The first of the many sets I do not own,but am looking for: In 1965,no exact date(s) are known,5 of the previous stamps were overprinted, mainly to serve on domestic mail.
Mi.64 5 Ch. on 2 Nu World Refugee Year (Mi.13) Mi.65 10 Ch. on 70 Ch. Dancers (Mi.27) Mi.66 10 Ch. on 2 Nu Dancers (Mi.30) Mi.67 15 Ch. on 1.30 Nu first series Yak (Mi.11) Mi.68 25 Ch. on 1.30 Nu Dancers (Mi.29)

(part II of 2) Set exists also imperforated, valued 2.5 times the perforated version. Usually I take one version only into my collection. But of this set I have imperf. stamps with adherent margins.
Here a corner-stamp. I took this imperforated set, because each of the 12 stamps has a differnt coloured selvage. The colours are mostly not the ones used for the background of the stamps

The first two stamps of the defintive-series "Monasteries of Bhutan" Issued May 2nd,1966. All these stamps have a low face-value,in the range of 1-10 Cents US,needed for ordinary postal use. However all have a rather high cat.-value,compared to their face-values. We are not talking about big money, but the two shown here are listed by Michel with € 10.- mint and € 8.- for used. Trade offers them somewhat cheaper, but not by much.

The first three values of the set commemorating the 40th anniversary of King Jigme Wangchuck´s (1905-1952) accession to the throne in 1926. (Mi.86-94)
The stamps show gold-coins,issued for the occasion. Three more (green) stamps, showing the backsides of the coins, were not issued, but were later issued overprinted. Michel claims, that the king shown is Jigme Singye Wangchuck. But that cannot be as he only became king in 1972. Michel also confuses cm with mm: the diameters of the stamps are 39,50 and 64 mm ! The stamps were issued without gum. They were anyway not meant to be used as postage.

Jeffs: I always thought they were self-adhesive.I put together my Bhutan stamps into a collection only recently. Many of the "exotic"issues were in boxes for several decades, because I did not have a good idea, how to place them in an album or stock-book. Now that problem solved,I had a closer look to them. The paper of these "gold-foil" stamps is rather thin.Further more the embossing of the front-side shows clearly on the back as well. So I guess,Michel is correct, that the stamps are simply issued without gum. By the way,Scott mentions nothing at all about that. I would not try to remove the suspected "backing paper",because I think I would destroy the stamp by that. Not meant for postal use: they were meant for selling to collectors only and had no other purpose.(I think) The remaining values of this set:
Five of these stamps exist with different initials, close to the king´s bust.

The next missing set was issued on Jan.10th,1967. Ten different stamps from earliar issues were overprinted with a heliocopter and the words AIR MAIL in a line or in an arc, side by side.So the set contains 20 stamps. (Michel 110-129)
Missing the set annoys me,because I found it and a few more other missing sets in a pricelist of a dealer in California. Around full catalogue-price was asked, but that is O.K. for these. However they did not want to send to a foreign destination,as this meant to many troubles for them.
No wonder that such dealers are on the list of species close to become extincted !
Flowers of Bhutan Issued Feb.9th,1957. (Mi.130-8) This set is frequently found c.t.o.(shown)

Three more overprinted stamps, issued 1967.(No exact date given by Michel) Mi.139-41 Missing is the 5 Ch on 1 Nu (World Refugee Year),what as one might expect,is the most valuable stamp of the "set". As the early overprints are rarely offered in complete sets,it makes sence to look for them one by one.

On Oct.30th,1967,Bhutan issued the first plastic-coated stamps with a 3-D effect. Mi.nos.167-78
I don´t know, wether they were the first worldwide, but a number of similar sets followed from here. Michel notes that the stamps were produced as single-piece-works. That means pairs or units cannot exist. The stamps are gummed and the paper is very thick. They are so thick, that normal mounts would not hold them. I have placed them in vario-pages.But even there they move all the time, when turning the pages.
Michel further notes, that a part of this issue was perforated 9.5 in a trial. Prices for these are ten-fold,what would mean € 300.- cat.value for the perforated version.

Here is the Thimpu Post Office. The philatelic department, which is the right side of the building, is a better place to stock up for our hobby than any of the souvenir shops with signs advertising "RARE STAMPS".
