The Allies used the town of Moudros (Mudros) as a Base during the First World War (Dardanelles Campaign) and was also the site of the Armistice of Mudros in October 1918 to end the War between the Ottomans and the Allied Forces. Moudros is a harbour town on the Island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea.

Delandre also commisioned a series of poster stamps showing various battleships of the British Royal Navy. There appears to be two different series ,one in a greenish-blue colour and the other with more colourful details. Some of the ships appear in both versions.A highly interesting and very attractive series of cinderellas.

Fabulous acquisition, Michael ( Londonbus1 ), congratulations!! Would sit well in any number of places.... that's the beauty and impact of the thing! Flags, France, WWI 100th Anniversary, and others, I feel sure. Anyway, just a wonderful find; I couldn't be happier for you! My beautiful Flag Poster stamp arrived today with a nice batch of Delandre labels which I will endeavor to scan this weekend. But the Flag Poster Stamp is not a Delandre item so more editing to do !! It is 'copyrighted Bazaud' in 1919 long after Mr.Fontanille was laid up in prison !! More research !!

The military Battalion number on the face of the stamp prompts me to ask the question. I think I read in one post here on TSF that the numbers are indicative of Delandre's work.

oldpapercollectI tend to agree with Londonbus .I don,t think it is a Delandre.I havent seen any issues with Bataillon mentioned. They are usually in groups eg innfantry, chasseurs. This is scan of infantry regiment 128.

This one comes under the Red Cross section of Delandre vignettes. Delandre catalogue producer Walter Schmidt used this label in advertising his books. (see Stamp Dealer Advertising). Yesterday I saw this Poster Stamp for sale and there was a bidding war going on !! It was up to £30 I believe before I forgot about it. Now I cannot find it. The seller listed it as a Spanish Delandre Stamp !!!!

A Red Cross label for Wallis Island in the Pacific. One of many Red Cross labels/Poster Stamps by Delandre which eventually led to his downfall.

The story that Delandre, Gaston Fontanille, died in prison in 1923 is oft repeated and, indeed, this stands in Wikipedia. When I repeated this version on another forum, I was admonished by one of the catalogue editors for being incorrect. In my defense, the first 5 volumes of the catalogues also state that this was case, that is, he died in 1923! In fact Fontanille committed suicide in 1927 after he was about to be arrested for perpetrating yet another fraud. After much searching, I found a French newspaper that reported his suicide: www.retronews.fr/journal/le-petit-parisien/17-juin-1927/2/51388/1 There is even a picture of him, you can zoom in on the article headed L'ESCROC FONTANILLE The headline reads (excuse my translation): The Crook Fontanille searched for in vain for two years It Was Suicide... Incognito Having gone on the run over a previous scam (involving silver foxes), he moved to Marseille in 1925 under yet another assumed name, Baron Edmond Picarat. There he began another scam involving setting up a charity for leprosy. On the verge of being arrested he committed suicide by taking poison on 10th March 1927. This final identity was, perhaps, his greatest success despite his failure and despite his suicide! He was buried as Picarat and in L'Echo d'Alger for 11th March 1927 (in contrast to the headline in Le Petit Parisien) the headline ran: A Knight of Industry. The connection to Fontanille was not made for several months when his body was exhumed and re-buried under his real name. Gaston Fontanille was a conman well before he produced his stamps under the name Delandre which was just one of many names that he used in his lifetime. He was never a successful conman, in 1923 it was reported that he had been arrested 15 times! The stamps, of course, also another scam, represent his lasting legacy.

Here is an interesting item that I picked up recently. It is an envelope, quite small, about 2" by 3", with a stamp promoting French Red Cross stamps. I assume it contained further Delandres originally but it came with this leaflet advertising an album with 400 stamps! For those interested, there is a new book just published that describes how Delandre produced the Bonne Annee 1920 stamps. The book has a chapter that provides a detailed timeline on the major events in Delandre's life. More details here.

To be honest, I hadn't even heard of these Cinderellas but was fascinated to learn that they are from Delandre, Gaston Fontanille, after 1917 when it was generally thought that he had stopped producing stamps. Having exchanged messages with cindycan2, I appreciate that he has done much research into Fontanille. I have purchased the book and look forward, in particular, to reading Fontanille's timeline since there is much to learn and corrections to be made. Also, heard this week the sad news that Walter Schmidt, the original author of the Delandre catalogues, died on 27th August 2020, aged 90, as reported in the October edition of The Cinderella Philatelist.

Londonbus1 has mentioned the Walter Schmidt/Cinderella Publications address labels that have appeared on envelopes from the US. I have a few of these yet cannot recall ordering from him. On closer inspection, they appear on envelopes from Joe Ward Jr selling Delandres suggesting that there must have been a business relationship between them. Indeed, in the latest Cinderella Philatelist, mentioned above there is an article about the various address labels that have appeared. These are my most recent purchases from Mr Ward and they include relatively rare items. Top row, French Cruiser Battleship, Bruix. Unlisted and part perforated. Second row, French Cruiser Battleship, Gloire. Proof. Third row, Batttleship Condorcet. Missing colours, proof and regular version. Scan_20201020 by Daniel, on Flickr

I received my copy of Delandre and the Bonne Année 1920 Stamps by R G Lafrenière, cindycan2 , last week. I have to say that it is an outstanding book produced to a high standard and with colour illustrations throughout. Ron has done some excellent research here and come up with this important revelation that Delandre continued to produce stamps after he was arrested and imprisoned in 1917 for his Red Cross stamps fraud. Clearly linking Delandre to the Bonne Année stamps and a range of porte-timbre stamps. The book is well referenced throughout. In addition there is an excellent 'timeline' on the life of Delandre, Gaston Fontanille, which goes way beyond any biography that I have seen. Highly recommended. These Bonne Année and porte-timbre stamps seem to be relatively difficult to find. I have purchased 2 porte-timbres (currently awaited) and 1 Bonne Année stamp, shown here: Scan_20201207 by Daniel, on Flickr

Glad to hear the book arrived safely. I estimated that only a few thousand copies of each of the different Bonne Annee stamps would have likely been printed in 1919. It explains why they are so scarce today. Not a collectable for the faint of heart! But definitely a good challenge.

Today my 2 Delandre porte-timbres turned up. For those not familiar with the term, to quote from the book, 'they are large stamps with a blank space used to attach a postage stamp. 'Porte-timbre' literally means to ''hold a stamp'' as you will see below, with one example without a postage stamp and one with. Catalogue numbers PT12 and PT26: a Scan_20201208 by Daniel, on Flickr

Looking through cindycan2 's book Delandre and the Bonne Année (Happy New Year) 1920 Stamps, I particularly liked the British stamps and especially the Monmouthshire Welsh Dragons. Soon thereafter, a pair appeared on ebay and I made a successful bid on them. Here they are, using the catalogue numbers, they appear to be 58a blue and red and 58f (blackish) brown and rose: Scan_20201219 by Daniel, on Flickr

Two more Delandre Bonne Année stamps. The first is for Levallois- Perret in France, catalogue no. 102b green, with two snakes entwined around a torch in circle at the centre. With the wording Pax and Labor, left and right. This particular stamp was fully described as a Delandre by the seller. The second, found in a small lot of Swedish Cinderellas in my collection is Sweden 134c Stockholm (church in the background), pale grey-green and red. Scan_20201222 by Daniel, on Flickr
