To collect Bhutan for many sounds as bad and ridiculous,as collecting "Dunes". However other than the arabian and african and few others mass-producers of stamps, Bhutan also issues many stamps with motives of his/her rich cultural heritage, what is still very much alive. However Bhutan was also one of the early countries to issue "extra-ordinary" stamps. Scorned by some, but now copied by "serious" postal services, like Austria or Switzerland, just to name this two.
My collection is far from being complete. And I do not attempt completion. There are many issues I will not take into my collection, because I really dislike them. Although Bhutan issued the first postage stamps only in 1962 - there are fiscals from 1955 -, it is by non means a cheap country to collect.Obviously there is a good demand for many stamps.
Scott made a big mess of cataloging Bhutan,so I will show Michel-numbering only.
For a start,the fiscals issued 1955,Michel 1-4:
Blue = 1/4 Rupee carmine = 1/2 Rupee green = 1 Rupee orange = 5 Rupees
I would not "touch" them used.
The currency of Bhutan is the Ngultrum, subdived into 100 Chetrum. The Ngultrum is pegged to the Indian Rupee 1:1.
The 1/4 Rupee stamp were handstamped/revalued in Oct 1962, with 10 NP. and 25 N.P.,Mi.nos. I & II. Mint,rare,genuinely used,yet to be found.

I do not collect Bhutan either, but I have been aware of the country now as I sell stamps. And I always wonder if I should start collecting countries that other write interesting stories about, but no, I already collect to much. But I like to se and hear what others collect.

They even issued circular stamps you could play on a turntable…..I think they did the local National anthem.
The set is ridiculous and ridiculously expensive .
I have had spacemen 3D images , and embossed plastic portraits of Churchill, Gandhi, and JFK in the past, but all have moved on to others more interested in that than I .

Bhutan samples Several of these appear to be postally used. The brown dzong stamp on the middle left is part of a set of actual definitives.
I collect Bhutan but limit the collection to stamps that depict Bhutanese themes.
The early gimmick stamps raised money to build an airport in Paro, which made tourism possible.
I considered using a DVD stamp to send a package out of Bhutan but realized that it would likely vanish in the Indian postal service.

So Werner salentin , that’s a curious pairing of subjects . Is shooting arrows at the postal runner a National Sport in Bhutan ?😀😀😀😀 An ironic pairing for Carmen seegod1 I think 😎

Yes,the Bhutanese are funny people ! But at least the do not post decades-old images of the king all over their stamps. What is a relief !
The second part-scan of the first defintives:
The 15 Ch. stamp is a mystery to me: I thought it showed Ugyen Wangchuck, the first king of Bhutan (Druck Gyalpo = Dragon King) and founder of the ruling Wangchuck-Dynasty. However the shown date 1867 - 1902 does irritate me,as Ugyen Wangchuck lived 1862 - 1926.

After I had made the above post,I remembered a slightly faulty overprint in a duplicate set:
broken 0 in 50 and an additional point above the I of Innsbruck.

The early stamps are not engraved, but printed by half-tone photo-gravure. (I hope this is the right english term for the german "Rastertiefdruck")
Tokyo Olympics 1964 Issued Oct.10th,1964. Exist also perforated 14.5; cat.-value about a third of imperforated. Mi.31-7A perf.,31-7B imperf.

Mi.40-2A (perf.),40-2B (imp.)
"Issued in memory of those who died in service of their country"
To me a rather strange issue, showing different flags at half-mast. Interesting the choice of countries featured and those who are not. Michel lists the imperforated set about seven times as expensive,as the perforated one. Issued Nov.22nd,1964.
