 2. Scott won't do anything that will annoy their advertisers or licensees. They won't make an online inventory system, because they license their numbers to StampManage and EZStamp. 3. Their in-house system for generating the catalog is super-primitive. As fas as I know, they're still manually editing the catalog in Adobe FrameMaker. So, the only online offering they're capable of doing is something they can suck out FrameMaker and dump into another tool. I would love to check out their new catalog subscription, just to see the UI. But I guarantee you that it will just be a virtual book where you can turn the pages. I really don't want to give them $100 and then have them refund it. My other issue is, I don't use one catalog for all my collecting. I use Scott for US. I use MICHEL for Ukraine, and I use Stanley Gibbons for Ireland. And those are the only 3 countries I collect. In 2022, I should be able to buy just the countries I need and download them as PDFS, look them up in a database, or order them as print-on-demand book.

You know there are quite a few programs out there that will let you catalog items. They'll even let you make custom templates. But the one thing you can't do with them is use Scott catalog numbers.

I had looked at exporting information from Colnect and seemed like the catalog numbers were all in the same field.
It would be great if you could create sell, trade, want lists on computer from a spreadsheet and then upload but my guess it could be a mess if someone did not get the fields right (invalid data).

I just checked Stamp Mate on my iPad, only to discover I had downloaded it at some point, but deleted it. I must not have liked how everything was displayed. I'll stick with my pdf's and spreadsheets.

I just got an email from the Stamp Auction Network, and it seems that they are following Scott's example. Moving forward it is going to cost $49.95 per year to belong, and they imply that the rate will go up at some point in the future, when they say, "So lock in now...."

You may be right, Peter ( brightonpete). In fairness, I did re-read the email in more detail, and the Stamp Auction Network (SAN) is offering other lower cost options, particularly for those who bid less frequently. Although I am interested in SAN, I don't see myself as wanting to pay a regular subscription fee just for the privilege of making a bid.

I decided to go and take a look at what Scott's new offering actually looks like, and man, is it disappointing. From the initial information in this thread, I had assumed they had finally gone to a database model. Nope. Bad on me for associating "digital subscription" with what that means for the other catalog publishers. This is still just a digital presentation of a traditional catalog. Screenshots, for those who might be interested: I signed up for the Classic Specialized. This is the initial screen I get. This is what it looks like within the Germany section. There are arrows at left and right to flip pages, an a navigation bar at bottom. There's a bar at the top to open a small index, a search window, and settings. Overall though, not really different from their older digital offerings -- just a digital presentation of the same old catalog. The only other digital catalog I subscribe to is Michel's, which has been discussed previously in this thread. For those who aren't aware here's what a catalog in a database form looks like, here's a screenshot. Worldwide and searchable across a variety of criteria. The individual listings then look like this: One day, Scott, one day.

PostmasterGS, one day I'll also have all my stamps IDed, sorted, and displayed in my albums. One day... Regarding SAN, there was a lot of confusion/discussion elsewhere on their membership plans. Lost in all that, is the fact that SAN offers free membership to occasional bidders. This option was always stated from day one, just not very clearly and not obvious how to get the free membership. If you are already a member, it is super easy. Just click on the free membership button, and they will email you confirmation. The free membership is for one year, and currently renewable for free. In other words, unless you are bidding on several lots from several different auctions every month, there's really no difference other than one click to get to the membership page and then another click on the free membership button. I've been a bidding member on SAN for roughly 10 years, and never paid any membership fees. It's unfortunate that an overly complicated/confusing marketing presentation got everyone all worked up & upset. It pays to be an unrelenting cheapskate -- you don't stop until you find a way to get things for free, or at least no more than 1¢. k
