What I collect: I collect world wide up to 1965 with several specialty albums added due to volume of material I have acquired. At this point I am focused on Canada and British America. I am always on the lookout for stamps and covers with postmarks from communities in Queens County, Nova Scotia. I do list various goods including stamps occasionally on eBay as hdm50

For the vast majority of collectors like myself the main catalogue players carry all the information we want and need. We are more than content to look for watermarks, perfs and maybe colour variations. The price lists are interesting but are mostly there to make us feel good when we find something of a high catalogue value at a low price. I do use cv for determining a reference point when bidding on line. Generally I bid between 20 to 50% of cv. As mentioned before I am using older catalogues mainly because I rarely collect anything newer than 1965. I have gone up to around 1990 for Canada because I was buying so much wholesale mint that keeping one of most everything issued was rather easy and no real cost to me. I have never gotten interested in the florescent tagging although I have some that found me in job lots. My USA goes up to around 1980. When I have wanted more detailed information I have found articles or specialty publications that are helpful. I totally get why the generic/general catalogues do not venture into the more specialized fields. The economics of even thicker volumes are just not there. The days of paper catalogues are probably limited and it will be interesting to see who survives in the online catalogue world.

I would estimate that 99% of a postage stamp comprises of the paper it has been printed on, you mention watermarks, shade variations and perforation information being adequately supplied by catalogues, but the study of what constitutes 99% of a stamp has in the past been sadly overlooked on these British multiple crown Wilding issues.

However, I don't think Stanley Gibbons are deliberately withholding information. These paper varients are deemed by the catalogue editor to be outside the scope for the catalogue and is detailed as such in the catalogue.

Your research into long wave came (I believe) after the publication of this catalogue in February 2019. Unless there is a change of view by the catalogue editor your best option would be to get this updated in the next version to include your long wave discoveries.

I think you found the point. You are at the level of doing a "Study" your an advanced or real advanced collector. You are using a UV light. You are not the target audience. Your in a small group of collector that if they tried to include your stuff would kill the sale to other collectors that has a price limit on what they will pay for a catalog.

Is there a study group for that stamp? Is there a study group that that stamp would fall under? If not is there 10 other people interested in that stamp to the same level as you? If so start a study group. If not is there enough info for a book? If it is not enough for a book it sounds like you need to write a paper on it and publish it in anyone of the press outlets heck this forum has a real nice news letter for the APS chapter. That will make you peer reviewed and then SG might read it and add it for other collectors and it fits into the editorial choice.

It is quite obvious from this next attachment that the paper has been contaminated

Yet, Stanley Gibbons have never made any comments of their existence in the catalogue supplements.

Just for the record Michael, you do not use a short wave ultraviolet lamp to identify fluorescence on postage stamps, I suggest Stanley Gibbons rectifies their statement in the specialised catalogue that you have depicted and changes it to long wave !

I know Russian collectors use MICHEL. I believe Ukrainian collectors do also. I know for the first few years of Ukrainian independence their post office used MICHEL numbers on their web site. But they then switched to a numbering system they created that's a clone of MICHEL, but doesn't line up with it exactly.

Most of the Commonwealth world used SG. I know Australia uses it. I know Ireland has the Hibernian catalog (which is printed by a German), but Irish stamps I see listed for sale use SG numbers.

Unitrade for Canada but Walsh/Unitrade for Newfoundland
Scott for some other Countries except GB
Maury for France
SG for UK
Michel for those not listed anywhere
AFA at times for Denmark
I have many other catalogues like Yvert & Tellier etc
My France classics have both Scott and Maury #s

Russian collectors also have two very good specialized Russian-language catalogues - Zagorskiy and Soloviev, as well as an excellent 1857-1940 catalogue by Zverev. Michel's Specialized Russia Catalogue does pick up most of the information in these catalogues, but not everything

New plate flaws have been introduced in the Michel catalog (35 PF I, II and III)

I bought 2 sheets (one for a friend who collects these varieties)

I was surprised to find only one (field 79) of the 6 possible ones.

I'm more upset than you, but because they rushed to introduce these varieties in the catalog.

I usually don't dive very deep into varieties, as I have a rather extensive collecting area and cannot concentrate resources on a finer specialization level, and instead am more of a "completist". The catalogs I use are those I have accumulated along the vagaries of my collecting life:

I started out with Darnell catalogs for Canada (in the 1980s).
I then inherited a worldwide Yvert catalog from 1938 as part of my grandfather's collection. I still use it.
My father-in-law gave me the 2000 USPS catalog (that uses Scott numbering) as a Christmas gift.
When I lived in Germany, I bought a Michel Western-Europe catalog because I wanted a catalog that covered modern French issues (2004 edition).
Once I moved to France, I then acquired, as part of package deal with a subscription, a set of AFA catalogs for Western and Eastern Europe (also 2004 edition).
I then splurged for the Yvert&Tellier catalogs for Monaco and the French Territories, plus French Colonies and Africa, and the world-wide "semi-classics 1941-1960" (2010 to 2017 printings).
In a recent trip to the US, I got a Scott catalog for the US and Canada (2013 edition).
And when I bought my house, the previous owner let me keep the 1996 Cérès France catalog they had in a drawer.

With this I cover pretty much all my main collecting interests. Since I mark my catalogs with my holdings (so they can serve as wish lists too), a new catalog usually means months (literally) of work going through the whole collection and checking all and every stamps. So I do not acquire new ones too often. And, being a completist, if a variety appears in a new catalog that I didn't know about it before, then it de facto is added to the implied wish list, and I have mixed feelings about that... This also means that I do not use the same cataloguing scheme for every country, and for several of them, I use multiple ones!

Good morning hrdoktorx (a bit of a tongue twister),
I like your idea of personalising your catalogues by marking off the ones in your collection, useful to take with you when visiting a stamp fair !
It reminds me of when I used to go trainspotting in the 1950s, I did the same thing with an Ian Allan locomotive book by marking off the numbers with what I had seen.
But as you say a lot of extra work when you buy a new catalogue.

Yes. Facit, for example. But I typically only hear the term major/minor catalog numbers used among Scott catalog users.

Catalogs such as Facit, will have a main listing, and then tack on suffixes for minor shade/paper/tagging/plate... varieties. Michel also does that in certain cases.

The difference between those catalogs and Scott -- Scott rather arbitrarily assigns the minor catalog number suffix. For example, Scott ####a, the "a" can be anything from color, paper, tagging, perforation... variety.

With catalogs such as Michel, Facit... some of the suffixes have designated meanings regarding type of variety. Sort of like what Scott does with prefixes.

The above is intended to be a generalized comment regarding catalog number methodology of Scott, Michel, Facit. Read their intros for specifics.

Gibbons, Yvert and Michel (to a degree) all do

Michel however does come with a caveat. More often than not where Scott, Gibbons or Yvert will assign a minor number. Michel will assign two or more equally major suffixed numbers.

So where Scott has 9 and 9a, Michel has 9a and 9b and no single unsuffixed 9.

Edit khj re Facit my understanding from Facit's Classic Norden catalogue is that the single unsffixed number represents the "most common variant" and that each of the suffixed versions are for the specific variant. Michel does this in its Spezial catalogues, as does the NVPH catalogue for the Netherlands.

The APS has published several articles recently in the AP and the APRL newsletter on catalogs for different countries. The problem is they are hard to find as a group.

I am a self-confessed stamp catalogue collector - I LOVE specialized catalogues because of the wealth of additional information they contain. If you know what to look for you can find hidden higher-value variants lurking in dealer stocks or online that dealers do not realize they have because they only use the basic Michel/Gibbons/Scott/Yvert.

(I am actively filling in my Gibbons hardcopy collection because Gibbons' current financial health makes one wonder how much longer it will be around, especially with the Magenta Albatross around its neck now. Only a couple more volumes I am looking for : Central Asia and Japan & Korea, both of which were last produced in like 2007-2008 so hard to find, at least not had luck so far.)

Last year I had to move my library from its former 5-level bookshelf to a new set of three three-level bookshelves as I had finally run out of room.

As a collector of Switzerland, I won't use any other, as it's German/French bilingual, and I can understand very well the later and guess the meaning of the former. So, the information is invaluable to me.

actually I do have Zumstein 2021, another one I forgot to add to the list. But it is in picture - far right bookshelf middle row 4th from left With green and white cover.

Would like to get the Zumstein speciaized 2 volume at some point, waiting to see if there will be new edition since last edition came out in 2000!

Indeed, that's exactly how I proceed. I always bring one (or several) of my marked catalogs to stamp fairs and stamp dealers. I now have too many stamps to simply remember what I have and don't have.

From my findings I've noticed that the Stanley Gibbons specialised catalogue part 4 for decimal Machins, lists a whole range of paper coatings such as OCP, FCP, PPP, PCPl & 2, ACP, etc., Yet fails to recognise the different base papers that have been coated, which should not be ignored as is the case at the moment, the same principle also applies to the fluorescent, translucent creams and contaminated papers found with some of the multiple crown Wilding series stamps in the part 3 specialised.

Scott does not, in fact Scott is very basic in its coverage.

Michel produces a Great Britain specialized catalogue which parses out Machine quite extensively the way Gibbons Decimals 2 does, but not sure if paper fluorescence is covered - I think more focus is on the many varieties of tagging bars used over the decades as far as UV elements are concerned.
