There I was just plodding through a slew of stamps I purchased from an estate sale, and I come across a stamp from Mauritius. I wasn't even aware of a country called Mauritius. I did a little digging and incorrectly identified the stamp. A bit later I went back and noticed it said Post Office on the side. When I looked this one up I found the only stamp that matched. It was worth $1,250,000 so said the stamp catalog. Well, I am about 99.999% sure this is a fake, but in reading up on the stamp and known fakes I could not identify any tale tale markings. So off to the expertiser it went. I am trying to decide where to spend my newfound wealth. I figure after the expertising fee I will be able to sell it at a small loss! Stay tuned.

Before spending your "wealth" some members of this forum are as "expert" as you will find and pay big money, and still be without reassurance. A TIP: scan your beauty and put it up here on TSF and you will be surprised by some responses and not have to wait for an "expert" and their bill René

pdenboer you might find these threads useful, here for Reprints and Forgeries and here for genuine stamps. I do hope your stamp is genuine and that you don't forget your fiends on the forum. Yes, even if you have only been here 5 minutes Your Friend on the Forum, Daniel

Your "stamp" is likely a photo- or lithoprinted faksimily or just a cut-out from some paper, catalogue, album etc. The real stamps were engraved and should look like:
The shown stamp is a worn copy of the second issue of Mauritius. The difference is with the inscription only: first issue POST OFFICE second issue POST PAID

Two Comments if I may . 1. The orange red Penny Mauritius , sister stamp to the world famous Classic " Blue Mauritius " was engraved on a copper plate , which I have seen on display at an international exhibition. The background is made up of diagonal and perpendicular lines, and the shading pf the hair, crown and on the neck are clear engraved lines . None of these lines are visible in this example . 2. while it is not impossible for one to turn up Stanley Gibbons notes " It is generally agreed that 15 examples of the penny have survived, two of which are unused" One of these is worth £1300000 Guess which ?
